Use of complementary medicine and its association with SARS-CoV-2 vaccination during the COVID-19 pandemic: a longitudinal cohort study
CONCLUSION: While complementary medicine is increasingly used, it is rarely discussed with primary care physicians. Complementary medicine use, especially for COVID-19 prevention, is associated with COVID-19 vaccination status. Communication between physicians, patients, and complementary medicine therapists is encouraged to facilitate a truly holistic approach to making a shared decision based on the best available information.PMID:38579302 | DOI:10.57187/s.3505 (Source: Swiss Medical Weekly)

Vitamin D receptor gene BsmI (rs1544410) polymorphism: role in multiple sclerosis and genotype-phenotype correlations
CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest potential genotype-phenotype correlations for the rs1544410 VDR gene polymorphism in the disease course of MS. Future research on a larger scale is needed to confirm these findings.PMID:38578462 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09369-w (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

Protective Role of Vitamin D Against Development of Active Tuberculosis in Close Household Contacts of Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients: A Prospective Cohort Study
Indian J Clin Biochem. 2024 Apr;39(2):248-256. doi: 10.1007/s12291-022-01110-3. Epub 2023 Jan 12.ABSTRACTVitamin-D is known to promote innate immune responses by acting as a cofactor of VDR for induction of antimicrobial peptides like cathelicidin. Close household contacts of pulmonary tuberculosis patients are at high risk of active infection, Therefore, possible role of vitamin-D in TB prevention through cathelicidin production was studied in high-risk household contacts (HHCs) of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients. 20 HHCs of PTB patients were recruited and followed up for one year. Levels of vitamin-D (25(OH)D) and ...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1636: Comparative Performance Assessment of Novel Fluorescence Immunoassay POCTs for Measuring Circulating Levels of Vitamin-D
onio D’Avolio Vitamin D (Vit D) is a fat-soluble molecule acting like a hormone, and it is involved in several biological mechanisms such as gene expression, calcium homeostasis, bone metabolism, immune modulation, viral protection, and neuromuscular functions. Vit D deficiency can lead to chronic hypocalcemia, hyperparathyroidism, and many other pathological conditions; in this context, low and very low levels of 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25-OH-D) were found to be associated with an increased risk of COVID-19 infection and the likelihood of many severe diseases. For all these reasons, it is important to quantify and mon...

Quality of life in patients with hypoparathyroidism receiving standard treatment: an updated systematic review
ConclusionPatients with hypoparathyroidism receiving standard treatment report impairments in quality of life. The reasons for these impairments are probably multifaceted, making regular monitoring and the inclusion of various professionals necessary. (Source: Endocrine)

Supplementation with vitamin D improves the embryo quality in in vitro fertilization (IVF) programs, independently of the patients ’ basal vitamin D status
ConclusionSupplementation of VD in patients undergoing ICSI procedures significantly improved the number of top-quality embryos compared with the control group, either starting from VD normal baseline values or starting from low values.Trial registration number07/2018. The Effects of an Eight-Week Swimming Program on Body Composition and Assessment of Dietary Intake in Post-COVID-19 Patients
J Nutr Metab. 2024 Mar 27;2024:3037784. doi: 10.1155/2024/3037784. eCollection 2024.ABSTRACTCOVID-19 infection and its consequences (long-term COVID-19 syndrome) have implications for weight loss, body composition, and diet quality. In the context of the "PostCovSwim" project, which is part of a broader international study, the impact of an eight-week swimming program on post-COVID-19 patients' nutritional status (i.e., body composition and dietary intake) was evaluated. Body composition and dietary intake were assessed by medically approved and calibrated bioelectrical impedance (Tanita 780 S MA) and food frequency questi...

Vitamin D status, vitamin D receptor polymorphisms, and risk of type 2 diabetes: A prospective cohort study
CONCLUSIONS: Higher serum 25(OH)D concentrations were associated with lower T2D risk across the glycemic spectrum below the threshold for diabetes, and the relations in prediabetes were modified by VDR polymorphisms. Improving lipid profile, mainly triglycerides, accounted for part of the favorable associations.PMID:38571313 | DOI:10.1210/clinem/dgae221 (Source: The Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism)
