Age-Related Prevalence of Open Ductus Arteriosus in Full-Term Newborns
CONCLUSION: More than one-third of full-term neonates had an open ductus arteriosus on the first day of life, declining rapidly within the first week and stabilizing below 1% after day seven.PMID:37285834 | DOI:10.1159/000529842 (Source: Neonatology)

LGBTQIA+ Hospitalists Find Their Comfort Zones
Hospitalists who are part of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersex, asexual, and other (LGBTQIA+) community have had an array of experiences, both in medical school and professionally, related to their personal identity. While many see real progress and describe their workplace as welcoming, these same hospitalists have had previous struggles with fitting in. Some find themselves still fielding unusual comments from colleagues, which they dodge with humor or sincere curiosity. The Hospitalist recently spoke with five hospitalists who shared more about their challenges and opportunities as members of the ...

Safety and Feasibility of Skin-to-Skin Contact in the Delivery Room for High-Risk Cardiac Neonates
AbstractEarly skin-to-skin contact (SSC), beginning in the delivery room, provides myriad health benefits for mother and baby. Early SSC in the delivery room is the standard of care for healthy neonates following both vaginal and cesarean delivery. However, there is little published evidence on the safety of this practice in infants with congenital anomalies requiring immediate postnatal evaluation, including critical congenital heart disease (CCHD). Currently, the standard practice following delivery of infants with CCHD in many delivery centers has been immediate separation of mother and baby for neonatal stabilization a...

Medium-term Outcome of Prenatally Diagnosed Hypoplastic Left-Heart Syndrome and Impact of a Restrictive Atrial Septum Diagnosed in-utero
Conclusion: Medium-term outcomes of prenatally diagnosed HLHS have improved however it should be noted that almost 40% do not get to surgical palliation, which is vital to those doing fetal counselling. There remains significant mortality particularly in fetuses with in-utero diagnosed RAS. (Source: Mammalian Genome)

Safe and effective implantation and use of vagal nerve stimulation in new-onset refractory status epilepticus in early pregnancy: a case report
ConclusionNORSE is challenging to manage, further compounded in pregnancy due to the teratogenicity of ASMs and ASM polytherapy. This is the first case-study to report the safe implantation and use of VNS during the first trimester of pregnancy for the management of NORSE. (Source: Frontiers in Neurology)

Pregnancy in Women With Cerebral Palsy
Cureus. 2023 Mar 22;15(3):e36502. doi: 10.7759/cureus.36502. eCollection 2023 Mar.ABSTRACTCerebral palsy is a permanent, non-progressive, irreversible, non-curable condition with high co-morbidities and lifelong complications. Brain lesions may be present at birth or shortly after that. It may be congenital or acquired, prenatal, or abnormal brain development. The damage to the brain is non-progressive. It mainly affects movement, coordination, strength, and posture. Cerebral palsy is believed to increase women's chance of unfavorable pregnancy outcomes. According to studies, the main outcome of cerebral palsy in pregnant ...

Sotrovimab in Heart Transplant Recipients with Covid-19 in the Omicron Era: A National Transplant Center Experience
Early use of anti-SARS-CoV-2 monoclonal antibodies has shown to be a safe option to reduce hospitalization and death in solid organ transplant recipients with COVID-19. Real world data regarding sotrovimab in heart transplant (HT) recipients is scarce. We aim to describe our experience in terms of safety and outcomes in this group. The Impact Of Years Since Transplant On The Clinical Course After SARS-CoV-2 Infection In Heart Transplant Recipients
The risk of Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome - Coronavirus-2 (SARS-CoV-2) infection and mortality is higher in heart transplant (HT) recipients compared to immunocompetent individuals. The impact of years since transplant on clinical course risk is unknown. We evaluated the differences in clinical phenotypes and outcomes according to years since transplant in HT recipients with active SARS-CoV-2 infection. (Source: Journal of Cardiac Failure)

Congenital heart disease - A complex cardiac anomaly: A case report
J Family Med Prim Care. 2022 Dec;11(12):7946-7948. doi: 10.4103/jfmpc.jfmpc_556_22. Epub 2023 Jan 17.ABSTRACTCongenital heart disorders (CHDs) are a major cause of juvenile morbidity and mortality in many poor nations, owing to late detection and a lack of talent and facilities for decisive treatments. A case of a newborn baby with atrial septal defect (ASD) with patent ductus arteriosus (PDA), tricuspid atresia (TA), and pulmonary valve stenosis is admitted to the pediatric ward. It is a complex cardiac anomaly that leads to mortality and morbidity. We rarely get to see a baby dealing with four major complex heart conditi...

In vitro fertilization: an unexpected finding in a cohort of patients with biliary atresia
This report presents the clinical picture, treatment strategies, and outcomes of BA patients with no previous treatment. A retrospective cohort study (Jan/2001 to Jan/2021) was conducted to evaluate the outcome of patients with BA referred to a single team. Study groups were: 1) Kasai-only group (K-only) n=9), 2) LT-only group (n=7), and 3) Kasai+LT group (K+LT) (n=23). Survival with native liver and overall survival were 22.9 and 94.8%, respectively, at 120 months of follow-up. There was no difference in age at KPE in the K-only group (46.8±21.8 days) vs K+LT (52.1±22 days), P=0.4. Ten (25.6%) patients were babies conce...
