Vitamin D receptor gene BsmI (rs1544410) polymorphism: role in multiple sclerosis and genotype-phenotype correlations
CONCLUSIONS: Our results suggest potential genotype-phenotype correlations for the rs1544410 VDR gene polymorphism in the disease course of MS. Future research on a larger scale is needed to confirm these findings.PMID:38578462 | DOI:10.1007/s11033-024-09369-w (Source: Molecular Biology Reports)

Protective Role of Vitamin D Against Development of Active Tuberculosis in Close Household Contacts of Pulmonary Tuberculosis Patients: A Prospective Cohort Study
Indian J Clin Biochem. 2024 Apr;39(2):248-256. doi: 10.1007/s12291-022-01110-3. Epub 2023 Jan 12.ABSTRACTVitamin-D is known to promote innate immune responses by acting as a cofactor of VDR for induction of antimicrobial peptides like cathelicidin. Close household contacts of pulmonary tuberculosis patients are at high risk of active infection, Therefore, possible role of vitamin-D in TB prevention through cathelicidin production was studied in high-risk household contacts (HHCs) of pulmonary tuberculosis (PTB) patients. 20 HHCs of PTB patients were recruited and followed up for one year. Levels of vitamin-D (25(OH)D) and ...

Use of complementary medicine and its association with SARS-CoV-2 vaccination during the COVID-19 pandemic: a longitudinal cohort study
CONCLUSION: While complementary medicine is increasingly used, it is rarely discussed with primary care physicians. Complementary medicine use, especially for COVID-19 prevention, is associated with COVID-19 vaccination status. Communication between physicians, patients, and complementary medicine therapists is encouraged to facilitate a truly holistic approach to making a shared decision based on the best available information.PMID:38579302 | DOI:10.57187/s.3505 (Source: Swiss Medical Weekly)

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 1636: Comparative Performance Assessment of Novel Fluorescence Immunoassay POCTs for Measuring Circulating Levels of Vitamin-D
onio D’Avolio Vitamin D (Vit D) is a fat-soluble molecule acting like a hormone, and it is involved in several biological mechanisms such as gene expression, calcium homeostasis, bone metabolism, immune modulation, viral protection, and neuromuscular functions. Vit D deficiency can lead to chronic hypocalcemia, hyperparathyroidism, and many other pathological conditions; in this context, low and very low levels of 25-hydroxy-vitamin D (25-OH-D) were found to be associated with an increased risk of COVID-19 infection and the likelihood of many severe diseases. For all these reasons, it is important to quantify and mon...
