Canine Mucosal Artificial Colon: development of a new colonic in vitro model adapted to dog sizes
Appl Microbiol Biotechnol. 2024 Jan 23;108(1):166. doi: 10.1007/s00253-023-12987-2.ABSTRACTDifferences in dog breed sizes are an important determinant of variations in digestive physiology, mainly related to the large intestine. In vitro gut models are increasingly used as alternatives to animal experiments for technical, cost, societal, and regulatory reasons. Up to now, only one in vitro model of the canine colon incorporates the dynamics of different canine gut regions, yet no adaptations exist to reproduce size-related digestive parameters. To address this limitation, we developed a new model of the canine colon, the C...

Adopting video assignments as a tool to improve first-year pharmacy students class engagement
CONCLUSIONS: The video assignment tool was successfully used to provide immediate feedback to a large class in a pharmaceutical calculations course. The students were in favor of the video assignment compared to traditional paper assignments. This finding could encourage other instructors to assess the benefit of implementing such tools in other pharmacy courses.PMID:38244677 | DOI:10.1016/j.pharma.2024.01.003 (Source: Annales Pharmaceutiques Francaises)

A Future European Scientific Dialogue Regulatory Framework: Connecting the Dots
This article provides an overview of these challenges and reflects on the ways in which the already available SA options could be consolidated and optimized for building an integrated, easy-to-navigate process. The key elements of the proposal are improved orientation and navigation support, a simplified process of managing parallel interactions with multiple bodies, competitive SA timelines, consistency and harmonization across stakeholders, a strengthened horizon scanning to increase network preparedness, and a mechanism for building an institutional memory. The article builds on ongoing dialogues driven by the European ...

Antibacterial agents and the fight against antibiotic resistance: A real-world evidence analysis of consumption and spending by an Italian healthcare company
CONCLUSION: This real-world evidence analysis aimed to support the justified and comprehensible global concerns regarding bacterial resistance. The extensive consumption of antibiotics will inevitably lead to the development of increasingly drug-resistant bacteria for which no antibiotic may be efficacious. National programs addressing antibiotic resistance and the awareness of all healthcare personnel must be accorded the utmost priority to enhance consumption data and, consequently, safeguard future human survival.PMID:38218426 | DOI:10.1016/j.pharma.2024.01.001 (Source: Annales Pharmaceutiques Francaises)

Chronic kidney disease in America, Africa, and Asia: Overview of treatment cost and options
Ann Pharm Fr. 2024 Jan 11:S0003-4509(24)00002-6. doi: 10.1016/j.pharma.2024.01.002. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTChronic kidney disease (CKD) is one of the non-infectious diseases that threaten patients' lives on a daily basis. Its prevalence is high, but under-reported by patients and those living with the disease, as it is silent and asymptomatic in the early stages. Kidney disease increases the risk of heart and vascular disease. These problems can manifest themselves slowly, over a long period of time. Early detection and treatment can often prevent chronic kidney disease from worsening. As kidney disease progresses, ...

Molecules, Vol. 29, Pages 322: Hydroxylated Tetramethoxyflavone Affects Intestinal Cell Permeability and Inhibits Cytochrome P450 Enzymes
This study aims to provide insights into the chemical and biological properties of hydroxylated TMF and evaluates its effects on intestinal cell permeability and cytochrome P450 (CYP) inhibition. Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LC-MS) and microsomes analyze the TMFs and hydroxylated TMFs, elucidating cell penetration and metabolic inhibition potential. 3H7-TMF shows the fastest (1-h) transport efficiency in intestinal cells. The Caco-2 cell model exhibits significant transport and absorption efficiency. Dissolved hydroxyl-TMF with hydrophilicity possibly permeates the gut. 3H7-TMF has higher transpor...
