Renal Biopsy in Children —Effect on Treatment Decisions: A Single-Center Experience
AbstractRenal biopsy is an important diagnostic tool, though invasive and carries risks involved with sedation. The authors wanted to compare suspect histopathological diagnosis with final diagnosis and find out impact of biopsy findings on treatment. They retrospectively analyzed 108 patients. Details of patients, diagnosis, treatment and complications due to kidney biopsy were documented. Statistical analysis was done using SPSS version 20.0 (IBM, NY). Indications of 108 children (69 boys, 39 girls) undergoing renal biopsy were steroid-resistant nephrotic syndrome (35.1%), steroid-dependent nephrotic syndrome requiring c...

Autoantibody Profile of Children with Juvenile Dermatomyositis
ConclusionEight patients tested positive for at least one MSA or MAA. The prevalence of autoantibodies was low. Positivity for anti-SRP, anti-MDA-5, anti-Mi-2 and anti-SSA/Ro52 antibodies was seen in 4, 3, 1 and 1 patients, respectively. Ethnic differences and testing for autoantibodies during/after therapy could be responsible for the low positivity rate for autoantibodies. (Source: Indian Journal of Pediatrics)

Pituitary Volume and Iron Overload Evaluation by 3T MRI in Thalassemia
AbstractObjectiveTo evaluate pituitary volume and iron overload in beta thalassemia major, with the objective of assessing the reliability of this method in predicting hypogonadism.Methods3T MRI was used to measure pituitary R2 and T2* in 57 beta thalassemia major patients and 30 controls. Anterior pituitary volume was evaluated by MRI planimetry. Cardiac, hepatic, and pancreatic iron overload were also assessed using MRI T2*. Mean serum ferritin was estimated by sandwich immuno-assay. Short stature was defined as height

Clinical and Laboratory Parameters Associated with Septic Myocardial Dysfunction in Children with Septic Shock
AbstractThe authors ’ objective was to determine the association of clinical and laboratory parameters at admission with septic myocardial dysfunction (SMD) in children with septic shock. A chart review of children aged 3 mo–17 y with fluid refractory septic shock who underwent echocardiography within 3 h of admis sion was undertaken (2015–2017). Univariate followed by multivariate analysis was performed to identify factors associated with SMD. Of the 95 children fulfilling the inclusion criteria, SMD was diagnosed in 44 (46%) children. Children ‘with SMD’ had longer capillary refill time...
