In vitro fertilization: an unexpected finding in a cohort of patients with biliary atresia
This report presents the clinical picture, treatment strategies, and outcomes of BA patients with no previous treatment. A retrospective cohort study (Jan/2001 to Jan/2021) was conducted to evaluate the outcome of patients with BA referred to a single team. Study groups were: 1) Kasai-only group (K-only) n=9), 2) LT-only group (n=7), and 3) Kasai+LT group (K+LT) (n=23). Survival with native liver and overall survival were 22.9 and 94.8%, respectively, at 120 months of follow-up. There was no difference in age at KPE in the K-only group (46.8±21.8 days) vs K+LT (52.1±22 days), P=0.4. Ten (25.6%) patients were babies conce...

Earliest galaxies challenge ideas about star birth in infant universe
Charlotte Mason, an astrophysicist at the University of Copenhagen, had modest expectations 9 months ago, when she and her collaborators began to use JWST, the giant new space telescope, to look back in time for the universe’s first galaxies . Modeling suggested the patch of sky they were examining would hold just 0.2 galaxies—none, in other words, unless they got lucky. Yet out of the images popped not one, but two bright galaxies. “That was the biggest surprise to me,” she says. The surprises have kept coming. JWST astronomers have found more than 15 galaxies shining within the first half-bil...

Effects of fentanyl and sucrose on pain in retinopathy examinations with pain scale, near-infrared spectroscopy, and ultrasonography: a randomized trial
CONCLUSIONS: Intravenous and intranasal fentanyl and oral sucrose were not superior to each other in preventing pain during the examination for retinopathy of prematurity (ROP). Sucrose may be a good alternative for pain control during ROP examination. Our findings suggest that ROP exam may not affect cerebral oxygenation or cerebral blood flow. Larger scale studies are needed to determine the best pharmacological option to reduce pain during ROP exams and evaluate the effects of this procedure on cerebral oxygenation and blood flow.PMID:36976515 | DOI:10.1007/s12519-023-00705-x (Source: World Journal of Pediatrics : WJP)

Safety and Feasibility of Skin-to-Skin Contact in the Delivery Room for High-Risk Cardiac Neonates
AbstractEarly skin-to-skin contact (SSC), beginning in the delivery room, provides myriad health benefits for mother and baby. Early SSC in the delivery room is the standard of care for healthy neonates following both vaginal and cesarean delivery. However, there is little published evidence on the safety of this practice in infants with congenital anomalies requiring immediate postnatal evaluation, including critical congenital heart disease (CCHD). Currently, the standard practice following delivery of infants with CCHD in many delivery centers has been immediate separation of mother and baby for neonatal stabilization a...
