Drug-induced AF: Arrhythmogenic Mechanisms and Management Strategies
AF is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia, affecting millions of people globally.1 It is associated with an increased risk of various adverse health outcomes, such as heart failure, stroke, dementia and other conditions, placing a substantial burden on healthcare systems worldwide.2Despite significant advances in the development of drugs and interventional procedures for the treatment of AF, t... Heart Transplantation for Malignant Arrhythmia: Indications and Outcomes
Purpose: Cardiac arrhythmias can lead to life-threatening events and heart failure. When intractable, heart transplant can become the only viable management option. Although rare, this high-risk arrhythmia patient population has not been reported as a distinct group. We aimed to characterize the outcomes of pediatric patients listed for heart transplantation with the primary indication being malignant arrhythmia (MA). Addressing Cardiovascular Toxicity Risk of Electronic Nicotine Delivery Systems in the Twenty-First Century: "What Are the Tools Needed for the Job?" and "Do We Have Them?"
Cardiovasc Toxicol. 2024 Mar 31. doi: 10.1007/s12012-024-09850-9. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCigarette smoking is positively and robustly associated with cardiovascular disease (CVD), including hypertension, atherosclerosis, cardiac arrhythmias, stroke, thromboembolism, myocardial infarctions, and heart failure. However, after more than a decade of ENDS presence in the U.S. marketplace, uncertainty persists regarding the long-term health consequences of ENDS use for CVD. New approach methods (NAMs) in the field of toxicology are being developed to enhance rapid prediction of human health hazards. Recent technical advanc...

In-Hospital Pulmonary Arterial Embolism after Catheter Ablation of Over 45,000 Cardiac Arrhythmias: Individualized Case Analysis of Multicentric Data
CONCLUSION: Over a 15-year period, incidence of PE after ablation is low, particularly low in patients with ablation for AF/AFlu. This is most likely due to stricter anticoagulation management in these patients compared with those receiving SVT/VT ablation procedures and could argue for continuation of OAC prior to ablation. Optimizing periprocedural anticoagulation management should be subject of further prospective trials.PMID:38555641 | DOI:10.1055/s-0044-1785519 (Source: Thrombosis and Haemostasis)

Impact of Abnormal Potassium on Arrhythmia Risk During Pediatric Digoxin Therapy
AbstractDigoxin is used in children with heart failure and tachyarrhythmia. Its use in patients with single ventricle anatomy has increased following evidence of improved interstage survival after the Norwood procedure. Digoxin has a narrow therapeutic window and may alter serum potassium balance, inducing arrhythmias. We hypothesized digoxin use in the setting of abnormal serum potassium levels is associated with arrhythmias. We reviewed all patients  ≤ 18 years who received digoxin while admitted at our institution from 2014 to 2021. Admissions <  2 nights were excluded. We compared patients with a hemodyna...

Lower Oral Anticoagulant Prescribing for Atrial Fibrillation in Women compared to Men
Background: Atrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia and is associated with increased risk of thromboembolic stroke.1 Stroke risk in AF varies greatly with age, sex and comorbidities. CHADS2VASc score2 is a commonly used to predict the annual risk of stroke and is calculated by adding 1 point each for the presence of congestive heart failure, hypertension, age> 65 and (Source: The American Journal of Cardiology)
