Viromic approach reveals differences in the composition, diversity and relative abundance of pumpkin viruses across main growing regions of China
Virology. 2023 May 30;585:61-71. doi: 10.1016/j.virol.2023.05.005. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChina is the leading country for pumpkin production in the world. As other cucurbits, diseases caused by viruses are among the serious threats to pumpkin production, but our knowledge on the virus species infecting pumpkin plants is fragmentary. To understand the occurrence of viral diseases on pumpkin, we determined the geographical distribution characteristics, relative abundance and evolutionary relationship of pumpkin infected viruses by meta-transcriptome sequencing (RNA-seq) and viromic analysis of 159 samples exhibited t...

Gastrointestinal bezoars. Review of the literature and report of a rare case of pumpkin seed rectal impaction
Asian J Surg. 2023 May 22:S1015-9584(23)00674-7. doi: 10.1016/j.asjsur.2023.05.030. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTIn science, bezoar is a mass of hair or undigested vegetable matter, found in a human or animal's intestines, similar to a hairball. Usually, it is found trapped in every part of the gastrointestinal system and must be distinguished by pseudobezoar which is an indigestive object voluntarily introduced into the digestive tract. The term Bezoar is from Arabic bāzahr, "bezoar" or ultimately from Middle Persian p'tzhl pādzahr, "antidote, bezoar"ægagropile o egagropile It should be a universal antidote that works...

Development and characterization of defatted pumpkin seed meal and halloysite nanoclay composite films for food packaging
In this study, defatted pumpkin seed meal (DPSM) has been converted into films by impregnating selected concentrations of halloysite (HS) nanoclay (1%, 2% and 3% w/w). Various analytical techniques, including scanning electron microscopy (SEM), X-ray diffraction (XRD), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) and barrier property measurements, were employed to characterize the developed films. The appearance of the roughness on the surface of the films was evident from SEM micrographs upon the addition of HS. No change in the crystallinity of DPSM occurred when HS was incorporated; however, theTg showed a variation with the...

Sensitivity to imidacloprid insecticide varies among some social and solitary bee species of agricultural value
by Blair Sampson, Ale š Gregorc, Mohamed Alburaki, Christopher Werle, Shahid Karim, John Adamczyk, Patricia Knight Pollinator health risks from long-lasting neonicotinoid insecticides like imidacloprid has primarily focused on commercially managed, cavity-nesting bees in the generaApis,Bombus, andOsmia. We expand these assessments to include 12 species of native and non-native crop pollinators of differing levels of body size, sociality, and floral specialization. Bees were collected throughout 2016 and 2017 from flowering blueberry, squash, pumpkin, sunflower and okra in south Mississippi, USA. Within 30 –60 minutes o...

Health risks of dietary ethirimol exposure demand attention in China: A study of nationwide applications
Chemosphere. 2023 Apr 29:138810. doi: 10.1016/j.chemosphere.2023.138810. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe health risks for dietary exposure after large-scale ethirimol application demand attention to protect the human population from hazardous effects. The occurrence, dissipation and terminal magnitude of ethirimol were revealed by original deposition of <0.005-28.1 mg kg-1, half-lives of 0.6-14.5 d, and terminal concentrations of <LOQ-20.7 mg kg-1. The dietary risks and noncarcinogenic effects of ethirimol were 4.694-166.973% and 3.286-116.881% using a probabilistic estimation. The age of the population was negativ...
