low 3.2 gpa no MCAT taken next steps
Hi! I am graduating from my mid west undergrad with most likely 3.28-3.3 in cGPA and a 2.9 in science gpa. I struggled a lot my sophmore year onwards due to mental health issues and even though I was able to show an upward trend my junior year, my senior year tanked because of COVID making my online classes much harder (part CS and those classes were very brutal in an online environment). I realize I have lots to do to make myself competitive and my goals for this summer are to take some... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Would "life science" course count toward BCPM?
BSC1005, department is biological sciences This is the course description: A survey of life on earth for non-majors. Evolution, anatomy, physiology, genetics, reproduction, and ecology are stressed. Lectures and discussions also demonstrate how biological knowledge is relevant to social, economic, environmental and philosophical problems. This is a General Education course. Initially it sounds like it obviously does, but the "social, economic, enviro..." part concerns me. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What is CTICU all about?
EM resident applying to CC programs here. Ironically torn between medicine, anesthesia, and (gasp) surgery pathways. I know the latter two can provide significantly more exposure to cardiac ICUs, but am not sure what it is like working in these units. Can anyone shed light on the environment? Seems like you'll spend a lot of time coordinating care between cardiologists, CT surgeons, and anesthesiologists and will have less "ownership" over your patients. Is that a fair assumption? Are... Why are people working so long?
I’m asking a question out of genuine curiosity because something is picking at me. I finished residency 6 years ago in a lucrative subspecialty. I was at essentially net zero when I got out and now have $3 million NW. I realize that this is largely a product of the amazing bull market we have had, but I’ve ran the numbers and even in the worst bear market environment, I would only be about 1.5 years behind. I also spend a lot of money. About 7k a month total not including mortgage (which is... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Pre-med VT vs UVA
High school senior here. I am planning to major bio on pre-med track and a possible minor in business or something (I'm not 100% sure I will even do bio and pre-med but for right now that is what I want) I am trying to decide between VT which gave me a full ride and UVA which is 2-3k more expensive. I like UVA's environment and its affiliated hospital however, know that VT will allow me to get a higher GPA. I would love anyone's opinions and advice. Thank you. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Wayne vs Toledo
I'm currently choosing between these two programs and looking for advice/someone to bounce ideas off of. I definitely prefer Detroit as a city and love the urban environment but I really don't think I can justify the cost difference between both schools. As far as my career interests go, I've always had a strong interest in an academic IM residency which would allow me to match into a good fellowship program (particularly heme/onc or cards), but I would like to keep doors open in case my... UNC v UMich v Vanderbilt
Hi everyone! I currently having a hard time making a decision between three schools. Important factors to me are ample research opportunities in my area (stem cell bio), support from MSTP leadership, good student outcomes, and living environment/cost of living. University of Michigan Pros - Lots of research in my area - Top Internal Med residency program - Strong Match List -Curriculum seems more flexible with quizzes -One full year of rotations prior to starting Phd Cons -Expensive... UAB vs UVA. Please Help!
Thanks in advance. Both P/F Both out of State, so I would have to move regardless Both offering about ~$30k per yr in scholarships ( UAB slightly cheaper) Both has similar rankings Both great programs Both great interview and second look experiences. Not being able to visit due to COVID, makes my feel for the surrounding environment limited. I prefer a warmer and urban environment, however, I'm flexible. I am truly struggling to decide between these two. Any input would be greatly... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

What are some medical schools with a social justice/healthcare for underserved focus?
Hi all, I'm putting together my list of schools and I was wondering if anyone has any suggestions for medical schools which are good for people who want to go into care for underserved people. I'm interested in working with unhoused people (that's what I do now), and generally want to pursue a combination of advocacy along with medical practice, I'm potentially looking into MD/MPH programs, and I want to make sure I'm not missing schools that would provide a good environment for that. Some... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Splitting time with EM/CC
Hi all, I have a question here that has a couple components. 1) I am a current IM resident (PGY2) looking to pursue CCM. From the IM route, I know it is most feasible to go the PCCM route (or nephrology, ID...), and am told it's easier to get hired that way. Also, I know many people prefer an alternate work environment to the ICU. 2) I am finding myself not as interested in pulm, and don't foresee wanting to do clinic 3) I had a much better EM experience as a resident (absolutely loved... FSU COM vs FIU HWCOM vs Penn State (Decision Pending)
Personal: I am a Florida resident, but went out of state to a T20 for undergrad and did not like the competitive pre-medical environment there... so I want to be a part of a supportive and collaborative medical school community. Being close to my support system would be a possibility at all 3 options, as my family lives in Florida and my partner works entirely remote. I do not care for night life, but I do love places with good food options, coffee spots, things to do in the... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

UCSF vs Cornell
* I have not received financial aid packages yet -- will update when I do. For now, let's assume that costs are equal. (Low income so perhaps receiving full CoA at both). UCSF: Pros: P/F Preclinical and Clinical; No AOA Less stress overall Location/Weather - basically 60F year-round Collaborative environment Vibed with the students Stronger clinical training Closer to home Prestige? UCSF might take the slight edge on this one Top-ranked in all specialties... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Relocating with family for International Medical School
My apologies in advance for the length. I am a 37 year old non traditional student married with 3 children. My original plan was to do a diy post bacc, take the MCAT and apply in the US. For a number of reasons surrounding the current environment in the US, I would like to relocate my family out of the US, but potentially leave the door open to return. I am looking into international medical schools in countries where it is easier to bring your family. I would not be opposed to staying... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)
