Visual imagery deficits in posterior cortical atrophy
Cogn Neuropsychol. 2024 May 2:1-16. doi: 10.1080/02643294.2024.2346362. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVisual imagery has a close overlapping relationship with visual perception. Posterior cortical atrophy (PCA) is a neurodegenerative syndrome marked by early impairments in visuospatial processing and visual object recognition. We asked whether PCA would therefore also be marked by deficits in visual imagery, tested using objective forced-choice questionnaires, and whether imagery deficits would be selective for certain properties. We recruited four patients with PCA and a patient with integrative visual agnosia due to bila...

Utilizing network pharmacology, molecular docking, and animal models to explore the therapeutic potential of the WenYang FuYuan recipe for cerebral ischemia-reperfusion injury through AGE-RAGE and NF- κB/p38MAPK signaling pathway modulation
CONCLUSION: This study utilized network pharmacology, molecular docking, and animal experiments to identify the potential mechanism of the WenYang FuYuan recipe, which may be associated with the regulation of the AGE-RAGE signaling pathway and the inhibition of target proteins and mRNAs in the downstream NF-kB/p38MAPK pathway.PMID:38697555 | DOI:10.1016/j.exger.2024.112448 (Source: Experimental Gerontology)

IL-1 β Inhibition Partially Negates the Beneficial Effects of Diet-Induced Atherosclerosis Regression in Mice
CONCLUSIONS: Taken together, IL-1β appears to be required for the maintenance of standard laboratory diet-induced reductions in plaque burden and increases in multiple indices of plaque stability.PMID:38695167 | DOI:10.1161/ATVBAHA.124.320800 (Source: Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis and Vascular Biology)

Subjects with carotid webs demonstrate pro-thrombotic hemodynamics compared to subjects with carotid atherosclerosis
Sci Rep. 2024 May 2;14(1):10092. doi: 10.1038/s41598-024-60666-7.ABSTRACTCarotid artery webs (CaW) are non-atherosclerotic projections into the vascular lumen and have been linked to up to one-third of cryptogenic strokes in younger patients. Determining how CaW affects local hemodynamics is essential for understanding clot formation and stroke risk. Computational fluid dynamics simulations were used to investigate patient-specific hemodynamics in carotid artery bifurcations with CaW, bifurcations with atherosclerotic lesions having a similar degree of lumen narrowing, and with healthy carotid bifurcations. Simulations wer...

Multiwavelength laser diode based portable photoacoustic and ultrasound imaging system for point of care applications
J Biophotonics. 2024 May 2:e202400058. doi: 10.1002/jbio.202400058. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTVascular diseases are a leading cause of death and disability worldwide. Despite having precursor conditions like peripheral arterial disease (PAD), they are often only diagnosed after the onset of stroke or heart attack. Low-cost, portable, noninvasive, point-of-care (POC), label-free assessment of deep vascular function benefits PAD diagnosis, especially in resource poor settings of the world. Doppler ultrasound-based blood flow measurements can diagnose PAD, albeit with limited sensitivity and specificity. To overcome this,...

Baseline characteristics and outcome of stroke patients after endovascular therapy according to previous symptomatic vascular disease and sex
CONCLUSIONS: Previous vascular events increased the risk of in-hospital complications and poorer outcome in the analyzed patients with EVT-eligible LVO-AIS. Our findings may support risk assessment in these stroke patients and could contribute to the design of future studies.PMID:38694775 | PMC:PMC11061446 | DOI:10.3389/fneur.2024.1293905 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Anti-coagulants-induced intracranial hemorrhage managed with decompressive craniectomy: a case report of lesson learned
CONCLUSION: In the background of the low prevalence of OACs-induced ICH, there is an absence of a robust guiding treatment protocol. Furthermore, there exist minimal reported cases which underwent surgical intervention and resulted in a good prognosis.PMID:38694382 | PMC:PMC11060273 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001996 (Source: Annals of Medicine)

Factor Xa inhibitors vs. warfarin in patients with Hughes syndrome: a systematic review and meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials
CONCLUSION: Factor Xa inhibitors exhibited an increased risk of stroke among patients with Hughes syndrome. In addition, although not significant, the higher RRs among patients on factor Xa inhibitors may indicate a higher risk of thrombotic events associated with factor Xa inhibitors.PMID:38694373 | PMC:PMC11060306 | DOI:10.1097/MS9.0000000000001999 (Source: Annals of Medicine)
