Deadly Pacific ‘blobs’ tied to emission cuts in China
Starting in late 2013, the first in a handful of record-shattering heat waves struck the north Pacific Ocean near Alaska. Temperatures in these warm “blobs,” which have occurred four times in the past decade, sometimes reach more than 2°C above normal. They have sparked coastwide blooms of toxic algae, left thousands of humpback whales missing and presumed dead, emptied the nets of Alaska cod fishers, and littered North American beaches with the corpses of starved seabirds. Research has implicated climate change, which can supercharge natural fluctuations in ocean heat. But now, scientists are pointing...

New animal dads often kill their stepchildren. These parrots adopt them instead
This study carefully teases apart” how and where it occurs, she says, and reveals that the tactic can have positive reproductive consequences. The bold decision can work out well for adopters, Beissinger adds, as the new dads—adopters and killers alike—“get both the love and the real estate.” (Source: Science of Aging Knowledge Environment)

Leaving loneliness alone: a brief research report on the pathways to (digital) solutions involving older adults
This study aims to adopt a solution-based approach to capture solutions that community-dwelling older Portuguese adults who feel loneliness already experience in their lives.Six individuals (aged 64–86 years) answered two solution-based questions: miracle and exceptions. Findings were obtained from one group discussion session that was audio-recorded, transcribed and submitted to qualitative analysis.Main findings suggest that participants feel comfort in imagining their desired scenarios that involve being with their loved ones, better health conditions, adequate housing settings and contact with nature. The findings h...

Sexual Expression in Long-Term Care Institutions: Are We Ready for the Baby Boomer Generation?
We examined sexuality-related attitudes, including in the context of dementia, among 150 LTC administrators. Participants also completed a questionnaire assessing their experiences and perceptions regarding existing and anticipated supports, barriers, and priorities. Most participants demonstrated positive sexual attitudes; however, multiple challenges to meeting residents' sexuality needs were noted, including assessing capacity to consent, limited privacy, staff training, conflicting attitudes, and a lack of adequate policy and guidelines. Challenges are broad and significant and considerable attention is required to mee...

Smart Seizure Detection System: Machine Learning Based Model in Healthcare IoT
CONCLUSION: Healthcare IoT is further utilized by the methodology, which takes a comprehensive approach using classifier ensembles and signal processing approaches resulting in real-time data to help them make better decisions. This demonstrates how well the suggested method works for smart seizure detection, which is a crucial development for better patient outcomes.PMID:38706349 | DOI:10.2174/0118746098298618240429102237 (Source: Current Aging Science)

Analysis of the relationship between age-related erythrocyte dysfunction and fatigue
This study aimed to assess the mechanism of fatigue in older people, especially focused on relation between dysfunction of erythrocyte and fatigue. Total power (TP), which is the value of autonomic nerve activity, was measured as a value of fatigue and significantly decreased in workers with aging. As properties of senescent erythrocytes, the erythrocyte sedimentation rate and damaged erythrocytes population increased with aging and correlated with TP. These results suggested that the accumulation of damaged erythrocytes contributes to fatigue. Recent studies revealed that senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP), ...
