Formulation analysis of functional fragrance via polar-gradient extraction method and chemometrics pattern recognition
In this study, characteristic components of 15 natural flavors was analyzed by the polar-gradient extraction (PGE) technique in combination with GC-MS and chemometrics pattern recognition. The obtained results were utilized for the traceability of 4 functional fragrance formulations. The optimal PGE system consisting of 5 different polar solvents, was developed based on similarity-intermiscibility theory. Four chemometrics pattern recognition models including PCA, HCA, PLS-DA, and OPLS-DA were constructed based on the characteristic component database constituting 15 natural flavors. These models were used to trace 4 funct...

Fangchinoline inhibits growth and biofilm of Candida albicans by inducing ROS overproduction
J Cell Mol Med. 2024 May;28(9):e18354. doi: 10.1111/jcmm.18354.ABSTRACTInfections caused by Candida species, especially Candida albicans, threaten the public health and create economic burden. Shortage of antifungals and emergence of drug resistance call for new antifungal therapies while natural products were attractive sources for developing new drugs. In our study, fangchinoline, a bis-benzylisoquinoline alkaloid from Chinese herb Stephania tetrandra S. Moore, exerted antifungal effects on planktonic growth of several Candida species including C. albicans, with MIC no more than 50 μg/mL. In addition, results from micro...

Screening of the effective sites of Cichorium glandulosum against hyperuricemia combined with hyperlipidemia and its network pharmacology analysis
This study aims to explore the pharmacological effects and mechanisms of Cichorium glandulosum on this comorbidity through a combination of animal experiments, network pharmacology, and molecular docking techniques. A rat model of hyperuricaemia combined with hyperlipidaemia was established through a high-fat and high-purine diet, and the effective parts of the aqueous extract of Cichorium glandulosum to reduce uric acid and lipid levels were screened and the components of the parts were analysed by LC-MS/MS. The active components, core targets, and key pathways were analysed using network pharmacology and validated by mol...

Pharmacological and Therapeutic Potential of Berbamine: A Potent Alkaloid from Genus Berberis
Curr Top Med Chem. 2024 Apr 29. doi: 10.2174/0115680266289292240420062705. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBerbamine (Ber) is an active medicinal bisbenzylisoquinoline alkaloid, which is usually obtained from different plants of the genus Berberis (family Berberidaceae) and is used to cure various disorders in traditional Chinese and Ayurvedic systems of medicine. Numerous in-vitro and in-vivo studies revealed the apoptotic and cytotoxic potential of Ber against different cell lines (SMMC-7721, A549, MDA-MB-231, and K562) by upregulating pro-apoptotic (Bax, p53) and downregulating anti-apoptotic (Bcl-2, survivin) proteins. O...

Acidification induce chemical and microbial variation in tea plantation soils and bacterial degradation of the key acidifying phenolic acids
Arch Microbiol. 2024 Apr 30;206(5):239. doi: 10.1007/s00203-024-03858-z.ABSTRACTCamellia sinensis is an important economic plant grown in southern subtropical hilly areas, especially in China, mainly for the production of tea. Soil acidification is a significant cause of the reduction of yield and quality and continuous cropping obstacles in tea plants. Therefore, chemical and microbial properties of tea growing soils were investigated and phenolic acid-degrading bacteria were isolated from a tea plantation. Chemical and ICP-AES investigations showed that the soils tested were acidic, with pH values of 4.05-5.08, and the p...

Fever-induced acute sleep terrors in children and adolescents following SARS-CoV-2 infection
CONCLUSION: SARS-CoV-2 infection may precipitate acute sleep terrors in children and adolescents. The course of these sleep terrors is generally benign, with all patients achieving spontaneous complete remission over time.PMID:38689200 | DOI:10.1007/s11325-024-03038-9 (Source: Sleep and Breathing)

Concentrations, sources and health risk of bisphenols in red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) from South-Eastern China
Chemosphere. 2024 Apr 27:142187. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2024.142187. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTBisphenol analogs (BPs) are extensively employed in commercial and industrial products and they have been found in a variety of environmental matrices and human samples. The red swamp crayfish (Procambarus clarkii) has been a trendy food in China in recent decades. However, the levels of BPs in Chinese crayfish and the associated hazards of human exposure remain unknown. Thus, in this study, the levels of eight BPs in crayfish gathered from five major provinces engaged in crayfish within the Yangtze River Basin were analy...

Effects of dextran molecular weight on starch retrogradation and technological properties of Chinese steamed bread: Based on the rubber/glass transition
Int J Biol Macromol. 2024 Apr 27:131887. doi: 10.1016/j.ijbiomac.2024.131887. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTFrom the perspective of rubber/glass transition, this study clarified that the impact of dextran on retarding hardening behavior and slowing starch retrogradation of Chinese Steamed Bread (CSB) depended on its molecular weight and concentration level. Guggenheim-Anderson-de Boer (GAB) model was fitted to explore critical behavior changes in rubber/glass transition of CSB. Incorporation of high molecular weight dextran enhanced the elasticity of dough and porosity of CSB, reduced the aging and hardening degree of CSB ...
