Do microbes evade domestication? - Evaluating potential ferality among diastatic Saccharomyces cerevisiae
Food Microbiol. 2023 Oct;115:104320. doi: 10.1016/j.fm.2023.104320. Epub 2023 Jun 7.ABSTRACTCertain lineages of the wine, beer and bread yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae have diastatic activity. They contain the chimeric gene STA1 that codes for an extracellular glucoamylase which enables the strains to degrade starch and dextrins. Beer contaminations by diastatic yeasts can be dangerous because they can cause super-attenuation due to the consumption of otherwise non-fermentable oligosaccharides, gushing and off-flavours. Given that diastatic yeasts can be used for beer fermentation it is important to understand the relation...

Potential facilitators and inhibitors to the implementation and sustainability of the community-based tuberculosis care interventions. A case study from Moshupa, Botswana
ConclusionThe findings of this study imply that the operational effectiveness of the community TB care approach to disease elimination is compromised; therefore, initiatives addressing the key components, including the availability of resources, governance arrangements and supportive systems for community health workers, are required for successful community TB implementation and sustainability. Factors associated with low uptake of safe male circumcision (SMC) and the intention not to undergo circumcision among men in Botswana
ConclusionResults from the study show high acceptability but low uptake of SMC. Some individual behavioral factors influencing circumcision status and decision whether to undergo circumcision were identified. Targeted interventions, continuous education, and expansion of the SMC programme are recommended, especially for older men and those in rural areas. (Source: Journal of Public Health)

A review of foot-and-mouth disease status and control measures in Botswana
AbstractFoot-and-mouth disease (FMD), an economically important disease of livestock, is endemic in Botswana. The country has been affected by this disease since the early 1930s, and FMD virus (FMDV) continues to circulate in both domestic and wild animal populations. Botswana is affected by the Southern African Territories (SAT1-3) of FMDV. Up to 80% of the income in the agricultural sector in Botswana is derived from the beef production, and about 70% of Botswana's beef exports go to the European Union (EU) market. Thus, trade restrictions caused by FMD outbreaks may result in declines in revenue. In this review, the FMD...

Youth and healthcare workers ’ perspectives on the feasibility and acceptability of self-testing for HIV, Hepatitis and Syphilis among young people: Qualitative findings from a pilot study in Gaborone, Botswana
ConclusionDual self-testing for HIV and STIs has the potential to empower young people to take control of their sexual health. However, it is crucial to ensure that proper support and counselling services are in place, along with effective mechanisms for linkage to care. This study emphasizes the importance of integrating pre- and post-test counselling into self-testing programs to ensure that young people feel adequately supported throughout the testing process. By doing so, self-testing can become a valuable tool for improving the sexual health outcomes of young people in Botswana. (Source: PLoS One)

Healthcare professionals and pregnant and post-natal women's perceptions of interprofessional collaboration in a maternity care facility: A qualitative study from Botswana
CONCLUSIONS: Effective interprofessional collaboration remains elusive in this maternity care setting. Healthcare systems in low-to-middle-income countries may benefit from interventions for healthcare professionals to learn and practice interprofessional collaborative care.PMID:37467547 | DOI:10.1016/j.midw.2023.103768 (Source: Midwifery)

Feasibility and acceptability of peer-delivered interventions using mHealth for PrEP services among adolescent girls and young women in DREAMS program in Botswana
CONCLUSION: mHealthpeer-delivered interventions appear to be feasible and perceived acceptable among adolescent girls and young women in Botswana. This modality should be incorporated into PEPFAR's programmatic toolkit of implementation strategies to improve PrEP services.PMID:37462118 | DOI:10.1080/16549716.2023.2231256 (Source: Global Health Action)
