Interventions Based on Behavior Change Techniques to Encourage Physical Activity or Decrease Sedentary Behavior in Community-Dwelling Adults Aged 50-70: Systematic Review With Intervention Component Analysis
J Aging Phys Act. 2024 Apr 24:1-24. doi: 10.1123/japa.2023-0140. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIncreasing physical activity (PA) and/or decreasing sedentary behaviors is important in the delay and prevention of long-term conditions. PA can help maintain function and independence and decrease the need for hospitalization/institutionalization. Activity rates often decline in later life resulting in a need for interventions that encourage uptake and adherence through the use of Behavior Change Techniques (BCTs). We conducted a systematic review of the evidence for interventions that included BCTs in community-dwelling adults ...

The association of neighborhood socioeconomic status with executive function and processing speed in cognitively normal Mexican Americans elders from the Health and Aging Brains Study - Health Disparities cohort
CONCLUSION: Our study revealed that living in an area of higher deprivation was associated with lower cognitive function in MA but not in NHW, which is important to consider in future interventions to slow cognitive decline.PMID:38663362 | DOI:10.1159/000539035 (Source: Dementia and Geriatric Cognitive Disorders)

Are Barriers to Physical Activity Associated With Changing Physical Activity Levels and Sedentary Time in Patients With Peripheral Arterial Disease? A Longitudinal Study
J Aging Phys Act. 2024 Apr 24:1-7. doi: 10.1123/japa.2023-0120. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe aims of the current study were to analyze the association between the barriers to and changes in physical activity levels and sedentary behavior, as well as to examine whether these barriers change over time in patients with peripheral artery disease. In this longitudinal study, we assessed 72 patients (68% men; 65.7 ± 9.2 years). Physical activity was measured over a 7-day period using an accelerometer, and data were collected on time spent in sedentary activities, low-light physical activities, and moderate-to-vigorous phys...

Effects of moderate intensity training and lithium on spatial learning and memory in a rat model: The role of SIRT3 and PGC1- α expression levels and brain-derived neurotropic factor
In this study we investigated the potential synergistic effects of moderate interval training (MIT) and lithium on spatial learning and memory. Forty-two male Wistar males were classified into six groups including I: Control, II: 10 mg/kg/day IP lithium (Li10), III: MIT, IV: Li10 + MIT, V: 40 mg/kg/day IP lithium (Li40), and VI: Li40 + MIT. Then, the rats underwent Morris Water Maze (MWM) test to assess their spatial memory and learning ability. Brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) density was measured by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA), and the expression of PGC1 and SIRT3 were assessed via qRT-PCR. The resu...

Dementia Care in Rural Appalachia: Multilevel Analysis of Individual and County-level Factors
DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Findings suggest that informal support in caring for the person living with dementia enables HCBS use in rural Appalachia. In contrast, limited geographic accessibility and service availability can impede HCBS use in rural regions. Policymakers are urged to allocate direct public funding to service providers to expand service availability in under-resourced rural regions.PMID:38661552 | DOI:10.1093/geront/gnae037 (Source: The Gerontologist)

Strategies to Improve Emergency Transitions from Long-Term Care Facilities: A Scoping Review
DISCUSSION AND IMPLICATIONS: Mixed or non-significant results prevent us from recommending (or discouraging) any interventions. Given the complexity of these transitions and the need to create sustainable improvement strategies, future research should describe strategies used to embed innovations in care contexts and to measure both implementation and intervention success.PMID:38661440 | DOI:10.1093/geront/gnae036 (Source: The Gerontologist)
