Prognostic value of Geriatric-8 for adverse outcomes within 30 days of surgery in older adults with colorectal cancer: A retrospective cohort study
CONCLUSION: This study confirms that G8 scores have no prognostic value for adverse outcomes, complications and mortality within 30 days of surgery among older adults with CRC. Therefore, the G8 should not be the tool for short-term risk prediction of adverse outcomes in these patients.PMID:38652933 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejon.2024.102591 (Source: European Journal of Oncology Nursing)

Examining pain, function, behavioral symptoms and associations with engagement in meaningful activity for residents with dementia in assisted living
CONCLUSION: Findings from this study show that pain is a significant factor that is negatively associated with residents' engagement in meaningful activity. Ongoing research is needed to help improve pain management for residents with dementia in assisted living and support their engagement in meaningful activity.PMID:38651198 | DOI:10.1080/13607863.2024.2342963 (Source: Aging and Mental Health)

"The least significant change on bone mineral density scan increased in patients with higher degrees of obesity"
CONCLUSION: LSC of 0.05 g/cm² could be used in clinical practice in patients with class 2 or 3 obesity. These findings should help to improve the interpretation of BMD scans in these patients and optimize their management.TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: Comité de Protection des Personnes Ile-de France VII, France.PMID:38652346 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-024-02736-4 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Commentary on: physical activity and exercise for mild cognitive impairment and dementia: a collaborative international guideline
In conclusion, there is limited evidence on the beneficial role of physical activity and exercise in preserving cognitive functions in subjects with normal cognition, MCI or dementia. The guidelines support the promotion of physical activity based on the beneficial effects on almost all facets of health.PMID:38652380 | DOI:10.1007/s40520-024-02747-1 (Source: Aging Clinical and Experimental Research)

Trends in severe functional limitations among working and non-working adults in Germany: Towards an (un)-healthy working life?
We examined trends in severe functional limitations among working and non-working adults in Germany (ages 40 –65). Four population-based samples of 11,615 participants were used, spanning the time periods 2002–2021. The overall prevalence of severe limitations was found to be 12.8% in the sample, but also varied from 10 to 20% according to occupational group. Over time, severe limitations were found to have increased, from 10.6% in 2002 to 13.2% in 2021. Logistic regression analysis showed that severe limitations increased significantly in certain subgroups, including working women with a low skilled white collar occup...

Diabetic Foot Ulcers in Geriatric Patients
Care for the patient with diabetic foot ulcers (DFUs) entails understanding the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and a systematic approach to diagnosis and treatment. The authors will review elements of DFU in geriatric patients including the pathophysiology of diabetes, epidemiology and management of DFU in the context of developing a Plan for Healing. The authors will discuss comprehensive principles of a Plan for Healing, which applies to all aspects of chronic wounds. (Source: Clinics in Geriatric Medicine)

The Impact of Delirium on Recovery in Geriatric Rehabilitation After Acute Infection
Delirium is common during acute infection in older patients and is associated with functional decline. Geriatric rehabilitation (GR) can help older patients to return to their premorbid functional level. It is unknown whether delirium affects GR outcomes in patients with acute infection. We evaluated whether delirium affects trajectories of activities of daily living (ADL) and quality of life (QoL) recovery in GR after COVID-19 infection. Rosacea in Older Adults and Pharmacologic Treatments
AbstractRosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition that is often more severe in older patients. The main clinical features are erythema, telangiectasia, and inflammatory lesions of the face. The pathogenesis of this condition is not fully understood but certainly multifaceted. Immune and inflammatory dysregulation, genetics, neurogenic dysregulation, microbiome dysbiosis, and systemic disease have all been implicated in rosacea pathogenesis. As we better understand the various pathways that lead to rosacea, we acknowledge that the different symptoms may have unique underlying triggers and mechanisms. Aging also impac...
