Targeting Dectin-1 and or VISTA enhances anti-tumor immunity in melanoma but not colorectal cancer model
ConclusionOur study proposes Dectin-1 as a potential adjunctive target with ICBs, orchestrating a comprehensive engagement of innate and adaptive immune responses in melanoma. This innovative approach holds promise for overcoming acquired resistance to ICBs in cancer treatment, offering avenues for further exploration and development. (Source: Cellular Oncology)

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1688: Association of miR-146a-5p and miR-21-5p with Prognostic Features in Melanomas
Manuela Ferracin Emy Dika Background: Cutaneous melanoma (CM) is one of the most lethal tumors among skin cancers and its incidence is rising worldwide. Recent data support the role of microRNAs (miRNAs) in melanoma carcinogenesis and their potential use as disease biomarkers. Methods: We quantified the expression of miR-146a-5p and miR-21-5p in 170 formalin-fixed paraffin embedded (FFPE) samples of CM, namely 116 superficial spreading melanoma (SSM), 26 nodular melanoma (NM), and 28 lentigo maligna melanoma (LMM). We correlated miRNA expression with specific histopathologic features including Breslow thickness (BT...

Identification of protein methyltransferases 5 associated with ferroptosis and immune cell infiltration of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma
Aging (Albany NY). 2024 Apr 25;16. doi: 10.18632/aging.205768. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTHead and neck tumors are malignant tumors that appear in the head and neck. Although much progress has been made in the treatment of head and neck tumors, many challenges remain. The prognosis of some advanced cases remains poor and survival and quality of life after treatment face certain limitations. Therefore, further research into the pathogenesis and treatment options for head and neck tumors is important in order to improve the prognosis and quality of life of patients. The Protein Arginine Methyltransferase (PRMT) family is ...

Risk factors for lymph node metastasis in superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
World J Gastroenterol. 2024 Apr 7;30(13):1810-1814. doi: 10.3748/wjg.v30.i13.1810.ABSTRACTIn this editorial, we comment on the article by Wang et al published in the recent issue of the World Journal of Gastroenterology in 2023. We focused on identifying risk factors for lymph node metastasis (LNM) in superficial esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (SESCC) patients and how to construct a simple and reliable clinical prediction model to assess the risk of LNM in SESCC patients, thereby helping to guide the selection of an appropriate treatment plan. The current standard treatment for SESCC is radical esophagectomy with lymph...

Bioinformatics analysis and experimental verification of NLRX1 as a prognostic factor for esophageal squamous cell carcinoma
Oncol Lett. 2024 Apr 11;27(6):264. doi: 10.3892/ol.2024.14397. eCollection 2024 Jun.ABSTRACTNucleotide binding and oligomeric domain-like receptor X1 (NLRX1), a member of the NLR family, is associated with the physiological and pathological processes of inflammation, autophagy, immunity, metabolism and mitochondrial regulation, and has been demonstrated to have pro- or antitumor effects in various tumor types. However, the biological function of NLRX1 in esophageal squamous cell carcinoma (ESCC) has remained elusive. In the present study, by using bioinformatics methods, the differential expression of NLRX1 at the mRNA lev...

Metastatic Melanoma of the Common Bile Duct Presented with Dyspepsia
We describe a very rare case of MM metastasis to the common bile duct (CBD), presented with only dyspeptic symptoms. The patient had mildly elevated alkaline phosphatase and gamma-glutamyl transferase levels. Magnetic resonance cholangiopancreatography demonstrated a dilated common bile duct with a distal stricture. The MM diagnosis was established with the ampulla of Vater biopsy specimens obtained by endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), and the patient's symptoms were resolved after biliary stenting. Both primary CBD cancer and other cancer types like MM that metastasize to CBD can cause obstruction and...

Prognosis value of heat-shock proteins in esophageal and esophagogastric cancer: A systematic review and meta-analysis
CONCLUSION: The expression levels of certain families of HSP, such as HSP40 and 60 and HSF1, are associated with long-term survival and lymph node dissemination in patients with esophageal and esophagogastric cancer.PMID:38660660 | PMC:PMC11037039 | DOI:10.4251/wjgo.v16.i4.1578 (Source: Cancer Control)

Interleukin 33 supports squamous cell carcinoma growth via a dual effect on tumour proliferation, migration and invasion, and T cell activation
AbstractInterleukin (IL)-33 is an important cytokine in the tumour microenvironment; it is known to promote the growth and metastasis of solid cancers, such as gastric, colorectal, ovarian and breast cancer. Our group demonstrated that the IL-33/ST2 pathway enhances the development of squamous cell carcinoma (SCC). Conversely, other researchers have reported that IL-33 inhibits tumour progression. In addition, the crosstalk between IL-33, cancer cells and immune cells in SCC remains unknown. The aim of this study was to investigate the effect of IL-33 on the biology of head and neck SCC lines and to evaluate the impact of ...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1669: Quantitative Optical Redox Imaging of Melanoma Xenografts with Different Metastatic Potentials
Lin Z. Li To develop imaging biomarkers for tumors aggressiveness, our previous optical redox imaging (ORI) studies of the reduced nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and oxidized flavoproteins (Fp, containing flavin adenine dinucleotide, i.e., FAD) in tumor xenografts of human melanoma associated the high optical redox ratio (ORR = Fp/(Fp + NADH)) and its heterogeneity to the high invasive/metastatic potential, without having reported quantitative results for NADH and Fp. Here, we implemented a calibration procedure to facilitate imaging the nominal concentrations of tissue NADH and Fp in the mouse xenografts of ...

Systematic evaluation of Merkel cell carcinoma clinical practice guidelines using the AGREE II instrument
The objective of this study was to appraise such CPGs via the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE II) instrument. Eight CPGs were identified via systematic literature search following Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses (PRISMA) criteria. Four appraisers trained in AGREE II protocols evaluated each CPG and deemed two CPGs as high quality, five as moderate quality, and one as low quality. Intraclass correlation coefficients (ICCs) were calculated to verify reviewer consistency as excellent, good, and moderate across four, one, and one domain, respectively. The majority o...

Advantages of the co2 laser use in the rare condition of nasal mucosa squamous cell carcinoma surgery in dogs —a clinical prospective study
AbstractNasal mucosa tumors are an uncommon process and very dificult to work on with surgery. Radiotherapy associated or not with chemotherapy is the standard method to treat the disease. However, its access it is in the majority of the case not possible, making the surgery the best choice to try to achieve the patient's control. The anatomy of the region makes the complete surgical resection very difficult to achieve using the common and conventional blade scalpel surgery.  The study features the advantages of using a CO2 laser to perform nasal mucosa carcinoma surgery in 6 dogs (N  = 6). For the work we used an Aes...
