Severe adenovirus infection outbreak in Colombia: Experience from a tertiary pediatric hospital in 2022
Conclusion. In 2022, there was an outbreak of severe adenovirus infections, affecting mainly children under five years of age, with higher-than-usual mortality.PMID:38648343 | DOI:10.7705/biomedica.7047 (Source: Biomedica : Revista del Instituto Nacional de Salud)

Impact of the coronavirus disease 2019 pandemic on the incidence of other infectious diseases in the hematology hospital in Korea
CONCLUSIONS: The implementation of COVID-19 infection control measures reduced the incidence of cRV infection. However, CDI increased significantly and incidence rates of CPE and VRE remained unchanged in hematological patients after the pandemic. Infection control measures suitable for each type of HCAI, such as stringent hand washing for CDI and enough isolation capacities, should be implemented and maintained in future pandemics, especially in immunocompromised patients.PMID:38649159 | DOI:10.3904/kjim.2023.508 (Source: The Korean Journal of Internal Medicine)

Characterization and optimization of exopolysaccharide extracted from a newly isolated halotolerant cyanobacterium, Acaryochloris Al-Azhar MNE ON864448.1 with antiviral activity
This study aimed to identify and optimize the conditions for exopolysaccharide (EPS) production from a newly isolated cyanobacterium, Acaryochloris Al-Azhar MNE ON864448.1, besides exploring its antiviral activity. The cyanobacterial EPS was purified through DEAE-52 cellulose column with a final yield of 83.75%. Different analysis instruments were applied for EPS identification, including Fourier-transform infrared (FT-IR) spectroscopy, thermogravimetric analysis (TGA), and gas chromatographic-mass spectrometry (GC-MS). Plackett-Burman's design demonstrated that working volume (X1), EDTA (X2), inoculum size (X3), CaCl2 (X4...

Efficacy and Safety of Recombinant Human p53 Adenovirus Injection Combined with Radiotherapy or Concurrent Chemoradiotherapy in the Treatment of Cervical Cancer: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis
CONCLUSIONS: The combination of rAd-p53 with radiotherapy or concurrent chemoradiotherapy exhibits enhanced therapeutic efficacy in the treatment of cervical cancer without a significant increase in severe adverse reactions. However, multicenter, large-scale, randomized clinical trials are warranted for further validation.PMID:38639607 (Source: Alternative Therapies in Health and Medicine)

Activation of Wnt signaling mitigates blood-brain barrier disruption by inhibiting vesicular transcytosis after traumatic brain injury in mice
This study aims to elucidate the impact of Wnt/β-catenin signaling on cerebrovascular vesicular transcytosis following TBI. In this experiment, adult male wild-type (WT) C57BL/6 mice underwent various interventions. TBI was induced utilizing the controlled cortical impact technique. Post-TBI, mice were administered either an inhibitor or an agonist of Wnt signaling via intraperitoneal injection. Recombinant adeno-associated virus (rAAV) was administered intracerebroventricularly to modulate the expression of the CAV-1 inhibitory protein, Major facilitator superfamily domain-containing 2a (Mfsd2a). This research utilized E...
