Myopia and Rate of Peripapillary Retinal Nerve Fiber Layer Thickness in Diabetic Patients Without Retinopathy: A 2-Year Longitudinal Study
CONCLUSIONS: The diabetes group showed a faster rate of average pRNFL thickness reduction compared to healthy controls, regardless of the presence of myopia. The average pRNFL thickness decreased more rapidly when diabetes and myopia were present simultaneously than in the individual diabetes or myopia group. Both diabetes and myopia were associated with accelerated pRNFL loss.PMID:38647053 | DOI:10.1080/02713683.2024.2327087 (Source: Current Eye Research)

Glycaemic control among adults with type 2 diabetes mellitus in the Gulf Cooperation Council countries: an updated review
Endokrynol Pol. 2024 Apr 22. doi: 10.5603/ep.99519. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTType 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) has become a major public health concern, causing significant disability and death worldwide. Fuelled by a modern sedentary lifestyle and poor dietary practices, T2DM affects at least 10.5% of the world's population. This paper seeks to review the progress made by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) countries (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates) in addressing T2DM, focusing on glycaemic control proportions and comparing it with the 2015 review. The results indicate no signif...

Management of Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus With Noninsulin Pharmacotherapy
Am Fam Physician. 2024 Apr;109(4):333-342.ABSTRACTType 2 diabetes mellitus is a chronic disease that is increasing in global prevalence. An individualized approach to pharmacotherapy should consider costs, benefits beyond glucose control, and adverse events. Metformin is the first-line therapy due to its low cost and effectiveness. Sulfonylureas and thiazolidinediones are additional low-cost oral hypoglycemic classes available in the United States; however, evidence shows variability in weight gain and hypoglycemia. Thiazolidinediones increase fluid retention and are not recommended in patients with New York Heart Associat...

Redox Status as a Key Driver of Healthy Pancreatic Beta-Cells
Physiol Res. 2024 Apr 22. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRedox status plays a multifaceted role in the intricate physiology and pathology of pancreatic beta-cells, the pivotal regulators of glucose homeostasis through insulin secretion. They are highly responsive to changes in metabolic cues where reactive oxygen species are part of it, all arising from nutritional intake. These molecules not only serve as crucial signaling intermediates for insulin secretion but also participate in the nuanced heterogeneity observed within the beta-cell population. A central aspect of beta-cell redox biology revolves around the localized p...

Potential immune-related therapeutic mechanisms of multiple traditional Chinese medicines on type 2 diabetic nephropathy based on bioinformatics, network pharmacology and molecular docking
CONCLUSION: The potential hub biomarkers and immunotherapy targets associated with immune cells of T2DN comprise CXCR1, CXCR2, and FOS. Furthermore, kaempferol, quercetin, and luteolin demonstrate potential immunomodulatory effects in modulating T2DN through the regulation of CXCR1, CXCR2, and FOS expression.PMID:38648716 | DOI:10.1016/j.intimp.2024.112044 (Source: International Immunopharmacology)

Effects of an environmentally relevant mixture of organochlorine pesticide compounds on adipogenesis and adipocyte function in an immortalized human adipocyte model
Toxicol In Vitro. 2024 Apr 20:105831. doi: 10.1016/j.tiv.2024.105831. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTExposure to persistent organic pollutants (POPs), including organochlorine (OC) pesticide POPs, has been associated with the increased prevalence of obesity and type 2 diabetes. However, the underlying mechanisms through which exposure to these compounds may promote obesity and metabolic dysfunction remain an area of active investigation. To this end, the concentration dependent effects of an environmentally relevant mixture of OC pesticide POPs on adipocyte function was explored utilizing a translationally relevant immortal...

Factors associated with development of retinopathy in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus at onset and within three years after diagnosis
CONCLUSION: These findings indicate that the risk of developing diabetes retinopathy is present early on at onset and within the first three years of diabetes diagnosis. This highlights the importance of promptly regulating glucose- and blood-pressure levels and follow up kidney dysfunction to mitigate the risk of diabetes retinopathy.PMID:38647202 | DOI:10.1080/02813432.2024.2329215 (Source: Primary Care)

Understanding suboptimal insulin use in type 1 and 2 diabetes: a cross-sectional survey of healthcare providers who treat people with diabetes
CONCLUSIONS: Other studies have shown that PwD frequently experience suboptimal insulin dosing. Conversely, results from this study showed that HCPs believe suboptimal insulin dosing among PwD is limited in frequency. While no direct comparisons were made in this study, this apparent discrepancy could lead to difficulties in HCPs giving PwD the best advice on optimal insulin management. Approaches such as improving the objectivity of dose measurements for both PwD and HCPs may improve associated communications and help reduce suboptimal insulin dosing, thus enhancing treatment outcomes.PMID:38649812 | DOI:10.1186/s12875-02...
