Combining Mini-Mental State Examination and Montreal Cognitive Assessment for assessing the clinical efficacy of cholinesterase inhibitors in mild Alzheimer's disease: a pilot study
Aging Clin Exp Res. 2024 Apr 17;36(1):95. doi: 10.1007/s40520-024-02744-4.ABSTRACTCurrent drugs for Alzheimer's Disease (AD), such as cholinesterase inhibitors (ChEIs), exert only symptomatic activity. Different psychometric tools are needed to assess cognitive and non-cognitive dimensions during pharmacological treatment. In this pilot study, we monitored 33 mild-AD patients treated with ChEIs. Specifically, we evaluated the effects of 6 months (Group 1 = 17 patients) and 9 months (Group 2 = 16 patients) of ChEIs administration on cognition with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), the Montreal Cognitive Assessment (...

Predicting the efficacy of donepezil intervention in Alzheimer's disease patients using regional homogeneity in the inferior orbitofrontal cortex
CONCLUSIONS: These findings deepen our understanding of the brain mechanisms underlying the clinical efficacy of donepezil in AD patients, and provide a novel way to predict its clinical efficacy in such patients.PMID:38630202 | PMC:PMC11024046 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-023-02691-6 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Association of serum uric acid with functional disability in older subjects: a population-based study
CONCLUSIONS: In older subjects, SUA levels are associated with disability; the cut off level above 5.5 mg/dL might be adopted in pharmacological trials aiming at reducing the incidence and progression of disability by reducing SUA, and for identifying subjects at increased risk of disability.PMID:38630352 | PMC:PMC11023951 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-024-02746-2 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

The SaVe project - Sarcopenia and Vertigo in aging patients with colorectal cancer: A study protocol for three randomized controlled trials
DISCUSSION: Trial enrollment began in April 2023 and is the first trial to evaluate reasons for dizziness, decline in walking balance, and sarcopenia in older patients receiving chemotherapy. The trial will provide new and valuable knowledge in how to assess, manage, and prevent dizziness, decline in walking balance, and sarcopenia in older patients with colorectal cancer.TRIAL REGISTRATION: The Regional Ethics Committee (j.nr. Should researchers use AI to write papers? Group aims for community-driven standards
When and how should text-generating artificial intelligence (AI) programs such as ChatGPT help write research papers? In the coming months, 4000 researchers from a variety of disciplines and countries will weigh in on guidelines that could be adopted widely across academic publishing, which has been grappling with chatbots and other AI issues for the past year and a half . The group behind the effort wants to replace the piecemeal landscape of current guidelines with a single set of standards that represents a consensus of the research community. Known as CANGARU, the initiative is a partnership between res...

Plans to expand African vaccine production face steep hurdles
In March 2022, when the pandemic was still raging, the messenger RNA (mRNA) company Moderna announced it would build a $500 million plant in Kenya to manufacture half a billion doses of its COVID-19 vaccine annually. “ This is major ,” Kenyan President William Ruto said at the time. The plant would help reduce Africa’s dependence on vaccines produced elsewhere, Ruto said—a situation that had turned disastrous during the pandemic—and bring economic benefits as well. But Moderna may never break ground on the Kenya factory. On 11 April, the company said it had “paused its efforts” becau...
