Systemic Connective Tissue Disease and Neuromyelitis Optica Spectrum Disorder Coexistence: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis
CONCLUSIONS: Our research found that the coexistence of these two disorders was more frequent in female rheumatologic patients with a SjS diagnosis with neurological manifestations and in neurologic patients for whom a SjS diagnosis was suspected. Similarly, NMOSD are less frequently found in SLE and very rarely incident in Mixed Connective Tissue Disease (MCTD) patients. These considerations should be taken into account in clinical experience of rheumatologists and neurologists, since early diagnosis of both conditions may influence the timing of immunosuppressive therapy and the prevention of systemic disabilities.PMID:3...

Primary Sjogren's syndrome presenting as ptosis and eyelid swelling: A case report
We report the case of a 27- year-old woman presenting to our clinic with the complaint of ptosis and eyelid swelling. She also had a positive anti-acetylcholine receptor antibody test and her initial presentation mimicked Myasthenia Gravis. Her autoimmune workup revealed a positive titer of Anti Ro SSA antibodies. Myasthenia G ravis was ruled out on electrodiagnostic studies which showed no decremental response, and pSS was confirmed on lip biopsy. Our case highlights that it is important to interpret the antibody test results in the context of clinical findings as we can have spurious results in autoimmune diseases. Auto ...

Inflammatory cytokines and their potential role in Sjogren's syndrome risk: insights from a mendelian randomization study
CONCLUSION: Our study conducted through MR, identified various inflammatory cytokines associated with SS risk, validating some previous research results and offering some new potential biomarkers for SS. However, these findings necessitate further research for validation and exploration of their precise role in the onset and progression of SS.PMID:38365917 | DOI:10.1186/s42358-024-00354-2 (Source: Adv Data)

Association of Systemic Markers of Inflammation with Signs and Symptoms of Dry Eye Disease and Sjogren's Syndrome in the Dry Eye Assessment and Management (DREAM ©) Study
CONCLUSIONS: This study did not show evidence of significant systemic inflammation in participants with moderate-to-severe DED, based on the markers tested. PM-Scl100 and Sm may be associated with more severe DED symptoms. U2SnRNP A', Ro52, La, DNA, and Ro60 may be associated with more severe ocular surface disease. Ro52 and PL-7 may be diagnostic markers for SS. Future research evaluating these relationships and their clinical significance is needed.PMID:38345056 | DOI:10.1080/02713683.2024.2312937 (Source: Current Eye Research)

Peripartum care of pregnancy complicated by sjogren syndrome
A 32-year-old nullipara diagnosed with Sjogren syndrome was referred to the hospital outpatient clinic at 34 weeks, with suspicion of placenta previa. There was no history of vaginal bleeding during pregnancy, but the patient mentioned that she had positive anti-Ro, ANA2, SS-A and SS-B antibodies detected in laboratory test. She was under observation of atrio-ventricular heart block in repetitive ultrasound examinations. Although placenta previa was ruled out, she remained under close observation until 37 weeks. New investigational drugs to treat Sjogren's syndrome: lessons learnt from immunology
Expert Opin Investig Drugs. 2024 Jan 31:1-10. doi: 10.1080/13543784.2024.2312216. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Sjögren's syndrome is a heterogeneous autoimmune condition that impairs quality of life because of dryness, fatigue, pain, and systemic involvements. Current treatment largely depends on empirical evidence, with no effective therapy approved. Clinical trials on targeted drugs often fail to report efficacy due to common factors.AREAS COVERED: This review summarizes the pathogenesis and what caused the failure of new investigational drugs in clinical trials, highlighting solutions for more effective ...

Fatigue and sleep quality in Chinese adults with connective tissue disease: A cross-sectional study
CONCLUSIONS: More than 3/5 CTD patients experience fatigue and poor sleep quality, and not different among CTD subgroups. Targeted interventions are needed to reduce fatigue, improve sleep quality, and ultimately improve the prognosis of patients with CTD.PMID:38265629 | DOI:10.1007/s11325-024-02993-7 (Source: Sleep and Breathing)

Hypokalemia Related to Distal Renal Tubular Acidosis as an Initial Presentation of Primary Sjogren's Syndrome
Acta Med Indones. 2023 Oct;55(4):449-454.ABSTRACTHypokalemia due to loss of potassium through the kidneys can be caused by distal Renal Tubular Acidosis (dRTA). The etiology of dRTA can be primary due to genetic defects or secondary to autoimmune diseases, especially Sjogren's syndrome (SS). The occurrence of dRTA in SS patients is low, at only 5% of cases. This case was interesting because dRTA was the initial clinical manifestation that led to the diagnosis of SS in the patient. A 48-year-old woman came with complaints of recurrent weakness. The patient was routinely hospitalized with severe hypokalemia and received pota...
