Knowledge, awareness, and use of folic acid among women of childbearing age living in a peri-urban community in Ghana: a cross-sectional survey
Folic acid, a water-soluble B-complex vitamin, plays a crucial role in DNA synthesis and maintenance, making it particularly significant during reproduction. Its well-known ability to reduce the risk of congen... (Source: BMC Pregnancy and Childbirth)

Supplementation with vitamin D improves the embryo quality in in vitro fertilization (IVF) programs, independently of the patients ’ basal vitamin D status
ConclusionSupplementation of VD in patients undergoing ICSI procedures significantly improved the number of top-quality embryos compared with the control group, either starting from VD normal baseline values or starting from low values.Trial registration number07/2018. Maternal folic acid supplementation during pregnancy in association with childhood overweight or obesity
CONCLUSIONS: This study provides novel evidence that maternal FAS during pregnancy was significantly associated with a decreased risk of childhood OWO and adiposity, particularly among children with no breastfeeding and lower parental educational level.PMID:38572577 | DOI:10.1002/oby.24012 (Source: Obesity)

Myofibroblast-derived exosomes enhance macrophages to myofibroblasts transition and kidney fibrosis
Ren Fail. 2024 Dec;46(1):2334406. doi: 10.1080/0886022X.2024.2334406. Epub 2024 Apr 4.ABSTRACTA critical event in the pathogenesis of kidney fibrosis is the transition of macrophages into myofibroblasts (MMT). Exosomes play an important role in crosstalk among cells in the kidney and the development of renal fibrosis. However, the role of myofibroblast-derived exosomes in the process of MMT and renal fibrosis progression remains unknown. Here, we examined the role of myofibroblast-derived exosomes in MMT and kidney fibrogenesis. In vitro, transforming growth factor-β1 stimulated the differentiation of kidney fibroblasts i...

Cyclodextrin-conjugated low-molecular-weight polyethyleneimine as a macromolecular contrast agent for tumor-targeted magnetic resonance imaging
RSC Adv. 2024 Apr 2;14(15):10499-10506. doi: 10.1039/d4ra00316k. eCollection 2024 Mar 26.ABSTRACTMacromolecular contrast agents (CAs) usually possess excellent contrast ability and tumor-targeting ability in comparison with small-molecule CAs, especially for early tumor detection. Herein, cyclodextrin-conjugated low-molecular-weight polyethyleneimine was synthesized as a macromolecular backbone. Afterward, a linear polymer with adamantane terminal and Gd chelates was synthesized, followed by conjugating with the backbone via host-guest interaction. Finally, folic acid was conjugated onto the as-prepared CAs through bioorth...

Vitamin B12 Status and Hyperhomocysteinemia in Patients with Rheumatoid Arthritis Treated with Methotrexate and Folic Acid
CONCLUSION: Our data show high plasma homocysteine levels among RA patients treated with methotrexate and folic acid. While plasma vitamin B12 levels were similar between the two groups, high plasma homocysteine is also a sensitive marker of vitamin B12 deficiency. Additional studies should evaluate for the presence of clinical features of vitamin B12 deficiency and hyperhomocysteinemia among RA patients treated with methotrexate and folic acid.PMID:38561045 | DOI:10.1016/j.amjms.2024.03.020 (Source: The American Journal of the Medical Sciences)

The role of metabolism in cardiac development
Curr Top Dev Biol. 2024;156:201-243. doi: 10.1016/bs.ctdb.2024.01.005. Epub 2024 Feb 9.ABSTRACTMetabolism is the fundamental process that sustains life. The heart, in particular, is an organ of high energy demand, and its energy substrates have been studied for more than a century. In recent years, there has been a growing interest in understanding the role of metabolism in the early differentiation of pluripotent stem cells and in cancer research. Studies have revealed that metabolic intermediates from glycolysis and the tricarboxylic acid cycle act as co-factors for intracellular signal transduction, playing crucial role...
