Bioinformation. 2022 Nov 30;18(11):1092-1097. doi: 10.6026/973206300181092. eCollection 2022.ABSTRACTAnemia during pregnancy causes 40% of maternal fatalities in underdeveloped nations, according to statistics from the WHO. Pregnant women should meet the requirements for various nutrients, notably micronutrients, to ensure a better pregnancy outcome in the future. Cucurbita moschata (Pumpkin) seeds contain a variety of compounds, such as m-carboxyphenylalanine, amino butyrate, and citrulline, as well as a number of other amino acids. It has a wide variety of biological activity such as antioxidant, anticancer, anti-inflamm...

Analysis of Nutritional Characteristics and Willingness to Pay of Consumers for Dry-Cured Sausages ( < em > Salchich ón < /em > ) Made with Textured Seed Oils
This study focuses on replacing animal fat in dry-cured sausages (Salchichón) with textured chia, poppy, melon, and pumpkin oils. The research aims to evaluate the physical and nutritional changes resulting from this substitution and assess consumer acceptance through sensory analysis. The use of seed oils led to slight color changes and comparable texture, except for cohesiveness. The incorporation of textured seed oils resulted in reduced fat content, increased proportions of ashes and protein, and decreased energy value. The fatty acid composition showed lower proportions of saturated fatty acids and increased polyunsa...

A pathogenesis-related protein 1 of Cucurbita moschata responds to powdery mildew infection
Pumpkin (Cucurbita moschata Duch.) productivity is severely hindered by powdery mildew (PM) worldwide. The causative agent of pumpkin PM is Podosphaera xanthii, a biotrophic fungus. Pathogenesis-related protein 1 (PR1) homolog was previously identified from transcriptomic analysis of a PM-resistant pumpkin. Here, we investigated the effects of CmPR1 gene from pumpkin for resistance to PM. Subcellular localization assay revealed that CmPR1 is a cytoplasmic protein in plants. The expression of CmPR1 gene was strongly induced by P. xanthii inoculation at 48 h and exogenous ethylene (ET), jasmonic acid (JA) and NaCl treatment...

Molecules, Vol. 28, Pages 5484: Health Benefits, Antioxidant Activity, and Sensory Attributes of Selected Cold-Pressed Oils
This study focused on the estimation and comparison of the physicochemical properties and sensory quality of six CPOs: linseed oil (CPLO), pumpkin oil (CPPO), milk thistle oil (CPMTO), rapeseed oil (CPRO), camelina oil (CPCO), and sunflower oil (CPSO), which are the most popular in the Polish market. These oils were analysed for their fatty acid composition (FAC), their tocopherol, sterol, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAHs), water, and volatile matter (WVM) contents, as well as their antioxidant activity (AA) and oxidative stability parameters. Moreover, quantitative descriptive analysis (QDA) was performed to obtain d...

Pollution Characteristics and Risk Assessment of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Farmland Soil and Crops in the Suburbs of Urumqi
Huan Jing Ke Xue. 2023 Jul 8;44(7):4039-4051. doi: 10.13227/j.hjkx.202207215.ABSTRACTIn order to understand the occurrence of PAHs in soil and crops, the enrichment capacity of different crops for PAHs, and the distribution characteristics of PAHs in different parts of crops, the crops and soil planted in the farmland around Urumqi were studied as examples. Samples were collected in the farmland gathering area in the suburb of Urumqi in July 2021. A total of 100 crop samples were collected, including 21 crop species and 45 surface soil samples. The results showed that 16 types of PAHs were detected in the soil and crops. T...

These bug babies seek out poop to survive
The squash bug, a brown, thumbnail-size insect, may look innocuous, but it can lay waste to verdant young pumpkin patches in a matter of weeks. Yet it can’t do this damage without a tiny bacterial helper—one that scientists have finally figured out how it gets. In a study published today in Current Biology , researchers have found that, in its first week of life, the squash bug ( Anasa tristis ) seeks out the poop of adult members of its species , which is loaded with the critical bacterium it needs to digest food. It’s a “simple” but “powerfu...

Viruses, Vol. 15, Pages 1396: Virome Profiling, New Virus Identification and the Prevalence and Distribution of Viruses Infecting Chieh-Qua (Benincasa hispida Cogn. var. chieh-qua How) in China
Haibo Long The cucurbit vegetable chieh-qua (Benincasa hispida var. chieh-qua How) is an important crop in South China and southeast Asian countries. Viral diseases cause substantial loss of chieh-qua yield. To identify the viruses that affect chieh-qua in China, ribosomal RNA-depleted total RNA sequencing was performed using chieh-qua leaf samples with typical viral symptoms. The virome of chieh-qua comprises four known viruses (melon yellow spot virus (MYSV), cucurbit chlorotic yellows virus (CCYV), papaya ringspot virus (PRSV) and watermelon silver mottle virus (WSMoV) and two novel viruses: cucurbit chlorotic viru...

Characterization of rice straw lignin phenolics and evaluation of their role in pollen tube growth in < em > Cucurbita pepo < /em > L
Nat Prod Res. 2023 Jun 16:1-6. doi: 10.1080/14786419.2023.2225126. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTRice straw lignin was extracted via alkaline hydrolysis and structurally characterized using FT-IR and 1H NMR spectra. Ethyl acetate extract of acid solubilized lignin was found to contain p-coumaric acid, ferulic acid and caffeic acid as major phenolic acids which were isolated and characterized using spectral data. Amides of isolated phenolic acids were synthesized by their reaction with propyl and butyl amines using microwave irradiation and analysed using spectral studies. Phenolic acids and amides were evaluated for their ...
