Decreased connexin 40 expression of the sinoatrial node mediates ischemic stroke-induced arrhythmia in mice
CONCLUSIONS: In conclusion, decreased connexin 40 expression in the sinoatrial node contributed to the ischemic stroke-induced cardiac arrhythmia. Therefore, enhancing connexin 40 expression holds promise as a potential therapeutic approach for ischemic stroke-induced arrhythmia.PMID:38599368 | DOI:10.1016/j.expneurol.2024.114773 (Source: Experimental Neurology)

Inhaled bronchodilators for the prevention and treatment of chronic lung disease in preterm infants
CONCLUSIONS: Low-certainty evidence from one trial showed that inhaled bronchodilator prophylaxis may result in little or no difference in the incidence of mortality or CLD in preterm infants, when compared to placebo. The evidence is very uncertain about the effect of salbutamol on pneumothorax, and neither included study reported on the incidence of serious adverse effects. We identified no trials that studied the use of bronchodilator therapy for the treatment of CLD. Additional clinical trials are necessary to assess the role of bronchodilator agents in the prophylaxis or treatment of CLD. Researchers studying the effe...

Phosphorylation-dependent allosteric regulation of Cx43 gap junction inhibitor potency
In this study, we used molecular docking, dual whole-cell patch-clamp, and Western blotting to investigate the impact of connexin phosphorylation on GJ chemical gating by α-pinene and other GJ inhibitors (octanol, carbenoxolone, mefloquine, intracellular pH, glycyrrhetinic acid, and sevoflurane) in HeLa cells expressing exogenous Cx43 (full length and truncated at amino acid 258) and other connexins typical of heart and/or nervous system (Cx36, Cx40, Cx45, and Cx47), and in cells expressing endogenous Cx43 (Novikoff and U-87). We found that Ca2+-regulated kinases, such as Ca2+/calmodulin-dependent kinase II, atypical prot...

Effects of plant extracts and derivatives on cardiac K < sup > + < /sup > , Nav, and Ca < sub > v < /sub > channels: a review
Nat Prod Res. 2024 Apr 8:1-28. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2024.2337112. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTNatural products (NPs) are endless sources of compounds for fighting against several pathologies. Many dysfunctions, including cardiovascular disorders, such as cardiac arrhythmias have their modes of action regulation of the concentration of electrolytes inside and outside the cell targeting ion channels. Here, we highlight plant extracts and secondary metabolites' effects on the treatment of related cardiac pathologies on hERG, Nav, and Cav of cardiomyocytes. The natural product's pharmacology of expressed receptors like alph...

Automated cardiac arrhythmia detection techniques: a comprehensive review for prospective approach
In this study, it is noticed that the performance of the machine-learning-based arrhythmia detection techniques depend on pre-processing of ECG signal, R-peaks detection, features extraction and classification tools while the deep-learning-based techniques do not require the features extraction step. Generally, the existing techniques utilize Massachusetts Institute of Technology-Beth Israel Hospital arrhythmia database to evaluate the classification performance. The classification performance of automated techniques also depends on ECG data used for training and testing of the classifier. It is expected that the performan...

Evaluation of cardiac arrhythmia in pediatric patients with Left Ventricular Assist Device (L-VAD)
CONCLUSIONS: In patients undergoing L-VAD implantation, rhythm disorders that could normally lead to hemodynamic instability are frequently encountered. In these rhythm disorders, medical therapy should be attempted before resorting to cardioversion or defibrillation, and subsequently, more aggressive treatment methods should be considered.PMID:38567583 | DOI:10.26355/eurrev_202403_35724 (Source: Pharmacological Reviews)
