Brain age of rhesus macaques over the lifespan
In this study, we present the methodology of constructing a rhesus macaque brain age model using a machine learning algorithm and discuss the key predictive brain regions in comparison to the human brain, to shed light on cross-species primate similarities and differences. Structural information of the brain (e.g., parcellated volumes) from brain magnetic resonance imaging of 43 rhesus macaques were used to develop brain atlas-based features to build a brain age model that predicts biological age. The best-performing model used 22 selected features and achieved an R2 of 0.72. We also identified interpretable predictive bra...

Management and confusion in an elderly trauma patient
As the UK population continues to age, healthcare providers encounter a growing number of geriatric patients in most medical and surgical specialties. In the realm of orthopaedic care, this demographic  shift presents distinctive challenges, with delirium emerging as a prominent complicating factor of many orthopaedic admissions. Acute confusion or delirium frequently complicates the treatment of older trauma patients, significantly influencing hospital stays, requiring tailored interventions, an d negatively impacting overall recovery. Clinical impact of an individualised clinical pharmacy programme into the memory care pathway of older people: an observational study
ConclusionThe integration of clinical pharmacist secured the Memory care pathway of older patients with a cognitive complaint by identifying an important number of DRPs and PIMs with potential cognitive iatrogenic risk. (Source: International Journal of Clinical Pharmacy)

Role of NT-proBNP and lung ultrasound in diagnosing and classifying heart failure in a hospitalized oldest-old population: a cross-sectional study
Diagnosing and classifying heart failure (HF) in the oldest-old patients has technical and interpretation issues, especially in the acute setting. We assessed the usefulness of both N-terminal pro-brain natriu... (Source: BMC Geriatrics)

Allostatic load and frailty do not covary significantly among older residents of Greater Poland
Physiological dysregulation/allostatic load and the geriatric syndrome frailty increase with age. As a neurophysiological response system, allostasis supports survival by limiting stressor-related damage. Frai... (Source: Journal of Physiological Anthropology)

Risk of sleep problems in middle-aged and older adults experiencing bodily pains: Serial multiple mediation estimates of emotion distress and activity limitations
Sleep is essential for cognitive and physiological adjustment and well-being across the lifespan. However, the quantity and quality of sleep reduce significantly with increasing age, chiefly due, in part, to circadian rhythm fatigue [1,2]. Indeed, less than one-half of older adults meet the clinical recommendations for 7-9 hours of sleep [3]. Those in middle ages and older cohorts, particularly in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), experience worse sleep problems (SP) due to environmental and age-related changes in melatonin secretion, sleep-wake homeostasis, and circadian rhythm [4]. Association of regular opioid use with incident dementia and neuroimaging markers of brain health in chronic pain patients: analysis of UK Biobank
Opioid analgesics have proven essential for relieving acute pain, cancer-related pain, and in palliative care inverventions.1 Over the past two decades, there has been a significant increase in the prescription of opioids for various chronic non-cancer pain (CNCP) conditions.2,3 This has become worrisome, especially given the limited evidence regarding the efficacy of opioids over non-opioid analgesics for CNCP4 and the potential cognitive detriments associated with their use. Probiotics Supplements Improve the Sarcopenia-Related Quality of Life in Older Adults with Age-Related Muscle Decline
AbstractA pathological increase in intestinal leak is implicated in age-associated muscle loss, termed sarcopenia, and reduced sarcopenia-related quality-of-life (SarQoL). However, the potential therapies remain elusive. We investigated the effects of probiotic supplementation on sarcopenia and SarQoL in geriatric older adults. We randomized sarcopenic men into placebo (age  = 71.4 ± 3.9 years,n = 63) and probiotic (age = 73 ± 4.1 years,n = 60) groups for 16 weeks. The probiotic used was one capsule daily of Vivomix 112 billion for 16 weeks. We measured sarcopenia parameters of handgrip strength (HGS) and s...

The effects of simultaneous aerobic exercise and video game training on executive functions and brain connectivity in older adults
Executive functions (EFs) encompass a set of higher-level cognitive control abilities, including inhibition, cognitive flexibility, and working memory.1 These functions are crucial for facilitating action control and adaptive responses to dynamic environmental changes.2 Consensus suggests that executive functions (EFs) decline noticeably with age, often associated with dysfunctions in the prefrontal cortex (PFC) regions and their associated networks, including the bilateral frontoparietal networks (FPN).
