Impact of Using Pre- and Post-Bronchodilator Spirometry Reference Values in a Chinese Population
CONCLUSION: This study generated and applied pre- and post-bronchodilator spirometry reference values in a nationally representative Chinese adult population. Post-BD reference values may serve as an additional criterion in identifying individuals at risk for obstructive pulmonary diseases, its diagnostic and prognostic values should be further investigated.PMID:38687500 | DOI:10.1164/rccm.202308-1488OC (Source: Am J Respir Crit Car...)

Interposition of acellular amniotic membrane at the tendon to bone interface would be better for healing than overlaying above the tendon to bone junction in the repair of rotator cuff injury
CONCLUSION: In the RC repair model, AAM enhanced regeneration of the tendon to bone junction. This regeneration was more effective when the AAM was intervened at the tendon to bone interface than overlaid above the tendon to bone junction.PMID:38688817 | DOI:10.1016/j.cjtee.2024.04.001 (Source: Chinese Journal of Traumatology)

Being close or being alone: How Social ostracism affects solitude preference
Br J Soc Psychol. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.1111/bjso.12753. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSocial ostracism refers to the phenomenon of being excluded from social interactions and not being accepted by society. While previous research has examined its impact on prosocial and antisocial behaviour, few studies have investigated how individuals respond to ostracism by seeking solitude. Therefore, our study aims to explore the association between social ostracism and solitude seeking as well as the potential psychological mechanisms involved. We conducted three studies involving 488 Chinese students (59% female) and found that (a) ...

Oridonin promotes RSL3-induced ferroptosis in breast cancer cells by regulating the oxidative stress signaling pathway JNK/Nrf2/HO-1
This study provides a theoretical basis for the application of ORI based on the mechanism of ferroptosis, and provides potential natural drug candidates for cancer prevention and treatment.PMID:38685305 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejphar.2024.176620 (Source: European Journal of Pharmacology)

Using UAV Images and Deep Learning in Investigating Potential Breeding Sites of Aedes albopictus
Acta Trop. 2024 Apr 28:107234. doi: 10.1016/j.actatropica.2024.107234. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTAedes albopictus (Diptera: Culicidae) plays a crucial role as a vector for mosquito-borne diseases like dengue and zika. Given the limited availability of effective vaccines, the prevention of Aedes-borne diseases mainly relies on extensive efforts in vector surveillance and control. In multiple mosquito control methods, the identification and elimination of potential breeding sites (PBS) for Aedes are recognized as effective methods for population control. Previous studies utilizing unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and deep...

Clinical characteristics and outcomes of acute liver failure in neonates: a retrospective cohort in China
Conclusion: Hypoxic/ischemic injury and infection are the predominant etiologies of NALF in China. The overall prognosis of NALF is poor, but its short-term prognosis is determined by the etiology. What is Known: • Neonatal acute liver failure (NALF) is a rare disorder with limited cohort studies, especially in China. • Gestational alloimmune liver disease, viral infections (especially herpes simplex virus), metabolic diseases and ischemic insults are common etiologies of NALF, which are significantly different from other populations. • There are no reliable biochemical markers to predict the outcome of NALF. What is...

A genetic variant study of bortezomib-induced peripheral neuropathy in Chinese multiple myeloma patients
CONCLUSION: CYP2A6, EPHX1, MTHFR, ALDH1A1, HTR7, MME and BIPN are linked in Chinese MM patients. BIPN is more likely to occur in patients with lower MTHFR mRNA expression, which might result in higher serum Hcy levels.PMID:38686049 | PMC:PMC11055991 | DOI:10.32604/or.2023.043922 (Source: Oncology Research)

The Effects of Health Education and the Sunrise Model of Nursing Care on Blood Pressure Control and Psychological Status in Elderly Patients with Hypertension
CONCLUSION: Compared with routine nursing intervention, the health education and positive attitude nursing intervention can further improve BP control, psychological status and satisfaction and recognition level of elderly patients with HTN; it can be an important clinical nursing intervention.PMID:38687864 (Source: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine)

Efficacy of Breast-Conserving Surgery Versus Modified Radical Surgery in the Treatment of Early Breast Cancer: A Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSION: In the treatment of early breast cancer, breast-conserving surgery has the advantages of less bleeding, fewer clinical complications, and favorable cosmetic outcomes compared with modified radical surgery. Furthermore, patients with breast-conserving surgery showed comparable recurrence and distant metastatic rates to those with modified radical surgery in postoperative follow-up, which, therefore is a suitable treatment option for the widespread recommendation. The study's findings hold significant clinical relevance, implying that while BCT remains a viable option, MRM may offer a survival advantage. This ins...

Meta-analysis of the Efficacy of Photodynamic Therapy (PDT) in the Treatment of Peri-implantitis
CONCLUSION: Compared to other non-surgical treatments, PDT treatment has significant advantages in reducing peri-implant probing depth and bleeding in patients with peri-implantitis. These results suggest that PDT may be a more effective non-surgical option for reducing probing depth and bleeding in patients with peri-implantitis. Of course, future studies with larger sample sizes and longer follow-up periods are needed to confirm these findings.PMID:38687855 (Source: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine)

Factors Influencing Iatrogenic Skin Injury in Neonates and Nursing Strategies
CONCLUSION: Length of stay, orotracheal intubation use, and gastric tube use are independent risk factors for iatrogenic skin injury in neonates. Hospital stays and unnecessary use of orotracheal intubation and gastric tube should be reduced in future clinical management. Attention should be paid to strengthening skin observation and care, keeping skin dry and clean, and preventing iatrogenic skin injury.PMID:38687850 (Source: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine)

Associations of combined phenotypic aging and genetic risk with incident cancer: A prospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Within and across genetic risk groups, older PhenoAge was consistently related to an increased risk of incident cancer with adjustment for chronological age and the aging process could be retarded by adherence to a healthy lifestyle.FUNDING: This work was supported by the National Natural Science Foundation of China (82230110, 82125033, 82388102 to GJ; 82273714 to MZ); and the Excellent Youth Foundation of Jiangsu Province (BK20220100 to MZ).PMID:38687190 | DOI:10.7554/eLife.91101 (Source: Cancer Control)

Pharmacokinetic, Pharmacodynamic, and Safety Profiles of Proline Henagliflozin in Chinese Subjects with Varying Degrees of Liver Dysfunction
J Clin Pharmacol. 2024 Apr 30. doi: 10.1002/jcph.2437. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTProline henagliflozin, a novel selective inhibitor of sodium glucose cotransporter 2, is a treatment for type 2 diabetes mellitus. We designed a parallel-group, open-label, and multicenter study to evaluate the pharmacokinetic (PK), pharmacodynamic (PD), and safety profiles of henagliflozin in Chinese subjects with varying degrees of liver dysfunction. Thirty-two subjects were enrolled and divided into four groups based on liver function (normal liver function, mild, moderate, or severe liver dysfunction). The area under the plasma concent...
