Delays in cervical cancer treatment initiation for patients living with or without HIV in Botswana: An observational cohort analysis (2015-2019)
CONCLUSIONS: Delays in care are common in Botswana, particularly for those living farther from the treatment clinic and at advanced stages. This paper is among the first to show an association between treatment delays and worsened OS at advanced stages of cervical cancer, highlighting the need for interventions to help patients receive timely care in global settings.PMID:38462016 | DOI:10.1016/j.ijrobp.2024.02.038 (Source: Health Physics)

Potential immune evasion of the severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 Omicron variants
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19), which is caused by the novel severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), has caused a global pandemic. The Omicron variant (B.1.1.529) was first discovered in November 2021 in specimens collected from Botswana, South Africa. Omicron has become the dominant variant worldwide, and several sublineages or subvariants have been identified recently. Compared to those of other mutants, the Omicron variant has the most highly expressed amino acid mutations, with almost 60 mutations throughout the genome, most of which are in the spike (S) protein, especially in the receptor-bi...

High prevalence of pre-treatment and acquired HIV-1 drug resistance mutations among non-citizens living with HIV in Botswana
ConclusionWe report high rates of PDR and ADR in ART-experienced and ART-naïve non-citizens, respectively, in Botswana. Given the uncertainty of time of HIV acquisition and treatment adherence levels in this population, routine HIV-1C VL monitoring coupled with HIVDR genotyping is crucial for long-term ART success. Molecular characterization of Haemoproteus enucleator with emphasis on the host and geographic distribution
This study combined microscopic and molecular approaches to characterize Haemoproteus enucleator morphologically and molecularly. Blood samples were collected from the African pygmy kingfisher Ispidina picta in Cameroon, and the parasite was identified using morphological characters of gametocytes. The analysis of partial cytochrome b sequences (cytb) identified a new Haemoproteus lineage (hISPIC03), which was linked to the morphospecies H. enucleator. Illustrations of blood stages were provided and the phylogenetic analysis showed that the new lineage clustered with five other closely related lineages belonging to the sam...

Serengeti ’s ‘breathtaking’ mammal migration shaped by grazers’ diets
Related Reports Long-Term Modulation of Electrical Synapses in the Mammalian Thalamus BY Carole E. Landisman, Barry W. Connors Each April, some 200,000 zebras begin their journey 800 kilometers northward through the Serengeti in Tanzania and into Kenya. About 1.3 million wildebeests join the throng, and after nearly 1 month come 400,000 Thomson’s gazelles. The procession is “breathtaking,” says T. Michael Anderson, a savanna ecologi...

Evaluating Chlamydia trachomatis and Neisseria gonorrhoeae screening and treatment among asymptomatic pregnant women to prevent preterm birth and low birthweight in Gaborone, Botswana: A secondary analysis from a non-randomised, cluster-controlled trial
CONCLUSION: A C. trachomatis and N. gonorrhoeae infection screening and treatment intervention among asymptomatic pregnant women may have reduced preterm birth or low birthweight outcomes, but results were not statistically significant. Post-hoc analysis found that the intervention reduced adverse outcomes among nulliparous participants.PMID:38351649 | DOI:10.1111/1471-0528.17775 (Source: BJOG : An International Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology)

Resurgent rotavirus diarrhoea outbreak five years after introduction of rotavirus vaccine in Botswana, 2018
CONCLUSION: The outbreak was caused by rotavirus G3P[8], a strain that was not common in the country prior to the outbreak. Despite the significant pressure and anxiety that outbreaks cause, the number of diarrhea cases and deaths were less compared to pre-vaccine era due to the impact of vaccination. This highlights the need for continuous implementation of high impact child survival interventions.PMID:38331661 | DOI:10.1016/j.vaccine.2024.01.084 (Source: Vaccine)

Provision of HIV services to psychiatric inpatients in Botswana: Challenges and recommendations
Conclusion: Psychiatric healthcare providers advocated for on-site integration of care for psychiatric illness and HIV among inpatients to address the challenges of ART provision.Contribution: The findings suggest the need to improve the provision of HIV services in the psychiatric hospitals in order to ensure better outcomes for this often-overlooked population. These findings are useful in improving clinical practice for HIV in psychiatric settings. (Source: South African Journal of Psychiatry)

Understanding the mechanisms of meaning-making for transformations toward sustainability: contributions from Personal Knowledge Theory
AbstractThe concept of meaning-making is increasingly identified as a crucial process and an entry point for sustainability transformations in a wide range of contexts and approaches, but it has not yet been studied in this field as an independent concept. In other literature, meaning-making has recently been focused on, yielding valuable information on how to better conceptualize and design events to trigger transformations. Furthermore, that study indicated the presence of underlying mechanisms of meaning-making, which might provide further design insights and theoretical underpinning. Here we investigate those underlyin...

Development, acceptability and usability of culturally appropriate survivor narrative videos for breast cancer treatment in Botswana: a pilot study
Conclusion Culturally appropriate survivor video narratives have high acceptability and usability among patients with breast cancer in Botswana. There is an opportunity to leverage this intervention in routine breast cancer care for treatment support. Future studies will test the implementation and effectiveness of narrative videos on a wider scale, including for patients being treated for other cancers. (Source: BMJ Open)

Comparison on treatment outcomes of patients enrolled on anti-retroviral therapy at different levels of the health-care system in a high HIV/AIDS setting
AIDS Rev. 2023;25(4):173-178. doi: 10.24875/AIDSRev.23000016.ABSTRACTHIV/AIDS prevalence in Botswana is amongst the highest in the world and remains a significant public health problem. however, the introduction of anti-retroviral therapy (ART) lead to a significant reduction in morbidity and mortality. Decentralization of anti-retroviral therapy has improved access to treatment for people living with HIV. Treatment outcomes for patient initiated on treatment at different levels of care is unknown and this study seeks to compare treatment outcomes of patients enrolled on ART at different levels of the health care.
