2024 Alzheimer's disease facts and figures
This article describes the public health impact of Alzheimer's disease (AD), including prevalence and incidence, mortality and morbidity, use and costs of care and the ramifications of AD for family caregivers, the dementia workforce and society. The Special Report discusses the larger health care system for older adults with cognitive issues, focusing on the role of caregivers and non-physician health care professionals. An estimated 6.9 million Americans age 65 and older are living with Alzheimer's dementia today. This number could grow to 13.8 million by 2060, barring the development of medical breakthroughs to prevent ...

The impact of stroke on employment income: A cohort study using hospital and income tax data in Ontario, Canada
CONCLUSIONS: It is important for healthcare and service providers to recognize the impact of stroke on return to prestroke levels of employment income. Low-income stroke survivors experience a more drastic loss in employment income and may need additional social support.PMID:38689431 | DOI:10.1177/02692155241249345 (Source: Clinical Rehabilitation)

Home blood pressure measurement self-reporting in real-life practices using the Hy-Result app: self-monitoring and digital pathway
CONCLUSIONS: Our real-life study shows that 90% of the HBPM reports include the required minimum number of BP readings to allow the calculation of a reliable average among whom 40% have uncontrolled BP levels. The self-management Hy-Result web app demonstrates significant potential for inclusion in the patient care process and reinforces the patient's engagement to independently monitor and self-reported their BP. When the mean BP is not within the recommended range, the users were automatically prompted by text messages to seek medical advice by the software. Further research should determine the extent to which users adh...

Chinese guidelines for the diagnosis and management of atrial fibrillation
AbstractAtrial fibrillation (AF) is the most common sustained cardiac arrhythmia, significantly impacting patients' quality of life and increasing the risk of death, stroke, heart failure, and dementia. Over the past two decades, there have been significant breakthroughs in AF risk prediction and screening, stroke prevention, rhythm control, catheter ablation, and integrated management. During this period, the scale, quality, and experience of AF management in China have greatly improved, providing a solid foundation for the development of the guidelines for the diagnosis and management of AF. To further promote standardiz...

Misperception of body verticality in neurological disorders: A systematic review and meta ‐analysis
ConclusionThese findings suggest a potential misperception of SPV in patients with stroke and other neurological disturbances. Patients with CNSD could present an alteration of vestibular and somatosensory contribution to verticality construction, particularly stroke patients with pusher syndrome (PS), followed by those with PS combined with hemineglect. Multicenter comparison using two AI stroke CT perfusion software packages for determining thrombectomy eligibility
Stroke AI platforms assess infarcted core and potentially salvageable tissue (penumbra) to identify patients suitable for mechanical thrombectomy. Few studies have compared outputs of these platforms, and none have been multicenter or considered NIHSS or scanner/protocol differences. Our objective was to compare volume estimates and thrombectomy eligibility from two widely used CT perfusion (CTP) packages, Viz.ai and RAPID.AI, in a large multicenter cohort. Robust Ensemble of Two Different Multimodal Approaches to Segment 3D Ischemic Stroke Segmentation Using Brain Tumor Representation Among Multiple Center Datasets
AbstractIschemic stroke segmentation at an acute stage is vital in assessing the severity of patients ’ impairment and guiding therapeutic decision-making for reperfusion. Although many deep learning studies have shown attractive performance in medical segmentation, it is difficult to use these models trained on public data with private hospitals’ datasets. Here, we demonstrate an ensemble model that employs two different multimodal approaches for generalization, a more effective way to perform on external datasets. First, after we jointly train a segmentation model on diffusion-weighted imaging (DWI) and apparent diff...

Edaravone dexborneol regulates γ-aminobutyric acid transaminase in rats with acute intracerebral hemorrhage
Edaravone dexborneol is neuroprotective against ischemic stroke, with free radical-scavenging and anti-inflammatory effects, but its effects in hemorrhagic stroke remain unclear. We evaluated whether edaravone dexborneol has a neuroprotective effect in intracerebral hemorrhage, and its underlying mechanisms. (Source: Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases)
