Understanding the action mechanisms of metformin in the gastrointestinal tract
Metformin is the initial medication recommended for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). In addition to diabetes treatment, the function of metformin also can be anti-aging, antiviral, and anti-inflammatory. Nevertheless, further exploration is required to fully understand its mode of operation. Historically, the liver has been acknowledged as the main location where metformin reduces glucose levels, however, there is increasing evidence suggesting that the gastrointestinal tract also plays a significant role in its action. In the gastrointestinal tract, metformin effects glucose uptake and absorption, increas...

Impact of type 2 diabetes on complications after primary breast cancer surgery: Danish population-based cohort study
CONCLUSION: Women with breast cancer and T2D had a higher risk of complications after primary breast cancer surgery than those without T2D. A synergistic effect of T2D and co-morbidity on surgical complications can explain this association.PMID:38536933 | DOI:10.1093/bjs/znae072 (Source: The British Journal of Surgery)

Impaired muscle oxygenation despite normal pulmonary function in uncomplicated type 2 diabetes
Am J Physiol Endocrinol Metab. 2024 Mar 27. doi: 10.1152/ajpendo.00392.2023. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTLong-term hyperglycemia in individuals with type 2 diabetes can detrimentally impact pulmonary function and muscle oxygenation. As a result, these factors can impede the body's adaptation to physical exertion. We aimed to evaluate the oxygen pathway during maximal exercise among overweight/obese individuals with uncomplicated type 2 diabetes, in comparison with a group of matched overweight/obese individuals without diabetes, specifically concentrating on the effects on pulmonary function and muscle oxygenation. Fifte...

Can artificial intelligence detect type 2 diabetes in women by evaluating the pectoral muscle on tomosynthesis: diagnostic study
CONCLUSION: Our study presented a pioneering approach, applying deep learning for the detection of diabetes mellitus status in women using pectoral muscle images and was found to function with an accuracy rate of 92%.CRITICAL RELEVANCE STATEMENT: AI can differentiate pathological changes within pectoral muscle tissue by assessing radiological images and maybe a potential diagnostic tool for detecting diabetes mellitus and other diseases that affect muscle tissues.KEY POINTS: • AI may have an opportunistic use as a screening exam for diabetes during digital breast tomosynthesis. • This technique allows for early and non...

A short-term economic evaluation of early insulin therapy compared to oral anti-diabetic drugs in order to reduce the major adverse events in type 2 diabetes patients in Iran
CONCLUSION: In terms of cost-effectiveness, early insulin therapy was not cost-effective compared to OADs for managing newly diagnosed T2DM patients. Future studies in this regard, utilizing more comprehensive evidence, can yield more accurate results.PMID:38533582 | DOI:10.1080/03007995.2024.2333425 (Source: Current Medical Research and Opinion)

Agents that promote the selective expansion of these cells might stimulate regeneration of the compromised alveolar epithelium, an etiology defining event in several pulmonary diseases. From a high content imaging screen of the d...

Association of Premorbid GLP-1RA and SGLT-2i Prescription Alone and in Combination with COVID-19 Severity
ConclusionAmong adults who tested positive for SARS-CoV-2, premorbid use of either GLP-1RA or SGLT-2i is associated with lower odds of mortality compared to DPP-4i. Furthermore, concomitant use of GLP-1RA and SGLT-2i is linked to lower odds of other severe COVID-19 outcomes, including ER visits, hospitalizations, and mechanical ventilation, compared to SGLT-2i use alone.Graphical abstract available for this article.Graphical Abstract (Source: Diabetes Therapy)

Association of anti-diabetic drugs and covid-19 outcomes in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2 and chronic kidney disease: Nationwide registry analysis
by Jelena Dimnjakovi ć, Tamara Buble, Pero Ivanko, Tamara Poljičanin, Sandra Karanović Štambuk, Hana Brborović, Ognjen Brborović IntroductionPatients with diabetes mellitus type 2 and chronic kidney disease (T2DM-CKD) have a 5 times higher risk of developing severe SARS-CoV-2 infection than those without these 2 diseases. The goal of this study is to provide information on T2DM-CKD and COVID-19 outcomes, with an emphasis on the association with anti-diabetic medications. MethodologyStudy is designed as a retrospective cohort analysis covering the years 2020 and 2021. Data from the National Diabetes Registry (CroDiab)...
