Duration, numerosity and length processing in healthy ageing and Parkinson ’s disease
AbstractPeople constantly process temporal, numerical, and length information in everyday activities and interactions with the environment. However, it is unclear whether quantity perception changes during ageing. Previous studies have provided heterogeneous results, sometimes showing an age-related effect on a particular quantity, and other times reporting no differences between young and elderly samples. However, three dimensions were never compared within the same study. Here, we conducted two experiments with the aim of investigating the processing of duration, numerosity and length in both healthy and pathological age...

Age affects vascular morphology and predictiveness of anatomical landmarks for aortic zones in trauma patients: implications for resuscitative endovascular balloon occlusion of the aorta
ConclusionAging increases the length and diameter of aorta and iliac arteries, with a tortuous and enlarged morphology in geriatric populations. The mid-sternum and the lower one-third junction of the xiphisternum to the umbilicus were predictive landmarks for zone 1 and zone 3, respectively. Adherence to Online Interventions for Family Caregivers of People with Dementia: A Meta-analysis and Systematic Review
With the rapid increase in the proportion of people with dementia, the number of family caregivers providing unpaid care and support is also growing worldwide. Family caregivers are an essential pillars of dementia management efforts, as they reduce the economic cost of care and play an important role in supporting the quality of life in people with dementia [2]. While caregiving can provide a sense of fulfilment, the burden of caregiving can also cause significant psychological challenges [3]. (Source: The American Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry)

NIH boosts pay for postdocs and graduate students
The U.S. National Institutes of Health (NIH) announced pay increases today for early-career scientists who are recipients of its Ruth L. Kirschstein National Research Service Awards (NRSAs), after an NIH advisory group recommended raises in December 2023 . Postdocs will now be paid at least $61,008, an increase of $4500 over their current minimum salary level—though still below the advisory group’s recommendation of $70,000. Graduate students will receive a $1000 raise, bringing their minimum to $28,224. NIH also announced a $500 increase in child care subsidies for early-career researchers who are parents. ...

"The least significant change on bone mineral density scan increased in patients with higher degrees of obesity"
CONCLUSION: LSC of 0.05 g/cm² could be used in clinical practice in patients with class 2 or 3 obesity. These findings should help to improve the interpretation of BMD scans in these patients and optimize their management.TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: Comité de Protection des Personnes Ile-de France VII, France.PMID:38652346 | PMC:PMC11039528 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-024-02736-4 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Commentary on: physical activity and exercise for mild cognitive impairment and dementia: a collaborative international guideline
In conclusion, there is limited evidence on the beneficial role of physical activity and exercise in preserving cognitive functions in subjects with normal cognition, MCI or dementia. The guidelines support the promotion of physical activity based on the beneficial effects on almost all facets of health.PMID:38652380 | PMC:PMC11039492 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-024-02747-1 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Prognostic value of Geriatric-8 for adverse outcomes within 30 days of surgery in older adults with colorectal cancer: A retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: This study confirms that G8 scores have no prognostic value for adverse outcomes, complications and mortality within 30 days of surgery among older adults with CRC. Therefore, the G8 should not be the tool for short-term risk prediction of adverse outcomes in these patients.PMID:38652933 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejon.2024.102591 (Source: European Journal of Oncology Nursing)
