Fragility Fractures: Preoperative assessment and optimisation
Z Gerontol Geriatr. 2024 Apr 26. doi: 10.1007/s00391-024-02299-z. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFragility fractures are associated with high morbidity and mortality. An interdisciplinary collaboration and an individualized, patient-centered approach are essential to ensure an optimized preoperative period and to improve perioperative safety. Preoperative responsibilities of trauma surgery include in the first step the identification of fragility fractures and the necessity for geriatric involvement. Orthogeriatric co-management (OCM) focuses on the identification of the medical, functional and social needs of the patient. ...

Agents of Change: Geriatrics Workforce Programs Addressing Systemic Racism and Health Equity
Gerontologist. 2024 Apr 26:gnae038. doi: 10.1093/geront/gnae038. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTMany factors impact how individuals and populations age, including race, ethnicity and diversity, which can contribute to increased disease risk, less access to quality health care, and increased morbidity and mortality. Systemic racism - set of institutional policies and practices within a society or organization that perpetuate racial inequalities and discrimination - contributes to health inequities of vulnerable populations, particularly older adults. The National Association of Geriatrics Educators (NAGE) recognizes the need...

Reframing Fall Prevention and Risk Management as a Chronic Condition through the Lens of the Expanded Chronic Care Model: Will Integrating Clinical Care and Public Health Improve Outcomes?
Gerontologist. 2024 Apr 26:gnae035. doi: 10.1093/geront/gnae035. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFalls are a leading cause of morbidity and mortality among adults aged 65 years and older (older adults) and are increasingly recognized as a chronic condition. Yet, fall-related care is infrequently provided in a chronic care context despite fall-related death rates increasing 41% between 2012 and 2021. One of the many challenges to addressing falls is the absence of fall-focused chronic disease management programs, which improve outcomes of other chronic conditions, like diabetes. Policies, information systems, and clinical-com...

Reminiscence interventions for loneliness reduction in older adults: a systematic review
CONCLUSION: While reminiscence interventions hold some promise for reducing loneliness levels among older adults, future methodologically rigorous research is required, and standardised protocols need to be developed for application, with the specific aim of reducing levels of loneliness among older adults.PMID:38669147 | DOI:10.1080/13607863.2024.2345809 (Source: Aging and Mental Health)

How can care home activities facilitate social connection in residents? A qualitative study
CONCLUSION: We identified the key aspects of activities which facilitate social connection in care homes. These findings can be applied to a range of existing and newly designed activities in care homes and inform the development and testing of psychosocial interventions aiming to improve social connection.PMID:38669150 | DOI:10.1080/13607863.2024.2345130 (Source: Aging and Mental Health)

'Too young to sit at home': a qualitative study conducted among employees with young-onset dementia and their relatives
CONCLUSION: The findings highlight a strong desire to work post-YOD diagnosis, serving as a foundation for developing workplace support tools and guidance. This has the potential to help individuals with YOD preserve their self-confidence and identity while working within their capabilities.PMID:38669151 | DOI:10.1080/13607863.2024.2345132 (Source: Aging and Mental Health)

How PBPK Can Help to Understand Old Drugs and Inform their Dosing in Elderly: Amantadine Case Study
Clin Pharmacol Ther. 2024 Apr 26. doi: 10.1002/cpt.3276. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAmantadine, despite being on the market for 55 years, has several unknown aspects of its pharmacokinetics especially related to the influence of covariates such as age, disease, or interactions linked to amantadine's renal elimination. As amantadine is used in Parkinson's disease and is considered a potential candidate in COVID treatment and other diseases, there is an unmet need for thorough understanding of its pharmacokinetic in special populations, such as the elderly. We aimed to mechanistically describe amantadine pharmacokinetics ...

Relationship between serum uric acid and sarcopenia in geriatric heart failure patients with preserved ejection fraction
CONCLUSIONS: In summary, the prevalence of sarcopenia is positively related to serum UA levels among the elderly diagnosed with HFpEF. Due to the cross-sectional nature of the study design, additional investigations are necessary to validate our findings and identify the optimal range for UA reduction.PMID:38670208 | DOI:10.1016/j.exger.2024.112445 (Source: Experimental Gerontology)
