Engineering in Pharmaceutical Manufacturing to Medical School
Not sure if this is the right place to put this but… When applying to college, I knew out of high school I wanted to be premed. However, I ended up picking the OOS, more expensive school which meant loans and because I would be exiting undergrad with debt, my family encouraged me not to enter medicine but instead do engineering. The summer before my senior year of college, I took an internship with a big pharma company doing engineering on a manufacturing line. I liked the internship as I... Drug talks
As a fellow, I attended many pharma sponsored drug dinners. A lot of the speakers were academic faculty in the disease-specific field of the drug. However, there were several community oncologists, especially private practice oncologists, who gave these talks. I'm assuming they get paid at least a couple thousand per talk, as several of them were driven from several states away to our area to give the talks. How do I get involved in this as a private practice doc just starting out? Would... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Transitioning to the next career
Does anyone have a good resources or possibly personal experiences on how they transitioned out of clinical medicine to jobs related to their medical degree? As in pharma, research, litigation, physician for a corporation (I know this one is still clinical) or something of the sort? I am about 5 years ago, get paid well, have good hours, however its just not cutting it anymore with the recurrent night shifts, patients that have become increasingly impatient, consultants clamoring for more... Cut RO payments every year? SURE! Cut drug payments? HOLD ON PARTNER!!!
I'm surprised that this hasn't been discussed yet. Merck sues US govt to prevent price negotiation The money quote: "Merck & Co (MRK.N) sued the U.S. government on Tuesday, seeking to halt the Medicare drug price negotiation program contained in the Inflation Reduction Act (IRA), which it argues violates the Fifth and First Amendments to the U.S. Constitution." Just like the Founding Fathers intended - pharma companies who manufacture PD-L1 inhibitors should be able to charge... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Chances of getting into top programs?
Hi everyone! I am a current healthcare/pharma communications professional who is looking to change careers into medicine and I was wondering if you think I have a good chance of getting into a top post-bac pre-med program (e.g., Bryn Mawr, Scripps, Goucher). First, a little bit about me: My whole life I dreamed of being a doctor and have always been good at (and interested in) biology, anatomy, physiology, and neuroscience. I applied to Emory University as a pre-med student, but ultimately... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Inflation reduction act and oncology reimbursement
IRA recently passed. Basically it will allow government to negotiate drug prices with pharma companies. Specifically, it'll be 20 chemo drugs by 2029 that gov will negotiate pricing on. They mentioned mostly oral chemo such as palbociclib and ibrutinib/etc. One article I read on ASCO projects almost 50% decline in drug prices. Can we discuss how this IRA will affect private practice onc or community hospital onc reimbursement? (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Things I hate to hear patients say:
"I try to use all-natural solutions if I can." "My Nurse Practitioner knows more because she considers the 'whole patient' ." "I like to do things holistically." [Bonus if I ask them what the word "holistic" means and they can't form an answer.] "I've done my research." "Vaccines are just a scheme for big pharma to make money." "I didn't know what to do, so I took my blood pressure, and..." Following the last one: "My blood pressure was high and I don't want to have a stroke; so... Read more (Source: Student Doctor Network)

Previous Matriculation for 2 weeks
Hey all, so long story short - I applied to Australian MD schools last year and was accepted. I didn't want to go and wanted to apply DO instead. However, my parents basically forced me into it (whole other story) and I told them that I would go check out the school and if I didn't like it, I would not attend. Anyways, so I went to the school for 2 weeks after the program commenced and my suspicions were correct (low quality education, poor curriculum etc), I decided to leave because I could... Career pivot: pharmacy to pharma to tech
Hi all Just want to share my recent experience as a data point to encourage people who want to explore this path. It is possible after all. Yesterday I was approached on LinkedIn by a Meta recruiter, scouting candidates for senior machine learning engineer roles from multiple teams supporting Facebook and Instagram, and she thought I was a good fit and offered to initiate the interview process...unfortunately I just started my current role in pharma under 6 months and still a few month...
