NIH Glycobiology Special Topics Seminar: Introduction to glycan structures, nomenclature, and glycosylation pathways
This special topics lecture series will provide an overview of the fundamental facts, concepts, and methods concerning glycosylation with an emphasis on aspects relevant to human health and disease. Glycosylation mediates a wide variety of cellular functions and all multicellular organisms utilize glycans as biosignals in normal physiology. Most mammalian proteins contain sugar chains (referred to as glycans). These glycoproteins are formed as secondary gene products by the concerted action o f glycosyltransferases, glycosidases, and high-energy sugar nucleotides. Therefore, the biosynthesis of glycans is not controlled ...

Health Disparities and SARS-CoV-2: Structures and Social Determinants
COVID-19 Scientific Interest Group Dr. Jefferson, a former NIAID fellow, is an assistant professor in the Division of Allergy and Immunology, Department of Pediatrics, University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine. An allergist-immunologist, she also sees patients at Arkansas Children ’ s Hospital. Since the first U.S. laboratory confirmed case of COVID-19 was documented by the CDC on January 22, 2020, there have been over 31 million confirmed cases of COVID-19, and 560,000 deaths. Black people account for 14.90f all COVID-19 deaths (down from 22 0n fall 2020), and overall Black, Latin, and Indigenous c...

Lasker Scholar lecture: Cell Therapy for Epithelial Cancers
Lasker Scholar lecture Cell therapy is an emerging treatment modality that is highly effective in hematological cancers. Research by Dr. Hinrichs ’ s team has demonstrated the potential to extend cell therapy to the treatment of common epithelial cancers. Treatment of patients with human papillomavirus (HPV)-associated cancers with tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes showed durable, complete tumor responses, apparently curing some patients with metastatic cancer. A more “ off the shelf ” approach with peripheral blood T cells genetically engineered to target the HPV E7 antigen also demonstrated robust clinical activity wi...

Understanding the Effects of Inflammation over time in Humans: Lessons from Psoriasis
Inflammation is critical to atherosclerosis initiation, progression and complications. The goal of The Laboratory of Inflammation and Cardiometabolic Diseases at the NHLBI Intramural Program is to understand how chronic systemic inflammation drives development of cardiometabolic diseases in humans. For the past decade, Dr. Mehta ’ s research program has utilized psoriasis, a chronic inflammatory skin disease, as a model to probe inflammatory, lipid and metabolic pathways associated with atherosclerosis progression. In 2012, Dr. Mehta founded the Psoriasis Atherosclerosis Cardiometabolic Initiative (PACI) at the NHLBI Int...

Demystifying Medicine - Viruses and Immunodeficiency and Skin Microbiome
Demystifying Medicine Lecture Series How do virus and other pathogens penetrate the fortress that is human skin? What tricks do they use to slip past the guards? How do they compromise the immune system, and how do they take advantage of and reveal inherited immunodeficiency? These are the topics of the next Demystifying Medicine. Philip Murphy, M.D., is chief of the NIAID Laboratory of Molecular Immunology and its Molecular Signaling Section. His laboratory studies G protein-coupled receptors of the immune system with the goal of elucidating mechanisms by which the receptors relay chemotactic signals to cells and identify...

COVID 19 Vaccine Development
My laboratory focuses on studying the immunology and virology of HIV-1 infection and developing novel vaccine strategies. I have also recently demonstrated the therapeutic efficacy of potent monoclonal antibodies and the early seeding of the viral reservoir. My laboratory received three NIH U19 Integrated Preclinical/Clinical AIDS Vaccine Development (IPCAVD) program grants in 2005, 2008, and 2012 to construct alternative serotype adenovirus vaccine vectors, to explore their immunogenicity and protective efficacy in rhesus monkeys, and to advance optimal vaccine candidates into clinical trials. Four phase 1 clinical trials...
