Experiences of oral pre-exposure prophylaxis use among heterosexual men accessing sexual and reproductive health services in South Africa: a qualitative study
CONCLUSIONS: Our study reports on the experiences of heterosexual men accessing oral PrEP in real-world settings and contributes to the limited literature among this population. We highlight multiple levels which could be strengthened to improve men's PrEP use, including individual support, education among partners and communities, and addressing health system barriers to access.PMID:38695102 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26249 (Source: Journal of the International AIDS Society)

Urine tenofovir testing for real-time PrEP adherence feedback: a qualitative study involving transgender women in Uganda
CONCLUSIONS: Incorporating POC urine testing into routine PrEP adherence counselling was acceptable and potentially beneficial for TGW but required attention to context. Additional research is needed to identify effective strategies for optimizing adherence monitoring and counselling for this population.PMID:38695107 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26255 (Source: Journal of the International AIDS Society)

Population impacts of conditional financial incentives and a male-targeted digital decision support application on the HIV treatment cascade in rural KwaZulu Natal: findings from the HITS cluster randomized clinical trial
CONCLUSIONS: Small CFIs can contribute to achieve the first step of the HIV care cascade. However, neither CFIs nor EPIC-HIV was sufficient to increase the number of people on ART. Additional evidence is needed to confirm the impact of EPIC-HIV on viral suppression.PMID:38695099 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26248 (Source: Journal of the International AIDS Society)

Exploring adolescent girls and young women's PrEP-user profiles: qualitative insights into differentiated PrEP delivery platform selection and engagement in Cape Town, South Africa
CONCLUSIONS: Market segmentation of AGYW characterizes different types of PrEP-users and has the potential to enhance tailored messaging and campaigns to reach specific segments, with the aim of improving sustained PrEP use and HIV prevention benefits.PMID:38695101 | DOI:10.1002/jia2.26254 (Source: Journal of the International AIDS Society)

Iron deficiency and all-cause mortality after myocardial infarction
CONCLUSION: Iron deficiency is common among patients with the first MI. The PragueID criteria based on iron and soluble transferrin receptor levels provide the best prediction of mortality and should be evaluated in future interventional studies for the identification of patients potentially benefiting from intravenous iron therapy.PMID:38697863 | DOI:10.1016/j.ejim.2024.04.020 (Source: Molecular Medicine)

The importance of the development of extracorporeal life support simulation centres for improving skills and knowledge during the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: The development of a simulation-based education centre was found to be an invaluable achievement that enabled not only successful standardised training and testing of novel or previously accepted procedures, but also the upgrading of technical skills, even in the challenging COVID-19 pandemic period.PMID:38693985 | PMC:PMC11059022 | DOI:10.5114/kitp.2024.138522 (Source: Polish Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery)

Neighborhood physical environments and change in cardiometabolic risk factors over 14 years in the study of Women's health across the nation
CONCLUSION: Neighborhood walkability may have a meaningful influence on trajectories of blood pressure outcomes in women from midlife to early older adulthood, suggesting the need to better understand how individuals interact with their neighborhood environments in pursuit of cardiometabolic health.PMID:38696876 | DOI:10.1016/j.healthplace.2024.103257 (Source: Health and Place)

Transport accessibility and hospital attributes: A nonlinear analysis of their impact on Women's prenatal care seeking behavior
This study, based on a substantial Wuhan dataset (23,947 samples), investigates factors influencing prenatal care-seeking, focusing on transport accessibility and hospital attributes. Findings indicate a nuanced relationship: (1) A non-linear trend, resembling an inverted "U," reveals the complex interplay between transport accessibility, hospital attributes, and prenatal care visits. Hospital attributes have a more pronounced impact than transport accessibility. (2) Interaction analysis underscores that lower prenatal care visits relate to low-income and education levels, despite reasonable public transport accessibility....

Global climate change: Effects of future temperatures on emergency department visits for mental disorders in Beijing, China
Environ Res. 2024 Apr 30:119044. doi: 10.1016/j.envres.2024.119044. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRising temperatures can increase the risk of mental disorders. As climate change intensifies, the future disease burden due to mental disorders may be underestimated. Using data on the number of daily emergency department visits for mental disorders at 30 hospitals in Beijing, China during 2016-2018, the relationship between daily mean temperature and such visits was assessed using a quasi-Poisson model integrated with a distributed lag nonlinear model. Emergency department visits for mental disorders attributed to temperature...

Cigarette Smoking Among Pregnant Women During the Perinatal Period: Prevalence and Health Care Provider Inquiries - Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System, United States, 2021
MMWR Morb Mortal Wkly Rep. 2024 May 2;73(17):393-398. doi: 10.15585/mmwr.mm7317a2.ABSTRACTCigarette smoking during pregnancy increases the risk for pregnancy complications and adverse infant outcomes such as preterm delivery, restricted fetal growth, and infant death. Health care provider counseling can support smoking cessation. Data from the 2021 Pregnancy Risk Assessment Monitoring System were analyzed to estimate the prevalence of smoking before, during, and after pregnancy; quitting smoking during pregnancy; and whether health care providers asked about cigarette smoking before, during, and after pregnancy among women...

Concentrations, Sources, and Health Risk of Heavy Metals in Edible Parts of Broilers from Northeast of Algeria
This study aimed to determine the concentration of mercury (Hg), lead (Pb), and iron (Fe) in the edible parts of broilers, as well as in feed, drinking water, and litter as sources of contamination and to assess their possible human health risk in the province of Jijel (Northeast Algeria). The range of Hg, Pb, and Fe in edible parts were 0.004-0.007, 0.185-0.480, and 28.536-88.306 mg/kg, respectively, and the difference in content was only significant (p < 0.05) for lead. Breast and thigh samples had Pb concentrations above the maximum limit. Spearman coefficient analysis revealed that most correlations were positive be...

Deciphering the Pharmacological Mechanisms of Wen-Jing-Zhi-Tong Decoction in Treating Primary Dysmenorrhea by UPLC-Q-ExactiveOrbitrap-MS/MS with GC-MS and Network Pharmacology
CONCLUSION: This study provides the first comprehensive analysis of the key compounds, targets, and pathways of WJZTD, laying a solid foundation for future pharmacological studies on PDM. The anti-nociceptive and anti-inflammatory effect may be attributed to the downregulation of the BDNF/TrkB/ERK/CREB signaling pathway.PMID:38693741 | DOI:10.2174/0113862073308798240425115006 (Source: Combinatorial Chemistry and High Throughput Screening)
