Infections with unusual organisms are commonly found in patients with primary as well as acquired immunodeficiency. It is estimated that 1 in 1,200 individuals in the US have a diagnosis of primary immunodeficiency; with Common Variable Immunodeficiency (CVID) accounting for approximately 35% of cases.1 CVID is a heterogeneous disorder that is primarily a defect of the humoral immune system; although approximately 50% of patients have T Cell defects as well. Patients with CVID have increased susceptibility to infections, particularly of the upper and lower respiratory tract as well as increased incidence of autoimmune diseases and neoplasms.

Autoimmunity and hernia mesh: fact or fiction?
ConclusionThere is little evidence that the use of polypropylene mesh can lead to autoimmunity. A large number of potential triggers of autoimmunity along with the genetic predisposition to autoimmune disease and the commonality of hernia, make a cause and effect difficult to unravel at present. Biomaterials cause foreign body reactions, but a chronic foreign body reaction does not indicate autoimmunity, a common misunderstanding in the literature.

Subacute Onset of Chronic Urticaria Post COVID-19 Vaccination
Urticaria has been known to be triggered for a variety of allergy and non-allergic etiologies. Autoimmune disease, infection, and immunizations can be considered as possible underlying differentials for non-allergic urticarial eruption. I hypothesized that a subacute onset of chronic urticarial eruptions and/or demographic state was also possibly attributable to COVID-19 vaccinations in select patients observed at a single allergy and immunology practice.

Cytokine Dysregulation in Alopecia Areata Associated with Atopy
Alopecia areata (AA) is a common autoimmune disease, causing patchy hair loss that can progress to involve the entire scalp (totalis) or body (universalis). Alopecia areata co- morbidities include atopic diseases with a high association approaching 25%. The specific immune mechanisms driving hair loss and association of AA and atopy may be related to specific systemic production of cytokines which was investigated in this study of patients with and without atopy.
