Analysis of the relationship between replication of the Hokkaido genotype of Puumala orthohantavirus and autophagy
In this study, we examined the role of autophagy in PUUV-Hok replication. PUUV-Hok infection induced the expression of LC3-II, an autophagosome marker, and the nucleocapsid protein (NP) of PUUV-Hok was colocalized with punctate structures of LC3. Inhibition of autophagy using an siRNA for Atg5, an autophagy-related gene, increased the replication of PUUV-Hok, whereas an autophagy inducer decreased its replication. Inhibition of lysosomal degradation increased the expression of NP and LC3-II. In summary, autophagy was induced by PUUV-Hok infection, which inhibited PUUV-Hok replication in a manner related to the degradation ...

Evaluation of Serum Ferritin, Procalcitonin, and C-Reactive Protein for the Prediction of Severity and Mortality in Hemorrhagic Fever With Renal Syndrome
This study aimed to analyze the clinical significance of serum ferritin, procalcitonin (PCT), and C-reactive protein (CRP) in patients with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS). The demographical, clinical, and laboratory data of 373 patients with HFRS in northeastern China were retrospectively analyzed. The levels of serum ferritin and PCT in severe patients (n = 108) were significantly higher than those in mild patients (n = 265, p < 0.001) and associated with HFRS severity. The area under the receiver operating characteristic curve (AUC) values of serum ferritin and PCT for predicting the severity of HFRS wer...

Environmentally relevant exposure to TBBPA and its analogues may not drastically affect human early cardiac development
In this study, we employed human embryonic stem cell differentiation models to assess the potential developmental toxicity of six TBBPA-like compounds, at human relevant nanomolar concentrations. To mimic early embryonic development, we utilized embryoid body-based 3D differentiation in presence of the six HFRs. Transcriptomics data showed that HFR exposure over 16 days of differentiation only interfered with the expression of a few genes, indicating those six HFRs may not have specific tissue/organ targets during embryonic development. Nevertheless, further analyses revealed that some cardiac-related genes were dysregulat...

Serum superoxide dismutase level is a potential biomarker of disease prognosis in patients with hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome caused by the Hantaan virus
Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is a disease with increased systemic inflammation and a high fatality rate. Oxidative stress is crucial for inflammation in the pathogeneses of various diseases. We... (Source: BMC Infectious Diseases)

A fatal case of haemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Kursk Region, Russia, caused by a novel Puumala virus clade
In this study, we report virological assessment of a fatal case of HFRS-PUUV (Puumala virus) in the Kursk Region. The infection caused severe multiorgan failure and the maximum viral load was detected in the tissue of the spleen. Viral sequences were obtained from the patient's autopsy material and lung tissues of bank voles captured in the region. These sequences formed a new clade in the PUUV phylogenetic tree, an outgroup to all known Russian (RUS) lineage sequences. On the other hand viruses collected in the Kursk Region grouped with the RUS lineage and are separated from all other PUUV linages. We propose to nominate ...

Comparison of the predictive ability of clinical frailty scale and hospital frailty risk score to determine long-term survival in critically ill patients: a multicentre retrospective cohort study
The Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS) is the most commonly used frailty measure in intensive care unit (ICU) patients. The hospital frailty risk score (HFRS) was recently proposed for the quantification of frailty.... (Source: Critical Care)

Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHantavirus; Hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome (HFRS) is an emerging zoonotic disease in Euro-Asia which is clinically indistinguishable from leptospirosis. A total number of 1032 patients were included in the analysis from March 2013 to March 2021 with the clinical suspicion of HFRS-like illness. Of them, 168 patients were positive for hantavirus IgM antibodies. Thirty-one patients out of 35 patients had given a four-fold rise IgG antibody titre with paired serum confirming the acute hantavirus infections. Detected antibodies...
