Associations between Hysterectomy and Metabolic Syndrome: The Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis
CONCLUSION: Hysterectomy, even with ovarian preservation, may be independently associated with a higher risk of metabolic syndrome. If other studies confirm these findings, screening and preventive strategies focused on females with ovary-sparing hysterectomy and the mechanisms underpinning these associations may be explored.PMID:38703940 | DOI:10.1016/j.ajog.2024.04.035 (Source: Atherosclerosis)

Angelica sinensis polysaccharide combined with cisplatin reverses cisplatin resistance of ovarian cancer by inducing ferroptosis via regulating GPX4
Biomed Pharmacother. 2024 May 3;175:116680. doi: 10.1016/j.biopha.2024.116680. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTCisplatin (DDP) resistance poses a significant challenge in the treatment of ovarian cancer. Studies have shown that the combination of certain polysaccharides derived from plants with DDP is an effective approach to overcoming drug resistance in some cancers. Angelica sinensis (Oliv.) Diels has been used for centuries in China to treat gynecological ailments. Numerous studies indicate that Angelica sinensis polysaccharide (ASP), an extract from Angelica sinensis, can inhibit various forms of cancer. However, the im...

A novel protein CYTB-187AA encoded by the mitochondrial gene CYTB modulates mammalian early development
Cell Metab. 2024 Apr 29:S1550-4131(24)00132-3. doi: 10.1016/j.cmet.2024.04.012. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTThe mitochondrial genome transcribes 13 mRNAs coding for well-known proteins essential for oxidative phosphorylation. We demonstrate here that cytochrome b (CYTB), the only mitochondrial-DNA-encoded transcript among complex III, also encodes an unrecognized 187-amino-acid-long protein, CYTB-187AA, using the standard genetic code of cytosolic ribosomes rather than the mitochondrial genetic code. After validating the existence of this mtDNA-encoded protein arising from cytosolic translation (mPACT) using mass spectro...

Diversity and Functionality of Bacteria Associated with Different Tissues of Spider Heteropoda venatoria Revealed through Integration of High-Throughput Sequencing and Culturomics Approaches
This study aimed to investigate the community diversity and functional characteristics of spider-associated bacteria in four tissues of Heteropoda venatoria using HTS of the 16S rRNA gene and culturomics technologies, as well as the functional verification of the isolated strains. The results of HTS showed that the spider-associated bacteria in different tissues belonged to 34 phyla, 72 classes, 170 orders, 277 families, and 458 genera. Bacillus was found to be the most abundant bacteria in the venom gland, silk gland, and ovary, while Stenotrophomonas, Acinetobacter, and Sphingomonas were dominant in the gut microbiota. B...

Reproductive and endocrine-disrupting toxicity of Pyrogallol in catfish (Clarias gariepinus)
Environ Pollut. 2024 May 2:124104. doi: 10.1016/j.envpol.2024.124104. Online ahead of print.ABSTRACTEndocrine disruptors are synthetic or natural chemicals that can agonize/antagonize hormone receptors or can interfere with the production and secretion of hormones, leading to altered tissue histology and physiology. Pyrogallol is a contaminant widely distributed in aquatic environments that presents health risks to both humans and animals. However, the potential for endocrine disruption by pyrogallol, particularly in fish, are lacking. The purpose of this study was to shed light on how pyrogallol may affect hormone signall...

Perioperative management of a patient with unexpectedly detected early-stage ovarian mucinous carcinoma combined with progressive bulbar paralysis: a case report and literature review
Giant ovarian cysts (GOCs)complicated with progressive bulbar paralysis (PBP) are very rare, and no such literature about these cases have been reported. Through the diagnosis and treatment of this case, the p... (Source: BMC Women's Health)

Predictors of Blood Transfusion in Patients Undergoing Cytoreductive Surgeries for Ovarian Malignancy
CONCLUSIONS: Perioperative blood transfusion is common in patients undergoing cytoreductive surgery. In this study, EBL and preoperative hemoglobin levels were significantly associated with transfusion receipt. Clinicians should optimize hemoglobin levels and intraoperative blood conservation strategies to reduce the need for transfusion. The results also highlight the importance of considering racial and ethnic differences when developing strategies to reduce transfusion risk.PMID:38701848 | PMC:PMC11073803 | DOI:10.14423/SMJ.0000000000001685 (Source: Southern Medical Journal)

Pseudogestational Sac Delaying Diagnosis of Ectopic Pregnancy: A Case Report
We present a case of a 20-year-old woman who arrived to the Emergency Department (ED) with abdominal pain and ended up being transferred for an Obstetrics evaluation of a possible heterotopic pregnancy. Her radiology-performed ultrasound had revealed an "intrauterine gestational sac" along with an adnexal mass near the right ovary. The patient was not undergoing assisted-reproductive fertilization, nor did she have meaningful risk factors for heterotopic pregnancy. The patient was managed expectantly over the ensuing week to see whether the intrauterine fluid was a true gestational sac. After multiple repeat ED visits, the...
