Evaluating the impact of a national geriatric mental health ECHO educational program on healthcare providers' practice
This study describes a Canada-wide National ECHO pilot project in the area of geriatric mental health and reports on the program's impact on providers' care practices. A mixed-methods approach was used to analyze surveys completed by participating healthcare providers. Program evaluation measured satisfaction, achievement of learning objectives, awareness of issues related to geriatric mental health, and comfort and self-efficacy working with older adults. The program led to a statistically significant increase in participants' awareness of issues related to support for older adults with mental illness and comfort and self...

Does losing family members in midlife matter for late-life mental and cognitive health? A longitudinal study of older Swedes spanning 30 years
CONCLUSION: Midlife bereavement might have gendered implications on LLD and cognitive impairment, but associations need to be confirmed by well-powered studies. Further research is warranted to elucidate the association between multiple midlife losses and reduced LLD risk.PMID:38644675 | DOI:10.1080/13607863.2024.2341877 (Source: Aging and Mental Health)

Prediction of walking speed one year following hip fracture based on pre-fracture assessments of mobility and physical activity
Older people with hip fracture are often medically frail, and many do not regain their walking ability and level of physical activity. The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between pre-fracture... (Source: BMC Geriatrics)

Assessing the relationship between multimorbidity, NCD configurations, frailty phenotypes, and mortality risk in older adults
Older adults are increasingly susceptible to prolonged illness, multiple chronic diseases, and disabilities, which can lead to the coexistence of multimorbidity and frailty. Multimorbidity may result in variou... (Source: BMC Geriatrics)

Predictors of Mortality after Craniotomy for Geriatric Traumatic Brain Injury
: With a sustained increase in the proportion of elderly trauma patients, geriatric traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a significant source of morbidity, mortality and resource utilization. The aim of our study was to assess the predictors of mortality in geriatric TBI patients who underwent craniotomy. (Source: Injury)

Brain age of rhesus macaques over the lifespan
In this study, we present the methodology of constructing a rhesus macaque brain age model using a machine learning algorithm and discuss the key predictive brain regions in comparison to the human brain, to shed light on cross-species primate similarities and differences. Structural information of the brain (e.g., parcellated volumes) from brain magnetic resonance imaging of 43 rhesus macaques were used to develop brain atlas-based features to build a brain age model that predicts biological age. The best-performing model used 22 selected features and achieved an R2 of 0.72. We also identified interpretable predictive bra...
