Remnant Cholesterol And Risk Of Ischemic Stroke In 112,512 Individuals From The General Population
Background and Aims: High remnant cholesterol concentrations are associated with high risk of ischemic heart disease, but whether this is also the case for ischemic stroke is unknown. We tested the hypothesis that high remnant cholesterol concentrations are associated with increased risk of ischemic stroke in the general population.

Vertebrobasilar Artery Calcification: Prevalence And Risk Factors In The General Population
Background and Aims: Posterior circulation stroke accounts for approximately one-quarter of all ischaemic strokes and could be attributed to atherosclerotic disease in the vertebrobasilar arteries. Interestingly, little is known on the prevalence and risk factors of vertebrobasilar atherosclerosis. We aimed to determine the prevalence and risk factors of vertebrobasilar artery calcification (VBAC) as a proxy of vertebrobasilar atherosclerosis.

Ldl Uptake And Neutrophil Effector Function
Background and Aims: The number of activated neutrophils in the circulation of hyperlipidemic patients is correlated with levels of low density lipoprotein (LDL). Activated neutrophils can expel their chromatin, forming net-like structures. These neutrophil extracellular traps (NETs) constitute important risk factors for acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and stroke. Pro-protein convertase subtilisin/kexin 9 (PCSK9) is a regulator of LDL receptor (LDLR) expression and has gained attention in the treatment of hyperlipidemia.

Transcriptomic Analysis Of Extracellular Vesicles For Biomarker Discovery In Peripheral Artery Disease (Pad)
Background and Aims: Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a major cause of chronic vascular pathologies in developed countries. PAD patients are at high risk of thrombotic events -myocardial infarction, stroke- and death, urging to find new prognostic tools. Extracellular vesicles (EVs) contain nucleic acids from the cell of origin that might represent their molecular imprint. We hypothesize that transcriptomic study of circulating EVs might be useful in search for new long-term prognostic markers in PAD patients.

Subclinical Atherosclerosis And Its Progression Is Modulated By Plin2 Through A Feed-Forward Loop Between Lxr And Autophagy
Background and Aims: Hyperlipidaemia is a major risk factor for cardiovascular disease and atherosclerosis is the underlying cause of both myocardial infarction and stroke. We have previously shown that the Pro251 variant of perilipin-2 (PLIN2) reduces plasma triglycerides and may therefore be beneficial for atherosclerosis development. The aim of this study was to delineate the putative beneficial effects of the Pro251 variant of PLIN2 on subclinical atherosclerosis and the mechanism by which it acts.

Combined Effect Of Helicobacter Pylori Infection And Elevated C-Reactive Protein On 3-Month Prognosis Of Ischemic Stroke
Background and Aims: To investigate the combined effect of Helicobacter pylori (HP) infection and elevated C-reactive protein (CRP) on the prognosis of acute ischemic stroke patients at 3 months.

Serum Insulin Levels Are Associated With Plaque Composition In The Carotid Artery: The Rotterdam Study
Background and Aims: Insulin resistance and high levels of glucose are implicated in the etiology of cardiovascular disease, including stroke. However, their direct influence on the formation and composition of atherosclerotic plaque, the single most important risk factor for cardiovascular disease, remains unclear.

Upstream Region Of Carotid Plaque Shows More Intraplaque Hemorrhage In Stroke Patients: The Plaque At Risk (Parisk) Study
Background and Aims: Non-invasive visualization of intraplaque haemorrhage (IPH) as a key marker contributing to plaque vulnerability is rapidly gaining ground. However, the mechanisms contributing to IPH development are incompletely understood. We hypothesise that plaque deformations during every heartbeat lead to tissue damage (, thereby causing IPH. We aim to study non-invasively whether there is a difference in volume of IPH in the upstream region of the plaque in stroke patients with carotid stenosis and IPH.

Serum lipoprotein (a) is associated with increased risk of stroke in Chinese adults: A prospective study
Epidemiological evidence on the association between elevated lipoprotein (a) (Lp (a)) with risk of stroke remains inconsistent. We aimed to investigate the association between serum Lp (a) level and the risk of stroke among middle-aged and elderly Chinese.

Effect of initiating statin therapy on long-term outcomes of patients with dyslipidemia after intracerebral hemorrhage
Intracerebral hemorrhage (ICH) has a higher mortality than ischemic stroke. Statin is beneficial for stroke, but high potency statin treatment has been associated with the risk of hemorrhagic stroke. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of initiating statin therapy after ICH on cardiovascular outcomes.

Culprit intracranial plaque without substantial stenosis in acute ischemic stroke on vessel wall MRI: A systematic review
Intracranial atherosclerotic plaque is associated with ischemic strokes without substantial stenosis, and needs better characterization. We aim to investigate the clinical significance of intracranial plaque without substantial stenosis by high resolution vessel wall MRI (vwMRI) through a systematic review of existing studies.

Prognostic value of coronary artery disease-reporting and data system (CAD-RADS) score for cardiovascular events in ischemic stroke
The coronary artery disease-reporting and data system (CAD-RADS) was recently developed to standardize CAD classifications and incorporate clinical management. We aimed to investigate the prognostic value and additional risk stratification benefits of the CAD-RADS compared to coronary artery calcium scores (CACS) and CAD extent classifications in ischemic stroke patients without cardiac symptoms.

Epidemiology, risk factors, and opportunities for prevention of cardiovascular disease in individuals of South Asian ethnicity living in Europe
South Asian (SA) individuals represent a large, growing population in a number of European countries. These individuals, particularly first-generation SA immigrants, are at higher risk of developing type 2 diabetes, atherogenic dyslipidaemia, and coronary heart disease than most other racial/ethnic groups living in Europe. SAs also have an increased risk of stroke compared to European-born individuals. Despite a large body of conclusive evidence, SA-specific cardiovascular health promotion and preventive interventions are currently scarce in most European countries, as well as at the European Union level.
