Is Ophtho falling from grace?
- Almost half of the work comprehensive ophthos do in clinic could be handled fine by an optometrist + optometrists gaining surgical rights in some states - Low flexibility since most hospitals do not hire ophthos and would rather contract with PP groups (he said this was because they don't generate ancillary income from consults, labs, imaging...etc) + PP groups offering low salaries due to no competition with hospitals - Start up costs are prohibitively high (100,000+ for equipment) and... Help w/ 2 contract offers.
1. Big DSO. Crazy busy area (coastal SC). Base salary of 140k/year OR 25% collections. 2 year commitment. 30k sign on bonus. (20 first year and 10 second) Opening up a new practice w/ older/more seasoned doc. I feel like the area is growing rapidly. I would have (hopefully) a good mentor. And being in a 2 doc office in a new area, i think i would have the opportunity to get my speed up and make decent money! Liked the vibe, but did not LOVE it. 2. Small DSO. Smaller coastal town in NC. 2... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

"new grads"
For all you new grads (last 3-5 yrs) who join private practices, how did it turn out? Was it short term gig? Did you settle for a bad contract? Are you a partner now? Did you relocate? Hows the current market now that COVID is largely passed. Did you start a practice instead? Are you happy? I think this group of people is the best representation of what direction podiatry is going so im curious. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

How can I clean my residency training record and find a residency training opportunity?
I had a PGY-1 residency training program 3 years ago. I got a PGY-1 training certificate from the PGY-1 program which said I provided satisfactory service in the clinical rotation. The pgy-1 program did not renew my residency contract; no specific reason was told. Residency contract appeal was not approved by GME. I had tried to apply to a new residency opportunity, but no one worked. Some programs said I got negative reference, but I cannot know the content of the negative reference from... Employment benefits - written in contract?
Hi I am reviewing a physician employment contract from a large group and they don’t mention medical insurance as a benefit in the contract. They have a brochure with multiple options from a national carrier. Is this something I need to be concerned about? It seems strange not to include it as a benefit in writing. Per diem for NAPA - direct contact vs using a locum agency
Hello, There is a per diem job in NH advertised by NAPA and some locum agencies. I was wondering if it is better to contact them directly and negotiate the rate/contract vs using any locum company to represent me. I am not worried about a buyout - I won't consider working for NAPA full time. I read here on forums that NAPA doesn't like to negotiate, but I guess it also can be area specific and experience may differ from one person to another. It would be reasonable to think that I should... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Non-competes!
Does anybody have personal experiences with "non-competes" in medicine or obviously more specifically radiation oncology? I've heard everything from they are not at all enforceable in some states (but then why would they even be in the contract?) to the hospital will sue your pants off and take your first born if you try to make a living within 50 miles (even from one of their satellite centers 100 miles from where you actually previously worked), and more seriously they are enforceable but... Why is ophthalmology so competitive in 2022?
Ophtho is one of the most competitive specialties, but why? This is not meant as a dig at all -- I'm simply a medical student trying to make a more informed choice. I hope this does not rub someone the wrong way. Compensation is SO low. I used to believe MGMA/national data, but after having talks with several attendings and residents who signed new contracts, the average is simply NOT 350k. In academic positions (which is what I’m leaning right now), most comprehensive attendings at my... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Opportunities in Colorado?
FYI. Heard yesterday that USAP is exiting a number of Centura Health and HCA hospital contracts in Denver pending a USAP Colorado partner vote. Can’t recruit enough to cover the losses of those leaving USAP and the finances are upside down. Those of you wiling to relocate have a chance to set up your own practices or in partnership with others. Something frequently discussed in this forum. (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Dermatology noncompetes
Let's talk about noncompete clauses in dermatology. Clearly the time, distance, and scope can be modified and negotiated, but for those dermatologists who refused to sign any noncompete, how did it turn out? What was your strategy for negotiating them out of your contract? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

2022 Grad First job
Hello I am a new grad about to start my first job. I formally know the owner for the past five years as I have assisted him for couple of months in the past. He needs an associate who can handle his second office. He has not given me any contract, and everything is verbal at this point. I just want to know that if it's a good idea to start your first job without the contract and are there any legal implications that can put my license in Jeopardy if I start working without signing... How to aggressively save/invest and avoid taxes?
Hi 👋 I am looking for financial advices to squeeze as much 💰 as possible, and possibly FIRE... I got multiple contract opportunities for remote jobs, and very possibly double my current salary in a few months, with total comp >= 500k/yr. I have maxed out 401k and HSA. I have two real estate properties worth 2M in total, one for rental income and another one for myself. No student loan debt, only ~1.0-1.1M mortgage. Any tips to avoid paying too much taxes next year? (Source: Student Doctor Network)
