How Hospitals and CMGs Killed Our EM Small Democratic Group (SDG)
How Hospitals and CMGs Killed Our EM SDG The group I'm with was started by a small group of EM docs several decades ago and was a doctor-owned SDG, initially. They expanded by adding several other ED contracts at other hospitals. Then they added a hospitalist contract and multiple outpatient providers in multiple offices. Then one day, after many years of threats, hospitals started amputating our ED and hospitalists contracts in favor of cheaper CMG labor. 60% of our group was destroyed in... Am I obligated to take call on nursing home patients?
I am actually an internist but in a rural area. Just curious because the local nursing home seems to think they can just call me 24/7 about patients I’ve seen in the clinic and expect me to write these long-ass nursing orders for them. Pretty sure this was not in my contract and is actually the job of the nursing home medical director. Am I wrong about this? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Veterinary Emergency Group (VEG): what's the catch?
Hey all, I just attended a lecture about this new emergency company called VEG, and it seems too good to be true as to what they offer. Do any of you have any insight regarding their contracts or how it really is? Feel free to PM me! (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How many hours do you average a week?
So - random question from a non doc (I am an ED Rph). I work pretty closely with our docs which is a democratic group that has a one hospital contract for as long as I have been here (16 years). I have heard a couple of the docs says that they have "literally one of the best set ups in the country" and i was curious as to how it compares to other places. They average 12-14 shifts a month - technically they are 9 hour shifts, but it is common to often leave before that (depends on that one... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Likelihood of medical license denial due to residency probation and contract non-renewal
Hey guys The contract for my residency has been non-renewed after a prolonged period of probation. This had to do with competency issues and increased supervision requirements rather than something drug related, criminal or otherwise unethical. How likely is this going to lead to a license denial? I really need to provide for my family in the interim before my next residency. The state is Ohio, if that makes a difference. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Licensing Questions
Hey all, I'm switching from a surgical to non-surgical specialty after contract nonrenewal from a prior program. The cited reasons were primarily technical skills, but the official notification letter also included professionalism (this was just some minor stuff in peer evals, not the true reason for nonrenewal) I've been accepted to a new program and haven't had much conversation with the PD about this since it didn't come up in the interview and there hasn't been much other... Current Future of Emergency Medicine
Is bleak: ACEP hosted a webinar yesterday and just around the time some of you future little EM Docs graduate from residency, there may not be jobs. There is a large bloat of terrible EM programs hosted by CMGs (groups that buy contracts in EDs and staff them (ie TeamHealth)) and they are flooding our market with a surplus of grads. Covid has played a large part in this as well. This has been a rapid progression though. Just a few years ago my... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Mental health issues and licensing
I am an AMG. After medical school graduation, I was hospitalized several times for bipolar psychosis before receiving the correct diagnosis and treatment, which ended up costing me my residency (after my program found out I was admitted to a psych unit they insisted I see an outside psychiatrist who confirmed the initial diagnosis; because of this the program did not renew my contract). I did not complete intern year. Fortunately I am now in full remission. After consultation with an... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Independent Contractor Reclassification Coming
"As Fox Business notes, the PRO Act also includes a provision that reclassifies many independent contractors as employees. That repeats the policy enacted by California’s Democrat-dominated legislature in 2019 in AB 5,..." Check your contracts, taxes, and status before this... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

controlled substances prescribing with medical MJ card
I was wondering if anyone has any take on this. I trained in a state where there was no medical MJ law and if a patient was found to be on MJ on UDS, their controlled substance contract was "terminated" (no more controlled substances from the clinic). Currently I live in a state where medical MJ is legal and very common. If you prescribe controlled substances (e.g. chronic opioids, benzodiazepines) would you suspend these prescriptions if a patient has MJ show up on a urine drug screen, or... I need advice. I don't know what to do.
Match day today... I matched to IM.. my 10th rank. I had 9 categorical gen surg interviews. I am devastated. What are my options? I know that the NRMP considers your contract "complete" after 45 days. Can I look for spots that open up for categorical PGY1 surgery after July 1st? Or can I use the program that searches for open residency spots and potentially change spots any time during my IM intern year? I know that I can reapply for the match (and I will), but can I apply for PGY2 after 1... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

what about this psych business idea?
So what if one were to set up shop in a medium size area....not too big, not too small. Let's say a place like fayetville, nc. Or even a little bigger in Greensboro, nc. You know....200-350k in the city limits, but if you go 50 mins in any direction you get an area of 650k...maybe a little more. Not those places in particular since I have no idea what the MH scene is like there, but you get the point. Then you just come in and bust up the whole MH scene by taking on contracts promising...
