What does call look like as a private practice hem/onc attending?
Specifically, I'm curious about how frequently overnight call is usually taken, how often you get called, and what you end up having to do when called (in a standard private practice environment). Thank you! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Thought about pension/retirement benefits?
I'm graduating next year and is deciding between academic environment vs. large practice such as Kaiser. For KPNC the pay is north 450K, eligible for pension after 10-15 years services. For me this seems like a really good deal given the stable income stream on retirement. What do you think about this pension? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Wife probably going to make a C in post bacc. Don't know what to do.
I've posted several times over the last few years seeking advice for my wife. We've followed it closely, and she has been crushing it...until today. It feels like it's all crashing down, and I don't know what to do now. She finished her undergrad with 2.5 sGPA. She was in a tough living environment, had long commutes from her rural home, 3 jobs, 1st gen of a Mexican immigrant, etc. She made Ds in 4 classes: both Ochems, physiology, and Calc. Last summer she started her post bacc by... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

FlexMed application review
Hello there! For those who have applied and/or are knowledgeable of this program, I was wondering if its worth it for me to apply. This program will benefit me because I would really like to pursue an Earth Systems minor with an emphasis on environmental justice so I can take time in undergrad to explore sustainability issues in medicine and psychology research. I’m also going to be a apart of a new company to develop an app for premeds but I can’t say too much about that yet. I may do a... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Becker: Young Physicians Don't Want to Work That Hard
The misconception that young physicians 'don't want to work that hard' Bridge the communication gap between generations of physicians and administrators to create a flexible medical care environment. www.beckershospitalreview.com "For Dr. Bruce, it is important for physicians and administrators to work together to find a happy medium. Creighton (Phoenix) pros: - supportive environment / students are nice - preclinicals / clinical H/P/F cons: - less research opportunities (not my biggest priority) - newer campus = less partnerships? - far from home VCU pros: - closer to home - more established campus - preclinical is P/F cons: - clinical is H/HP/P/F I am from NJ so it would be nice to stay in the east coast, closer to home. in terms of specialty, i am not sure yet, but i do not want to close myself off... Diversity Essay Ideas
I have three ideas for the diversity secondary essay prompt, and I can't decide on which one to run with: 1. I moved from Korea when I was 11 to a Deep South state and lived in a mostly white suburban area, with almost no other Korean families. The sudden shift from a ethnically homogeneous environment to one where I was a significant minority forced me to adapt quickly (linguistically and culturally) and led to me developing an interest in helping other immigrant families, especially... How to explain and/or avoid explaining inpatient psych schedule to admin
Let's say you're employed by a non-profit hospital doing an inpatient job seeing 10 patients per day. You come in at 8 and leave between 1pm to 3:30pm most days, but available by phone or to come back if needed, but that never happens. The hospital environment is very flexible, not a rigid clinic schedule, so some people get done earlier, some later, but you're working like 6 hours a day and getting median salary. How do you explain this to hospital admin when they try to compare you to... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

LUCOM vs. ICOM urgent

Supervisors "diagnosing" their interns?
This was brought to me by a colleague and I had no idea what to offer him. The owner of the agency where he was going to intern met with him for 15-20 minutes where they talked about his experiences with another agency he was leaving because of a toxic work environment. According to him, the male owner/potential supervisor simply blurted out at one point "you're a narcissist. He asked for an explanation of the comment which was refused and instead was asked to talk about how that made him... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Prolonging undergraduate?
Hi friends, Was hoping to garner some advice on a somewhat nitpicky topic. I am looking at two roads: to cram a bit and finish my undergraduate degree in Fall of 2024, or prolong it, taking school part-time, and finish in Spring of 2025. This is assuming matriculation to medical school in Fall of 2025. My current intention is to protract the process and deliberately stay longer at my undergraduate university for the sake of: having access to the university's resources/environment, and most... I moved to New Zealand AMA
A year ago I moved with my young family to New Zealand and started working in the public health system here. Our reasons were a mix of wanting an adventure, better work life balance, and a healthier environment for our child. There have been ups and downs but in general we have loved it, and plan to stay. I’ve seen posts of people asking about overseas options, so I’d be happy to provide my perspective to anyone interested. My department also has a few vacancies so…some shameless recruiting.
