Serum ADAMTS-9 Level in Newborn Babies with Congenital Heart Disease
Conclusion In conclusion, it was found that the serum ADAMTS-9 levels were significantly higher in newborns with CHD than in healthy newborns. In parallel, ADAMTS-9 levels above a certain cut-off value were associated with CHD. Ambitious observatory to probe universe ’s most powerful particle accelerators
Along with the gentle light of stars and galaxies, Earth receives much rarer and more aggressive signals from the cosmos: photons that slam into the atmosphere with 10 trillion times the energy of visible light. Just how they reach such enormous energies is a puzzle, but a group of mostly European countries will soon start to build an observatory that will trace them to their sources by watching for the flash of their atmospheric impacts. By 2026, if all goes well, the €330 million Cherenkov Telescope Array Observatory (CTAO) should be pinpointing the cosmic powerhouses that spawn the photons and probing their inner work...

‘Don't throw the baby out with the bathwater’ - Urine galectin-3 in heart failure with chronic kidney disease, another tool to distinguish intrinsic kidney disease versus chronic, functional cardiorenal syndrome?
The burden of kidney disease in heart failure (HF) is well described, while a comprehensive, integrated understanding of the underlying complex mechanisms and clinical implications of these cardiorenal interactions has remained elusive. We have made significant advances in understanding acute cardiorenal syndrome in the setting of acute HF (AHF). We now know that changes in kidney function during treatment of congestion are often benign hemodynamic fluctuations resulting from diuresis or medical therapy. (Source: Journal of Cardiac Failure)

MRSA Nasal PCR ’ s Role in Empiric Antibiotic Selection
Case A 67-year-old man with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) was admitted to inpatient general medicine from his nursing home for pneumonia. He reported a 10-day history of an upper respiratory viral infection with symptoms improving until two days ago. Initial evaluation revealed a temperature of 100.5° F, heart rate of 95 beats per minute, blood pressure of 147/89 mmHg, respiratory rate of 25 per minute, and O2 saturation of 92% on room air. His white blood cell count was 14,000. Both a COVID-19 and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) nasal polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assay were negative. ...

The use of selexipag, a prostacyclin receptor analog, for treatment of severe pulmonary artery hypertension during pregnancy, a case report
We describe the use of selexipag, an oral prostacyclin receptor agonist, for treating severe PAH during pregnancy in a patient who refused IV prostacyclin therapy. She remained stable throughout pregnancy and delivered a healthy baby girl; however, she died 13 days after her delivery by cesarean section due to developing worsening heart failure. While there is data and support for IV prostacyclins in pregnancy, patients may opt for oral formulations, like in our case. Registry data on the use of oral prostacyclins and prostacyclin receptor agonists in pregnancy may help improve patient outcomes.PMID:37521130 | PMC:PMC10374...

The Kids Heart BioBank —Supporting Patient Care and Research Into Congenital Heart Disease
Congenital heart disease (CHD) is the most common birth defect affecting ∼3,000 babies in Australia each year. The cause of most CHD is unknown and attributed to a combination of genetic and environmental factors. In 2003, the Kids Heart BioBank (KHB) was established at the Heart Centre for Children, to accelerate genetic research into CHD. (Source: Heart, Lung and Circulation)

Sociodemographic and Clinical Characteristics Associated With Improved Awareness of Cardiovascular Disease Risk in Women With Past Pregnancy Complications
Women with past pregnancy complications of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM), hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP) and/or having small for gestational age (SGA) babies have increased risk for cardiovascular disease (CVD). We investigated women ’s awareness of their CVD risk after a Women’s Heart Clinic (WHC) and variables associated with higher CVD risk awareness. (Source: Heart, Lung and Circulation)

Women ’s Heart Clinics to Prevent Cardiovascular Disease in Women With Pregnancy-related Risk Factors: A Prospective Study
Hypertensive disorders of pregnancy (HDP), gestational diabetes (GDM), and having a small for gestational age (SGA) baby increase a woman ’s risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD). Despite this, evidence for models of care that mitigate CVD risk is lacking. (Source: Heart, Lung and Circulation)

Medium-term Outcome of Prenatally Diagnosed Hypoplastic Left-Heart Syndrome and Impact of a Restrictive Atrial Septum Diagnosed in-utero
Conclusion: Medium-term outcomes of prenatally diagnosed HLHS have improved however it should be noted that almost 40% do not get to surgical palliation, which is vital to those doing fetal counselling. There remains significant mortality particularly in fetuses with in-utero diagnosed RAS. (Source: Pediatric Cardiology)

Virtually Delivered Psychosocial Intervention for Prenatally Diagnosed Congenital Heart Disease: Feasibility and Acceptability of HEARTPrep
This study evaluated the feasibility and acceptability of HEARTPrep. Participants were mothers receiving cardiology care for a fetal CHD diagnosis. Partners could participate with the mother. HEARTPrep was delivered through a mobile app and telehealth. Feasibility was assessed through enrollment/retention rates. Acceptability was assessed through 20 Likert-scale and five open-ended questions. Of 39 recruited mothers, 35 (90%) enrolled. Half of partners (48%) also participated. Twenty-seven of 35 enrolled mothers (77%) completed HEARTPrep. On a scale from 0 (Not at All) to 4 (Very), mean item acceptability scores ranged fro...

Integration of services for children
The year 2022 saw the establishment of Integrated Care Systems (ICSs) in England. According to the Health Foundation,1 ICSs are the centrepiece of the biggest legislative overhaul of the National Health Service in a decade. The aim is to bring together general practice, hospitals and local authorities. Local ICS initiatives will be developed by place-based partnerships.2 ICSs must say how they will address the needs of children and young people in their 5-year plans, with local consultation and the involvement of children and families. The National Children’s Bureau concluded that ‘taken together, we believe th...
