Spread through air spaces (STAS) in invasive mucinous adenocarcinoma of the lung: Incidence, prognostic impact, and prediction based on clinicoradiologic factors
ConclusionsSTAS was associated with reduced OS and was a borderline independent poor prognostic factor in IMA. IMA with STAS was associated with older age and presence of lobulated and spiculated margins on CT scan.Key pointsSignificant findings of the studyCompared with other subtypes, IMA shows a higher incidence of STAS, which is an independent poor prognostic predictor even in IMA. Lobulated and spiculated margins on CT are associated with STAS.What this study addsConsidering that STAS can carry the potential for aerogenous metastasis, predicting STAS using preoperative surrogate CT imaging is desirable to avoid limite...

Evaluation of Sialyl-Lactotetra as a Marker for Epithelial Ovarian Tumors
Ovarian carcinoma is a heterogeneous disease with distinct molecular and histological profiles, ranging from low grade atypia to highly aggressive tumors associated with a poor prognosis. In the present study, glycosphingolipids were isolated from human high-grade serous ovarian carcinoma, whereby the novel stem cell marker Sialyl-lactotetra (S-Lc4) was characterized in two out of three cases. The presence and level of S-Lc4 was further evaluated immunohistochemically in a cohort of patients with ovarian tumors ranging from benign lesions to high grade serous carcinoma (n = 478). Its expression was assessed in association ...

Three cases of seromucinous carcinoma of the ovary arising in endometriotic cysts
AbstractOvarian seromucinous carcinoma (SMC) is an uncommon neoplasia and is composed predominantly of serous and endocervical-type mucinous epithelium. Due to its low frequency and difficult diagnosis, the natural history, characteristic imaging findings, and pathological features of SMC have not been adequately described in the literature thus far. We herein report three cases of ovarian SMC along with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) findings. The diagnosis of SMC was made after staging laparotomy in all cases, and systemic chemotherapy was performed in two cases. No recurrence was observed in any of the cases. The MRI ...

Institutional results of OncoOVARIAN Dx - a novel algorithm for the preoperative evaluation of adnexal masses.
CONCLUSIONS: OncoOVARIAN Dx model demonstrated higher Se and NPV compared to ROMA and could be a useful marker in the preoperative management of adnexal masses; however larger studies are warranted to validate and further refine this algorithm. Study of upfront surgery versus neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by interval debulking surgery for patients with stage IIIC and IV ovarian cancer, SGOG SUNNY (SOC-2) trial concept.
Authors: Jiang R, Zhu J, Kim JW, Liu J, Kato K, Kim HS, Zhang Y, Zhang P, Zhu T, Aoki D, Yu A, Chen X, Wang X, Zhu D, Zhang W, Jia H, Shi T, Gao W, Yin S, Feng Y, Xiang L, Okamoto A, Zang R Abstract BACKGROUND: Two randomized phase III trials (EORTC55971 and CHORUS) showed similar progression-free and overall survival in primary or interval debulking surgery in ovarian cancer, however both studies had limitations with lower rate of complete resection and lack of surgical qualifications for participating centers. There is no consensus on whether neoadjuvant chemotherapy followed by interval debulking surger...

Expression of SMAD4 is Retained in Most Gynecologic Tumors with Mucinous Differentiation
SMAD4 is a tumor suppressor gene that plays a role in cancer initiation and progression. A few studies have explored the value of immunohistochemistry for SMAD4 in gynecologic neoplasms, mainly in the ovary. However, literature is sparse when it comes to other sites such as endometrium and cervix, as well as in benign and borderline ovarian mucinous neoplasms. The aim of this study was to assess the expression of SMAD4 in various gynecologic tumors. We selected primary gynecologic tumors comprising a spectrum of neoplasms showing mucinous differentiation. Few cases of metastatic tumors were also included. A total of 103 ca...

Borderline ovarian tumor in the pediatric and adolescent population: a clinopathologic analysis of fourteen cases.
This study was to probe into the clinicopathologic characteristics and prognosis in children and adolescents with BOT. A retrospective investigation was performed on 14 adolescents younger than age 21 years diagnosed with BOT. Clinical presentation, preoperative characteristics, surgery, tumor stage, histology, and recurrence were collected. The results showed that median age at diagnosis was 17.5 years, mostly after menarche. Abdominal mass/pain were the most common presenting symptoms. Median tumor size was 14 cm. Cancer antigen-125 (CA-125) in the blood serum was elevated by 41.67% (5/12), and CA-199 was elevated by 16....

Uncommon ovarian epithelial tumours
Epithelial ovarian tumours represent the most common type of ovarian tumour. Most of malignant cases represent high-grade serous, clear cell and endometrioid carcinomas; borderline serous and mucinous tumours of intestinal type are less common. This review focuses on the uncommon or rare epithelial tumours of the ovary which include borderline and malignant Brenner tumours, the recently-described mesonephric-like carcinoma of the ovary, and primary ovarian neuroendocrine tumours, with emphasis on helpful and diagnostic features.
