Targeting SRD5A1 and MMP-2/NLRP3/TGF- β1 axis alleviates the amlodipine-induced gingival hyperplasia in rats: Emerging role of saw palmetto and folic acid
Food Chem Toxicol. 2024 May 11;189:114731. doi: 10.1016/j.fct.2024.114731. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTSaw palmetto (SAW), the herbal drug used to treat prostatic hyperplasia, exerts its antiproliferative effects by blocking steroid 5 alpha-reductase (SRD5A1) activity, that has also been involved in gingival hyperplasia (GH) pathogenesis. Concurrently, folic acid (FA) could reduce GH prevalence via its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory effects. Thus, this study tended to assess the potential therapeutic efficacy of SAW, alone and along with FA, against amlodipine-induced gingival inflammation and overgrowth in rats. Rats...

Low Vitamin A Status: A Potential Limiting Factor for Hemoglobin Improvement to Iron –Folic Acid Supplementation in Adolescent Girls with Iron Deficiency Anemia
In conclusion, low vitamin A status is a significant limiting factor contributing to the inadequate Hb increment during IFA supplementation, which may be particularly relevant in regions where vitamin-A deficiency is still a public health concern. (Source: Indian Journal of Clinical Biochemistry)

Influence of folic acid and vitamin B12 supplementation on arsenic methylation: A double-blinded, placebo-controlled trial in Bangladeshi children
CONCLUSION: This RCT confirms that FA + B12 supplementation increases arsenic methylation in children as reflected by decreased MMAs and increased DMAs in blood and urine. Nutritional interventions may improve arsenic methylation and elimination in children, potentially reducing arsenic toxicity while also improving nutritional status.PMID:38728816 | DOI:10.1016/j.envint.2024.108715 (Source: Environment International)

A real-world cross-sectional study evaluating the role of an oral amino acid-based supplement in nutrient intake by preschoolers on a cow's milk elimination diet
CONCLUSIONS: The use of a complete oral amino acid-based supplement has a positive effect on the diet quality of preschoolers on cow's milk elimination diet because of food allergy, promoting higher intake of energy, calcium, vitamin D, and other essential nutrients.PMID:38721954 | DOI:10.15586/aei.v52i3.1053 (Source: Allergologia et Immunopathologia)

A Case of Refractory Anemia in Patient of Chronic Kidney Disease and the Challenges in its Management
J Assoc Physicians India. 2023 Oct;71(10):94-95. doi: 10.59556/japi.71.0331.ABSTRACTAnemia is a common complication of chronic kidney disease (CKD) that has been classically attributed to inadequate production of endogenous erythropoietin.1 Though there are many other common causes of refractory anemia in CKD like iron deficiency, vitamin B12, and folic acid deficiency, noncompliance to dialysis and erythropoietin therapy rare causes like blood loss, bone marrow failure, infections causing aplastic crisis like CMV, parvovirus B19 should be ruled out. Parvovirus has an extreme tropism for erythroid cells and is an uncommon ...

Effect of multiple micronutrient-fortified bouillon on micronutrient status among women and children in the Northern Region of Ghana: Protocol for the Condiment Micronutrient Innovation Trial (CoMIT), a community-based randomized controlled trial
This study aims to evaluate the impact of multiple micronutrient-fortified bouillon cubes, compared to control bouillon cubes (fortified with iodine only), on micronutrient status and hemoglobin concentrations among lactating and non-lactating WRA and young children in northern Ghana. MethodsThis randomized, controlled doubly-masked trial will be conducted in the Kumbungu and Tolon districts in the Northern Region of Ghana, where prior data indicate multiple micronutrient deficiencies are common. Participants will be: 1) non-pregnant non-lactating WRA (15 –49 y), 2) children 2–5 y, and 3) non-pregnant lactating women 4...
