Velocity-compensated intravoxel incoherent motion of the human calf muscle
CONCLUSION: Velocity-compensated diffusion gradients significantly suppress the IVIM effect in the calf muscle, indicating that the ballistic limit is mostly reached, which is supported by the time dependence of the pseudo-diffusion coefficient.PMID:38688865 | DOI:10.1002/mrm.30059 (Source: Magnetic Resonance in Medicine)

Predictors of long-term mortality in older patients with hip fractures managed by hemiarthroplasty: a 10-year study based on a population registry in Saxony, Germany
CONCLUSIONS: In the present study based on data from the population registry from Saxony, Germany the 10-year mortality of older patients above 60 years of age managed with hemiarthroplasty for femoral neck fracture was 80%. Independent risk factors for increased long-term mortality were higher patient age, male gender, severe comorbidity, a history of cancer and in particular dementia. Perioperative factors did not affect long-term mortality.PMID:38689330 | PMC:PMC11061946 | DOI:10.1186/s13037-024-00398-9 (Source: Patient Safety in Surgery)

Content analysis of Reddit posts about coadministration of selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors and psilocybin mushrooms
ConclusionsPsilocybin ’s interactions with SSRIs are likely complex and may depend on multiple factors. Prospective studies are needed to evaluate whether psilocybin treatments are reliably safe and effective in the setting of SSRI use. (Source: Psychopharmacology)

Understanding the Causal Relationships Between Opioid Dependence and Risk of Mental Disorders: A Comprehensive Two-Sample Mendelian Randomization Study
In this study, we aim to investigate the causal associations and possible mediating mechanisms between opioid dependence and mental disorders via Mendelian randomization. Comprehensive bidirectional Mendelian randomization (MR) studies were conducted between opioid dependence and major mental disorders, including schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, major depressive disorder, panic disorder, anorexia, obsessive –compulsive disorder, post-traumatic stress disorder, and insomnia. Inverse variance weighted approach was adopted as the primary analytic method with series of sensitivity analyses. Mediation effects of chronic pain ...

31. The Effect of Family History and Polygenic Risk Scores for Psychiatric Disorders on Lithium Response
Bipolar disorder (BD) is a heritable mental illness with complex genetic architecture. Polygenic risk scores (PRS) can complement family history (FH) in predicting treatment response. We aimed to investigate the association of FH and PRS for psychiatric disorders with lithium response in BD. (Source: Biological Psychiatry)

8. The Relationship Between Treatment, Symptom Severity, and Brain Connectivity in Bipolar Disorder: An International Study Across 16 Enigma-Bipolar Sites
The treatment of bipolar disorder (BD) often involves administering multiple psychotropic medications, yet little research has examined how these medications, especially when used together, affect the brain's white matter in BD. We investigate how polypharmacy and the severity of symptoms are associated with white matter connectivity in BD, in the largest neuroimaging study of its kind. (Source: Biological Psychiatry)

7. Continuous Theta Burst Stimulation of Ventrolateral Prefrontal Cortex and Associated Reductions in Hypomanic Symptoms
Bipolar disorder is characterized by hypo/manic episodes, resulting in interfering impulsivity, reward sensitivity, and/or sensation-seeking. Elevated left ventrolateral prefrontal (vlPFC) activity during reward-expectancy shows associations with hypo/mania risk. We aimed to test whether one of three continuous theta-burst stimulation (cTBS) conditions would inhibit vlPFC and lead to hypomanic symptom reduction measured by the activation subscale of the internal state scale (ACT-ISS). DNA Methylation Biosignature of Suicide Death in the Brains of Individuals With Bipolar Disorder
Suicide death rates are elevated in individuals with bipolar disorder (BD), with past work implicating epigenetic contributions. We aimed to identify brain genome-wide DNA methylation (DNAm) changes associated with suicide death in BD. (Source: Biological Psychiatry)
