Stewardship for Science and Vaccines
Despite the success of vaccines in the modern world, including the rapid development of the COVID-19 vaccine, my state is now experiencing a large measles outbreak and a decline in immunization rates. At the turn of the century, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention published “Ten Great Public Health Achievements” of the twentieth century in the United States.1 Vaccination topped the list, a national and global success story. Other achievements included improvements in motor-vehicle safety, control of infectious diseases, safer workplaces, decline in deaths from coro nary heart disease and stroke, safer and he...

Sensors, Vol. 23, Pages 2411: Wearable Sensors for the Monitoring of Maternal Health & mdash;A Systematic Review
This study presents a systematic review of these analyses. Twelve scientific articles were reviewed to address three research questions oriented to (1) sensors and method of data acquisition; (2) processing methods of the acquired data; and (3) detection of the activities or movements of the fetus or the mother. Based on these findings, we discuss how sensors can help effectively monitor maternal and fetal health during pregnancy. We have observed that most of the wearable sensors were used in a controlled environment. These sensors need more testing in free-living conditions and to be employed for continuous monitoring be...

Creative Concepts: Tiny Pacemakers for Tiny Babies
Standard pacemakers are not specifically designed for implantation in small neonates. Pediatric patients comprise only 1-2% of the total pacemaker market, and that includes infants, children and adolescents, with only a tiny fraction being neonatal pacemaker implants. The typical transvenous approach is limited by patient size and venous capacitance, with concerns for long-term vascular patency and acceptable lead slack to allow continued functionality with patient somatic growth.1 Pacemaker generator sizes have decreased over the years but are still relatively large compared to the small size of a neonate, increasing the ...

Clinical Evaluation of a Wireless Device for Monitoring Vitals in Newborn Babies
ConclusionThe NR was able to seamlessly monitor vital parameters in neonates without any safety concern. The device showed a good level of agreement for heart rate and oxygen saturation among the four parameters measured. (Source: Indian Journal of Pediatrics)

Therapeutic hypothermia for neonates with sudden unexpected postnatal collapse
Scenario A 36-week gestation infant was delivered vaginally to a primipara with uncomplicated antenatal period. The baby was well following delivery and was admitted to the postnatal ward with the mother. At 2 hours of life, a registered nurse attended the mother and baby for routine care and found the newborn on mother’s chest, in the skin-to-skin position, with no spontaneous respiration. The baby was bradycardic and required full resuscitation including intubation and cardiac massage. The heart rate normalised but respiratory effort remained poor and ongoing ventilation was required. She was noted to be encephalop...

The Value of Perinatal Palliative Care for Infants with Trisomy 18 and Congenital Heart Disease (SA310B)
Outcomes:1. Understand the importance of prenatal conversations with families expecting a baby with Trisomy 18 and congenital heart disease in helping develop a plan that aligns with the family's goals2. Describe the benefits of perinatal palliative care for patients with Trisomy 18 and congenital heart diseaseFrom 2016 –1022, a total of 59 infant with confirmed Trisomy 18 were cared for by members of Fort Worth Neonatology. Of the 59 infants, 49 met with a perinatal palliative care (PPC) consultant during the pregnancy. (Source: Journal of Pain and Symptom Management)

Correlation of Serum Lactate Levels, Perfusion Index and Plethysmography Variability Index With Invasive Blood Pressure in Late Preterm and Term Infants With Shock
CONCLUSION: PI has moderate positive correlation while SL and PVI have moderate negative correlation with invasive blood pressure. The cutoff values of SL ≥4.65, PI <0.45 and PVI ≥23.5 can predict invasive hypotension with good sensitivity and negative predictive value.PMID:36756997 (Source: Indian Pediatrics)
