Insights into the management of penile squamous cell carcinoma: from conventional approaches to emerging novel therapies
Expert Opin Pharmacother. 2024 Apr 2:1-19. doi: 10.1080/14656566.2024.2337244. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTINTRODUCTION: Penile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC), a rare genitourinary cancer, is associated with poor outcomes due to limited treatment effectiveness, especially in advanced stages.AREAS COVERED: While chemotherapy and/or surgery remain the standard of care, emerging therapies like immunotherapy, targeted therapy, and human papillomavirus (HPV) directed therapies show promise. Key to advancing treatment is understanding the immune microenvironment to gain insights into tumor resistance mechanisms and potential t...

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1309: Improving Quality of Life and Psychosocial Health for Penile Cancer Survivors: A Narrative Review
Chipollini Treatment of penile cancer (PC) focuses on organ preservation, employing various surgical and non-surgical approaches. These interventions may lead to disfigurement, impacting patients’ functional outcomes and psychosocial well-being. We reviewed studies related to penile health and PC up to February 2024, limited to studies published in English. Studies employing health-related quality of life (HRQoL) assessments have identified a detrimental association between aggressive treatment and overall health status, physical functioning, and relationships. In contrast, organ-sparing demonstrates impr...

Testosterone recovery after androgen deprivation therapy in localised prostate cancer: Long-term data from two randomised trials
Androgen deprivation therapy (ADT) is an effective, commonly used treatment in localised prostate cancer [1]. In the National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines Version 1.2024 [2], the recommendation of ADT plus radiotherapy (RT) for unfavorable intermediate risk prostate cancer (IRPC) is listed as category 2a evidence and as category 1 evidence for high-risk prostate cancer (HRPC). However, ADT is also associated with a long list of hypogonadal side effects that significantly affect patients ’ quality of life [3], including hot flashes [4], fatigue [5], anemia [6], decrease muscle strength, increase body fat [7,8]d...

Compliance With NCCN Guidelines for Evaluation and Treatment of Anemia Among Patients With Solid Tumors
CONCLUSIONS: Anemia is common in patients with solid tumors; yet, compliance with NCCN Guidelines for evaluation and treatment of anemia remains low. There are opportunities to improve compliance with guidelines across the spectrum of cancer care.PMID:38489926 | DOI:10.6004/jnccn.2023.7108 (Source: Journal of the National Comprehensive Cancer Network : JNCCN)

Cancers, Vol. 16, Pages 1066: Transcriptomic, Proteomic, and Genomic Mutational Fraction Differences Based on HPV Status Observed in Patient-Derived Xenograft Models of Penile Squamous Cell Carcinoma
z-Ferrer Curtis A. Pettaway Metastatic penile squamous cell carcinoma (PSCC) has only a 50% response rate to first-line combination chemotherapies and there are currently no targeted-therapy approaches. Therefore, we have an urgent need in advanced-PSCC treatment to find novel therapies. Approximately half of all PSCC cases are positive for high-risk human papillomavirus (HR-HPV). Our objective was to generate HPV-positive (HPV+) and HPV-negative (HPV−) patient-derived xenograft (PDX) models and to determine the biological differences between HPV+ and HPV− disease. We generated four HPV+ a...

Acute urinary retention due to corpus cavernosum penile metastasis from lung adenocarcinoma after targeted therapy: a case report and review of the literature
ConclusionThe penis may be a site of metastasis from primary lung cancer, especially for old patient. Metastasis to the penis usually indicates that the primary lung cancer is at an advanced stage and the prognosis is very poor. More research is necessary to understand the underlying mechanism of adenocarcinoma of lung metastasis. (Source: Frontiers in Oncology)

Long-term outcomes of penile squamous cell carcinoma in men age 50 years old compared with men > 50 years old from a single tertiary referral centre: a propensity score matched analysis
Int J Impot Res. 2024 Feb 29. doi: 10.1038/s41443-024-00842-5. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTPenile cancer (PeCa) is rare, and the oncological outcomes in younger men are unclear. We aimed to analyse and compare oncological outcomes of men age ≤50 years (y) and >50 years with PeCa. A retrospective analysis of men ≤50 y with penile squamous cell carcinoma managed at a tertiary centre was performed. A propensity score matched cohort of men >50 y was identified for comparison. Matching was according to tumour, nodal stage and the types of primary surgery. Overall survival (OS), disease-specific survival (DSS), recur...

Robotic or open superficial inguinal lymph node dissection as staging procedures for clinically node negative high risk penile cancer
CONCLUSIONS: We observed similar complication rates and surgical variable outcomes in our analysis apart from operative time and operative drain duration. Oncological outcomes were similar between the two cohorts. RAIL was a reliable staging and potentially therapeutic procedure among clinically node negative patients with penile squamous cell carcinoma with comparable outcomes to an OSILND cohort.PMID:38388244 | DOI:10.1016/j.urolonc.2024.01.036 (Source: Urologic Oncology)
