Assessing the impact of lubricant on liquid-based Pap smear test outcomes: a randomized clinical trial
CONCLUSION: The use of lubricant gel in patients can reduce pain in patients during examination and testing, but does not affect the cytological and pathological results of patients.PMID:38694378 | PMC:PMC11060314 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001803 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Genetic and inflammatory factors underlying gestational diabetes mellitus: a review
Front Endocrinol (Lausanne). 2024 Apr 17;15:1399694. doi: 10.3389/fendo.2024.1399694. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTGestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) poses a significant global health concern, impacting both maternal and fetal well-being. Early detection and treatment are imperative to mitigate adverse outcomes during pregnancy. This review delves into the pivotal role of insulin function and the influence of genetic variants, including SLC30A8, CDKAL1, TCF7L2, IRS1, and GCK, in GDM development. These genetic variations affect beta-cell function and insulin activity in crucial tissues, such as muscle, disrupting glucose regul...

Baseline characteristics and outcome of stroke patients after endovascular therapy according to previous symptomatic vascular disease and sex
CONCLUSIONS: Previous vascular events increased the risk of in-hospital complications and poorer outcome in the analyzed patients with EVT-eligible LVO-AIS. Our findings may support risk assessment in these stroke patients and could contribute to the design of future studies.PMID:38694775 | PMC:PMC11061446 | DOI:10.3389/fneur.2024.1293905 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Systematic Review of Survival Outcomes of Pregnancy-Associated Breast Cancer in Asian Countries
We reported study design, year of diagnosis, country, definition of PABC, control group, age of participants, median follow-up time, survival outcomes and pregnancy as prognostic factors. Only five studies reported that PABC patients had a poor overall or disease-free survival rate compared to the control. Pregnancy was a significant independent prognostic factor of breast cancer in only two studies. This review highlights that pregnancy has an unconfirmed association with breast cancer survival in Asia. Most studies that found a non-significant association had small samples, thus there is a need for large-scale multinatio...

Pre-Treatment Knowledge and Side-Effects Experienced during Chemotherapy for Breast Cancer in a Nigerian Tertiary Hospital
CONCLUSION: Majority of the patients were aware of the side effects of chemotherapy. Having knowledge about side effects was associated with faster recovery. Pre-Chemotherapy counselling should be done routinely for patients starting on chemotherapy.PMID:38694219 | PMC:PMC11058440 | DOI:10.60787/NMJ-62-4-37 (Source: Cancer Control)

Early-pregnancy sex steroid and thyroid function hormones, thyroid autoimmunity, and maternal papillary thyroid cancer incidence in the Finnish Maternity Cohort
Int J Cancer. 2024 May 2. doi: 10.1002/ijc.34974. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThyroid cancer more commonly affects women than men and is the third most frequently diagnosed cancer among women of reproductive age. We conducted a nested case-control study within the Finnish Maternity Cohort to evaluate pre-diagnostic sex steroid and thyroid function markers in relation to subsequent maternal papillary thyroid cancer. Cases (n = 605) were women ages 18-44 years, who provided an early-pregnancy (<20 weeks gestation) blood sample and were diagnosed with papillary thyroid cancer up to 11 years afterward. Controls (n = 1185)...

Trend Analysis of Lung Cancer Mortality and Years of Life Lost (YLL) in South of Iran, 2004-2019
CONCLUSION: The mortality rate and YLL due to lung cancer in Fars Province is increasing, although the standardized mortality has a constant trend. Tobacco control is the most effective and least expensive way to reduce the number of lung cancer patients worldwide. National and local media can also play an important role in informing people about the risk factors.PMID:38694860 | PMC:PMC11058385 | DOI:10.18502/ijph.v53i1.14700 (Source: Cancer Control)

Prescription retinoid and contraception use in women in Australia: A population-based study
CONCLUSIONS: Rates of oral retinoid dispensing have doubled among reproductive-aged women over the past decade. A large percentage of oral retinoid use does not appear to have concomitant contraception use, posing a risk of teratogenic effects in pregnancies.PMID:38693687 | DOI:10.1111/ajd.14294 (Source: The Australasian Journal of Dermatology)

The importance of the development of extracorporeal life support simulation centres for improving skills and knowledge during the COVID-19 pandemic
CONCLUSIONS: The development of a simulation-based education centre was found to be an invaluable achievement that enabled not only successful standardised training and testing of novel or previously accepted procedures, but also the upgrading of technical skills, even in the challenging COVID-19 pandemic period.PMID:38693985 | PMC:PMC11059022 | DOI:10.5114/kitp.2024.138522 (Source: Polish Journal of Cardio-Thoracic Surgery)

A new bicornuate model of rat uterus transplantation
ConclusionsOur novel bicornuate rat uterus transplantation model provides a distinctive opportunity for sequential biopsies at various intervals after transplantation and, therefore, comprehensive monitoring of graft health, viability, and identification of potential signs of rejection. Furthermore, this model allows for different interventions in each horn for comparative studies without interobserver differences contrary to the established unicornuate model. By closely replicating the clinical setting, this model stands as a valuable tool for ongoing research in the field of uterus transplantation, promoting further inno...

The Impact on Birth Outcomes of Sonographic Fetal Weight Estimation in Neonatal Macrosomia
Conclusion Larger EFW increased CD risk among pregnancies with actual neonatal macrosomia. Antenatally suspected macrosomia might alter labor management due to concerns for potential complications, especially when associated with primiparity, diabetes mellitus, or maternal obesity. The increase in the CD rate did not show an association with improved maternal and neonatal outcomes. A novel preclinical model of the normal human breast
AbstractImproved screening and treatment have decreased breast cancer mortality, although incidence continues to rise. Women at increased risk of breast cancer can be offered risk reducing treatments, such as tamoxifen, but this has not been shown to reduce breast cancer mortality. New, more efficacious, risk-reducing agents are needed. The identification of novel candidates for prevention is hampered by a lack of good preclinical models. Current patient derived in vitro and in vivo models cannot fully recapitulate the complexities of the human tissue, lacking human extracellular matrix, stroma, and immune cells, all of wh...
