Elevated DAS28-ESR in patients with rheumatoid arthritis who have comorbid fibromyalgia is associated more with tender joint counts than with patient global assessment or swollen joint counts: implications for assessment of inflammatory activity
CONCLUSIONS: DAS28-ESR is elevated significantly in FM+ vs. FM- RA patients; pooled effect sizes were highest for TJC, followed by PATGL, SJC and ESR. The findings appear relevant to response and remission criteria, treat-to-target, and general management of RA.PMID:38525998 | DOI:10.55563/clinexprheumatol/vfvso2 (Source: Clinical and Experimental Rheumatology)

Mobile App Use among Persons with Fibromyalgia: A Cross-Sectional Survey
Persons with fibromyalgia experience a diverse set of symptoms. Recommendations for management generally focus on multidisciplinary approaches involving multiple modalities. Mobile apps can be an essential component for self-management, yet little is known about how persons with fibromyalgia use mobile apps for health-related purposes. A cross-sectional survey (N=663) was conducted to understand the real-world use of apps among persons with fibromyalgia. The survey included two main foci: 1) eHealth literacy and use of information sources, and 2) mobile app use patterns and preferences for health-related purposes, includin...

Effectiveness of transcutaneous electrical nerve stimulation improves pain intensity, disability and quality of life in patients with fibromyalgia syndrome: a systematic review with meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: This meta-analysis, including the largest number of studies, showed that TENS intervention is an effective therapy to reduce pain and disability and increase QoL in FMS patients.PMID:38511391 | DOI:10.1080/09638288.2024.2331069 (Source: Disability and Rehabilitation)

Current patient care of systematic lupus erythematosus in Rhineland-Palatinate and Saarland
DISCUSSION: Compared with guideline recommendations, the low rate of AMs in therapy was particularly striking in patients not treated by rheumatologists (35% on average compared with 81% for rheumatologists). Additionally, (sustained) high doses of GCs are not in line with literature recommendations. In the free text field, the main requests were for more rheumatologists in private practice and faster appointment scheduling, as well as better communication and networking. In addition, the desire for more training and education was frequently expressed..PMID:38509358 | DOI:10.1007/s00393-024-01491-1 (Source: Zeitschrift fur Rheumatologie)

Evaluating the fibromyalgia screening questionnaire and pain catastrophizing scale on patients undergoing prolapse surgery
Chronic pain is prevalent in older adults, affects healthcare outcomes1 and is understudied. Since age is also a risk factor for pelvic organ prolapse2, it is likely that chronic pain disorders are prevalent in this population and may impact postoperative experiences. The Fibromyalgia Survey Questionnaire (FSQ) allows for epidemiologic research on chronic pain disorders3 and has been previously used in gynecologic research as a perioperative screening tool4,5. FSQ ≥13 is diagnostic for fibromyalgia. (Source: American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynecology)

Current understanding of nociplastic pain
Korean J Pain. 2024 Mar 20. doi: 10.3344/kjp.23326. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNociplastic pain by the "International Association for the Study of Pain" is defined as pain that arises from altered nociception despite no clear evidence of nociceptive or neuropathic pain. Augmented central nervous system pain and sensory processing with altered pain modulation are suggested to be the mechanism of nociplastic pain. Clinical criteria for possible nociplastic pain affecting somatic structures include chronic regional pain and evoked pain hypersensitivity including allodynia with after-sensation. In addition to possible nocip...
