Blunted sudomotor reactivity in fibromyalgia is associated with levels of depression
CONCLUSIONS: The greater prevalence of sudomotor dysfunction in fibromyalgia patients is consistent with the presence of neuropathy in subgroups of patients, and with the basic heterogeneity of the disorder. However, neuropathy does not appear helpful for determining the clinical features of the disorders, or the level of central sensitisation measured by pressure algometry. Future studies including patients with fibromyalgia suffering and not suffering from depression as well as patients with depression but free from chronic pain, are required to identify the role of depression in the observed low ESC levels.PMID:38372725...

Challenges and insights in managing difficult-to-treat rheumatoid arthritis: real-world clinical perspectives
CONCLUSIONS: D2T RA requires more intensive management, and patients with D2T RA have higher disease activity, poorer functional status, and quality of life than those without D2T RA.PMID:38372714 | DOI:10.55563/clinexprheumatol/nyu9er (Source: Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology)

Celebrities influence on rheumatic diseases interest: a Google Trends analysis
AbstractCelebrity-related events have influenced public interest in diseases like cancer, but their impact on rheumatic diseases is poorly investigated. We aimed to investigate whether celebrity-related events may account for atypical interest among Google users in rheumatic diseases. We used Google Trends to generate the relative search volume of 24 adult rheumatic diseases. We visually analyzed global time trends and recorded all dates with unusual spikes of interest. Finally, we used the Google search engine to detect media news related to rheumatic disease that may explain the spikes. The majority of atypical spikes in...

Efficacy of cranial electrotherapy stimulation in patients with burning mouth syndrome: a randomized, controlled, double-blind pilot study
ConclusionAlthough CES is an easily applicable and safe therapeutic option for chronic facial pain, active stimulation was not superior to sham stimulation. Among other reasons, this could be due to the short double-blinded treatment period, duration of the daily stimulation session or the small sample size. (Source: Frontiers in Neurology)

Hierarchical clustering applied to chronic pain drawings identifies undiagnosed fibromyalgia: implications for busy clinical practice
Currently-used assessments for fibromyalgia require clinicians to suspect a fibromyalgia diagnosis, a process susceptible to unintentional bias. Automated assessments of standard patient-reported outcomes (PROs) could be used to prompt formal assessments, potentially reducing bias. We sought to determine whether hierarchical clustering of patient-reported pain distribution on digital body map drawings predicted fibromyalgia diagnosis. Using an observational cohort from the University of Pittsburgh ’s Patient Outcomes Repository for Treatment registry, which contains PROs and electronic medical record data from 21,423 pat...

The use and effectiveness of exercise for managing postural orthostatic tachycardia syndrome in young adults with joint hypermobility and related conditions: A scoping review
Postural Orthostatic Tachycardia Syndrome (POTS) is a form of dysautonomia. It may occur in isolation, but frequently co-exists in individuals with hypermobile variants of Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (EDS) and related conditions (chronic fatigue syndrome [CFS] and fibromyalgia). Exercise is recommended for non-pharmacological POTS management but needs to be individualised. This scoping review explores the current literature on use and effectiveness of exercise-based management for POTS, with specific focus on individuals with joint hypermobility and related conditions who experience hypermobility, and/or pain, and/or fatigue. Autoimmune thyroid disease and rheumatoid arthritis: where the twain meet
AbstractAutoimmune thyroid disease (AITD) is the most prevalent autoimmune disease. It shares multiple genetic, clinical, and serologic characteristics with rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Although frequently described as a classic form of single-organ autoimmunity, the AITD disease burden in a subset of patients extends well beyond the thyroid gland. This review explores the complex interaction between the two diseases and the clinical consequences when they overlap. Beyond the well-known effects of AITD on thyroid function in RA, there is mounting evidence of the association of both conditions impacting the presentation and o...

Frequency of idiopathic intracranial hypertension with ultrasound in patients with fibromyalgia: Relation with function, central sensitization, and neuropathic pain
ConclusionThis study unveils a substantial occurrence (67.5%) of IIH in FMS patients, suggesting shared pathophysiological mechanisms contributing to symptoms like fatigue, headache, and cognitive dysfunction. Additionally, these findings implicate heightened functional impairment, CS, headache, and fatigue in FMS patients with IIH. (Source: International Journal of Rheumatic Diseases)

Impact of multiple-session home-based transcranial direct current stimulation (M-HB-tDCS) on eating behavior in fibromyalgia: A factorial randomized clinical trial
Multiple-session home-based self-applied transcranial direct current stimulation (M-HB-self-applied-tDCS) has previously been found to effectively reduce chronic pain and enhance cognitive function. However, the effectiveness of this method for disordered eating behavior still needs to be studied. (Source: BRAIN STIMULATION: Basic, Translational, and Clinical Research in Neuromodulation)
